Searching for a Specialist: Valero Texas Open

Heading back to Texas this week, let’s search through the numbers to see who should fit the course at TPC San Antonio. Looking at last week, 2-of-3 specialists made it through the cut but didn’t provide many fireworks after that. An overall disappointing week after a great showing from Leishman at the Masters.

For the Valero let’s look at Performance on Hard Courses, Performance on Long Courses, Performance in Texas, Performance on Driver-Heavy Courses, and Performance in the Wind.

Here we go …

Performance on Hard Course

No matter how you slice it, TPC San Antonio is TOUGH. You could argue that it’s not so bad if the wind is calm. The problem is that the wind is rarely calm around here. Let’s see who likes the challenge of a tough track.

The 10 Hard Specialists:

Jonathan Randolph (0.881 sg:hard vs. -0.068 sg:total)
John Senden (1.518 sg:hard vs. 0.92 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.501 sg:hard vs. 0.908 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.426 sg:hard vs. 0.867 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.474 sg:hard vs. 1.001 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.265 sg:hard vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.3 sg:hard vs. 0.839 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.345 sg:hard vs. -0.109 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.025 sg:hard vs. 0.58 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.225 sg:hard vs. 0.824 sg:total)

There must be something about Australia and tough courses since Senden, Baddeley, Jones, and Chalmers all line up here. If we’re looking at pure volume then Matt Kuchar, Adam Scott, and Charley Hoffman have gained the most strokes on tough courses (since 2014).

Long Courses

This week’s course stretches out past 7,400 yards. There are three lengthy par 3s, four long par 4s, and a trio of long par 5s. Distance and long-iron play will be key here.

The Top 10 Long Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.791 sg:long vs. -0.068 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.97 sg:long vs. 1.344 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.006 sg:long vs. 1.455 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.322 sg:long vs. 0.867 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.458 sg:long vs. 0.017 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.7 sg:long vs. 1.284 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (0.933 sg:long vs. 0.542 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.109 sg:long vs. 0.73 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.302 sg:long vs. 0.965 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.228 sg:long vs. 0.918 sg:total)

We see a few repeats already with Jonathan Randolph and Aaron Baddeley showing up on both lists. That might be worth further consideration. On the flip side, Johnson Wagner, Jonathan Byrd, and Anirban Lahiri struggle to keep up on these lengthy layouts.

Texas Performance

The sample here is smaller, but I still included it because we are looking for someone that has experience taming these Texas conditions.

The Top 10 Texas Specialists:

Sung Kang (1.826 sg:Texas vs. 0.918 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.282 sg:Texas vs. -1.158 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.842 sg:Texas vs. 1.009 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.752 sg:Texas vs. 0.939 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.078 sg:Texas vs. 0.368 sg:total)
Zac Blair (1.198 sg:Texas vs. 0.591 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.3 sg:Texas vs. 0.733 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (1.098 sg:Texas vs. 0.538 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.064 sg:Texas vs. 0.542 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.283 sg:Texas vs. 0.764 sg:total)

The top four on this list all live in Texas. Having that knowledge of the conditions is a huge advantage this week. At the bottom we see Jason Kokrak and Martin Flores. The latter is surprising to see since he lives in Texas, but that hasn’t translated to much success.

Driver-Heavy Courses

TPC San Antonio is a course you can leave driver in the bag…if you’re scared. It’s not the recommended route, though, if you want to contend. With four par 4s over 450 yards and three par 5s over 600 yards, confidence with the driver is a big asset this week.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Andrew Putnam (1.026 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.267 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.617 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.918 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.327 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.723 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.275 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.782 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.335 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.446 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.017 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.013 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.619 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (1.774 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.409 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.893 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.538 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.047 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.391 sg:total)

Talk about BOMBS AWAY for the most part here. This angle has proven very valuable here at the VTO. If we look at percentage of go-low rounds on driver-heavy courses, we see a list of Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Charley Hoffman, Kevin Chappell, Adam Scott, Martin Laird, Pat Perez, and Jimmy Walker. Five of those names have won this event.

Some smaller sample names on that same list include Keith Mitchell, Julian Suri, Beau Hossler, Corey Conners, Joel Dahmen, and Lanto Griffin. Could they be next in line for the Valero throne? Or will their samples regress to the mean?

Performance in the Wind

This event is one of the windiest on an annual basis. It looks to be more of the same this year as the early forecast calls for winds in the 10-to-15 MPH range with gusts over 20 MPH for basically the entire week.

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

J.T. Poston (1.274 sg:wind vs. 0.73 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.03 sg:wind vs. 0.542 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.237 sg:wind vs. 0.763 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.754 sg:wind vs. 2.331 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.223 sg:wind vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.042 sg:wind vs. 1.638 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.717 sg:wind vs. 0.318 sg:total)
Pat Perez (2.047 sg:wind vs. 1.647 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.888 sg:wind vs. 0.501 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.123 sg:wind vs. 0.75 sg:total)

Looking at VOLUME, we see Matt Kuchar, Sergio Garcia, Charley Hoffman, Bill Haas, and Adam Scott as the top stroke gainers since 2014 in the wind. Haas may be the only surprise name in that bunch. Brendan Steele is an interesting case here. He’s near the bottom of performance versus baseline in the wind. However, he ranks 24th overall in terms of go-low round percentage in the wind. Basically, he either crushes or implodes when it comes to golfing in the wind. Might be better suited for single-round contests if that’s the case.

Baseline Performance

We now have a long list of six golfers that are positive in all five angles. However, we can filter out some of the golfers that we just can’t trust due to poor form or a poor baseline number. These golfers should all like the course conditions this week, but they should be reserved for GPPs only:

Matt Jones
Billy Hurley III
Sung Kang

The Specialists

Sean O’Hair
Jimmy Walker
Charley Hoffman

The specialist this week is Sean O’Hair!

sean-o-hair-550x330

The Texas native has only played here twice and he is 0-for-2. I won’t let a four-round sample ruin my fun. Returning after a two-year break from this event, perhaps he’s looking to build on his momentum over the last month, racking up a pair of top 15s before his recent T64 and MC. He’s not a plug-and-play option but O’Hair should fit the course better than his previous record here suggests.

Walker and Hoffman match up a lot better with their course history. Both have a long list of good finishes here in San Antonio. Walker even lives in the area.

Jimmy and Charley should both be popular this week but adding O’Hair into the mix might provide that low-owned spark that is sometimes needed to bring home a big GPP.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline. However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf. Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Charley Hoffman
Adam Scott
Jimmy Walker
Jamie Lovemark
Matt Kuchar
Ryan Moore
J.B. Holmes
Harris English
John Huh
Sean O’Hair
Stewart Cink
Martin Laird
Bill Haas
Pat Perez
Si Woo Kim
Kevin Chappell
Sergio Garcia
William McGirt
Aaron Wise
Shubhankar Sharma

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
