Searching for a Specialist: Valero Texas Open

Article Image

Welcome back for another specialist search.

After Haas and Kokrak bowed out early last week, our other two specialists Luke Donald and Graham DeLaet both kept their names in the mix for the entire week. Close call.

For this week’s Valero Texas Open we are going to look at performance on Bermuda Greens, Long Courses, Hard-to-Hit Fairways, Hard-to-Hit Greens, Hard Courses, and Par 72 Courses.

Let’s go …

Bermuda Greens

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio features average speed bermudagrass greens.

Golfers that grew up playing on bermuda often see a performance uptick when the TOUR heads to a bermuda course. Let’s see who those folks are.

The Top 10 Bermuda Specialists are:

Matt Every (0.136 sg:bermuda vs. -0.481 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.727 sg:bermuda vs. 0.173 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.609 sg:bermuda vs. 1.089 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.66 sg:bermuda vs. 0.184 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.614 sg:bermuda vs. 1.169 sg:total)
John Peterson (0.727 sg:bermuda vs. 0.344 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.233 sg:bermuda vs. -0.138 sg:total)
Greg Owen (0.442 sg:bermuda vs. 0.086 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.234 sg:bermuda vs. -0.587 sg:total)
Bryce Molder (1.002 sg:bermuda vs. 0.689 sg:total)

A few Florida Gators, an LSU Tiger, a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket. These are no coincidences. Playing most of your formative rounds on bermuda often translates to success later on in your career.

The big wildcard here is Tony Finau. I always talk about how I auto-fade Finau on bermuda. However, his current form over the last few months shows a trend moving straight upward. I may be willing to make an exception this week and hope his ball-striking carries him to another top 25.

Long Courses

TPC San Antonio stretches out to 7,435 yards.

That is not the longest course on the schedule, but definitely no cakewalk.

More yardage on a course typically means less room for error, tee-to-green. If you hit a bad tee shot on a 600-yard par 5, good luck trying to salvage a par.

The 10 Long Course Specialists:

Kevin Tway (0.449 sg:long vs. -0.384 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.455 sg:long vs. -0.236 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.868 sg:long vs. 1.288 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.131 sg:long vs. 1.609 sg:total)
Chad Collins (0.724 sg:long vs. 0.215 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.515 sg:long vs. 0.018 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.241 sg:long vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.161 sg:long vs. 0.676 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.653 sg:long vs. 0.189 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.9 sg:long vs. 0.46 sg:total)

As you might be able to tell just from first glance, it’s not always the bombers that thrive on long courses. Golfers like Michael Kim and Sam Saunders are steady in their tee-to-green ways, which allows them to avoid the big numbers and still attack the long par 5s with wedges after laying up.

Two golfers on the wrong side of the equation here are Brett Stegmaier and Ken Duke. They both lose more than 1 stroke per round on long courses versus their baseline performance. Ouch.

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

With a long layout, you might expect the course designer to be generous with the landing zones on the fairways.

That’s just not the case here at the Oaks Course, as the fairways are tree-lined and force you to hit plenty of drivers.

The Top 10 Hard Fairway Specialists:

K.J. Choi (1.554 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.653 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.625 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.273 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.551 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.111 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.614 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.532 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.054 sg:total)
Seung-yul Noh (1.095 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.674 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.646 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.251 sg:total)
Branden Grace (1.786 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.394 sg:total)
Ben Crane (0.806 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.416 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.429 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.048 sg:total)

As we often see with tough-to-hit fairways, sometimes you can get away with being a bit wild off the tee since everyone will be missing a lot of fairways anyway.

However, arrow shooters like Choi, Crane, and Summerhays just beat the fairways to death, and slowly pick up strokes by eliminating any big mistakes off the tee.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

We just found out the fairways are tough to hit, but the field also averages just 57% of Greens in Regulation.

Sometimes when fairways are tight, the architect makes up for it by giving them generous green surfaces to land. That’s not the case here since the course typically plays pretty firm and golfers will be missing plenty of fairways, making it tougher to spin the ball on approach.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Cameron Percy (1.785 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.525 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.414 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.481 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.632 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.764 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.469 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.727 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.856 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.184 sg:total)
Soren Kjeldsen (1.768 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.129 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.901 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.288 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (0.926 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.342 sg:total)
Greg Owen (0.61 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.086 sg:total)
John Senden (1.526 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.014 sg:total)

One way to thrive on these type of tracks is to be a great scrambler since the majority of the field will be missing greens.

The other way to thrive is to be stellar off-the-tee, setting up better angles for your approach shots.

Some who really seems to struggle with these type of layouts is Anirban Lahiri. He is actually losing strokes to the field in 32 rounds played on tough-to-hit greens. Perhaps it puts too much stress on his balky putter.

Hard Courses

We just talked about how tough the fairways AND greens are here in San Antonio.

It makes sense that the course is just tough in a general sense. Some golfers don’t care why the course is tough, but their mental game is strong enough to grind out good finishes time after time on tough tracks.

Let’s see who those golfers are.

The 10 Hard Course Specialists:

Bryson DeChambeau (1.676 sg:hard vs. 0.764 sg:total)
John Huh (1.493 sg:hard vs. 0.646 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.761 sg:hard vs. 0.018 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.797 sg:hard vs. 1.054 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.906 sg:hard vs. 0.268 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.797 sg:hard vs. 0.189 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.475 sg:hard vs. -0.07 sg:total)
Freddie Jacobson (1.345 sg:hard vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.573 sg:hard vs. 1.11 sg:total)
John Senden (1.474 sg:hard vs. 1.014 sg:total)

We’ve seen Summerhays pop on quite a few tough tracks include four straight top 15s here at the Valero.

It’s early in his career but DeChambeau more than doubles his baseline output when heading to a tough course. Perhaps it’s all that brainpower and computations that allow him to plot his way around a tough layout.

Par 72 Courses

When par 72s roll around, it means plenty of par 5s on the docket.

That generally means a boost to bombers but not always. Let’s have a look.

The 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Andrew Loupe (0.568 sg:par72 vs. 0.018 sg:total)
Luke List (1.815 sg:par72 vs. 1.367 sg:total)
Ryo Ishikawa (0.743 sg:par72 vs. 0.361 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.103 sg:par72 vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.883 sg:par72 vs. 0.551 sg:total)
Chad Collins (0.533 sg:par72 vs. 0.215 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (0.849 sg:par72 vs. 0.539 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (0.748 sg:par72 vs. 0.45 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (0.967 sg:par72 vs. 0.676 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (0.929 sg:par72 vs. 0.641 sg:total)

As you’d expect, plenty of firepower on the list above.

Ollie Schniederjans shows up near the bottom of the list here, but I’m not going to panic there. I think this is a case of a small sample size early in his career. There is nothing that suggests his game wouldn’t perform on a par 72 layout.

Luke Donald on the other hand, it makes perfect sense he loses his edge when more par 5s get added. I wouldn’t bank on a repeat of last week at the Heritage, one of the shorter tracks on TOUR.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this search is to find some golfers with a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on golfers that need the week of their lives just to crack the top 25.

We don’t need to completely eliminate these guys, but definitely isolate them to GPP consideration only since their baseline strokes gained is lower than the field average this week.

GPP-Only Options:

Michael Thompson
Steve Wheatcroft
Matt Every

I have no real interest in any of these three, based on their current form. Perhaps M. Thompson, but I will avoid entirely I think.

The Specialists

Charley Hoffman
K.J. Choi
Jimmy Walker
Brendan Steele
Jamie Lovemark
Billy Horschel
Matt Kuchar

Our specialist this week is Charley Hoffman!

What a letdown! Just kidding, but much like Luke Donald last week, it turns out Hoffman’s course history isn’t just some magically thing; his stats actually fit the profile of the course.

Brendan Steele and Jimmy Walker are also past champs here, so it turns out there is a distinct profile that consistently translates here at TPC San Antonio.

Could one of the other four specialists pick up a win here by week’s end? K.J. Choi would be the least likely of the bunch to win, but a win from any of the other six would not be shocking by any means.

The Anti-Specialists

Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all six angles!

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano
Spencer Levin

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
