Searching for a Specialist: Valspar Championship

EDITOR’S NOTE: Click here to learn how you could win a trip to Augusta with the Tour Junkies and FantasyDraft!

Heading back to Florida for this week’s Valspar, we have plenty of course history to review, but let’s take a look at some course-fit angles to see who may be ready to rock at the Copperhead Course.

Last week we were looking rough out of the gate with our superstar specialists, but JT roared back over the weekend and DJ also picked up a top 10. Like usual in a no-cut event, their ability to take it low prevailed.

For the Valspar Championship, we will look at Performance on Overseeded Greens, Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, Performance in Florida, Performance on Tough-to-Hit Greens, and Performance in the Winter Months.

Here we go …

Performance on Overseeded Greens

The greens at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course are bermuda, but they are overseeded with poa trivialis to make sure the greens are alive and thriving until spring arrives.

While looking at regular bermuda stats won’t hurt you, honing in on the most similar green types will likely yield the best results.

Let’s see who has played well on overseeded greens in the past…

The 10 Overseeded Specialists:

John Huh (1.686 sg:overseeded vs. 0.919 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.904 sg:overseeded vs. 1.236 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (2.164 sg:overseeded vs. 1.601 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.985 sg:overseeded vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.546 sg:overseeded vs. 1.029 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (2.035 sg:overseeded vs. 1.547 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.587 sg:overseeded vs. 1.102 sg:total)
Bud Cauley (1.862 sg:overseeded vs. 1.397 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.942 sg:overseeded vs. 1.483 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.53 sg:overseeded vs. 1.106 sg:total)

Hadwin and O’Hair have both won here at Innisbrook while Dufner took care of business at an overseeded CareerBuilder Challenge and Kirk has taken home the hardware during the RSM Classic which has also been overseeded since moving to the November slot.

The top two overall in the overseeded strokes gained (cumulative) department are John Huh and CH3. Neither has won an event during the 2014-to-now time stretch, they are just that consistent.

Less-than-Driver Courses

We won’t see the same altitude as last week’s Chapultepec GC, but the two venues are the same in the fact they both allow you to club down off the tee.

Henrik Stenson said this a few years ago, “It’s a course where you position yourself off the tee quite a lot, you have to lay back unless you really want to try and thread a few of the tee shots out there. So, quite a few 2-irons and 4-woods, 3-woods off the tee.”

The Top 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists:

Ted Potter, Jr. (1.067 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.479 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.785 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.331 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.345 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.069 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.952 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.601 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.213 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.866 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.419 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.114 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (1.54 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.244 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.411 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.123 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.628 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.343 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (0.894 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.623 sg:total)

Aaron Wise is a surprising name here, but it’s still a small sample size. That being said, I like the big hitter this week since he should be able to use his length on the longer approach shots that Copperhead presents.

At the bottom, we see Kevin Tway who is more than half-a-shot worse (compared to his baseline) when it comes to playing on less-than-driver courses. Not someone I’d want to invest much stock into.

Florida Courses

When it comes to the Florida Swing, there are certainly differences among the courses.

However, there are a lot of similarities in these Florida events. Most notably are water hazards, loads of bunkers, course conditions given the time of year, and the climate.

The Top 10 Florida Specialists:

Greg Chalmers (1.244 sg:florida vs. 0.075 sg:total)
Adam Scott (3.133 sg:florida vs. 2.286 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (2.204 sg:florida vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.8 sg:florida vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (2.125 sg:florida vs. 1.415 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.26 sg:florida vs. 0.623 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.734 sg:florida vs. 1.123 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.564 sg:florida vs. 0.982 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.407 sg:florida vs. 1.905 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.149 sg:florida vs. 0.649 sg:total)

We see some pretty extreme splits when it comes to Florida performance. All 10 of the golfers above have a Florida Rating of +0.5 or greater which would suggest they outperform their baseline by more than two strokes, over the course of an event.

Of course there are other elements in play, but I would certainly expect a good chunk of these 10 golfers to pop their head up at some point this week.

It’s also important to use some common sense and deep diving before using these numbers as gospel. Take Jordan Spieth for example. Since 2014 he’s missed the cut in 3-of-10 starts in Florida. Diving deeper, we notice all three MCs have come at THE PLAYERS. Given the smaller sample size, Spieth’s Florida rating gets a big ding, but a WIN and two other top 20s in three Valspar starts certainly shows that this particular Florida course does suit him well.

Tough-to-Hit Greens

Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course is considered a second-shot course. That means golfers will lay back off the tee in order to attack from the right angles.

That plays out in the numbers, as well. Despite the fairway rates being around TOUR average, the number of greens hit are much lower than normal. In part that’s due to longer approaches. In part, it’s due to overhanging trees that can wreak havoc. It’s partially because the greens are on the small side.

In the end, that typically means scrambling is more important since (nearly) all golfers will be missing loads of greens.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Jamie Lovemark (1.995 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.44 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (2.242 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.7 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.557 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.004 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.469 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.356 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.902 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.687 sg:hard GIR vs. 2.233 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.909 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.455 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.479 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.228 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Kevin Na (2.146 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.729 sg:total)

Some golfers thrive on these type of courses because of a high ball flight or great long-iron play. Other thrive because of their elite short game.

On the negative, there are five golfers with a HARD GIR rating of -0.75 or worse. Those golfers are Martin Flores, Mac Hughes, Brice Garnett, Rory Sabbatini, and Si Woo Kim. That is quite the extreme split. Not something I would want to go against.

Performance in the Winter Months

When I look at winter performance, I’m not looking at performance in the snow or anything extreme like that.

Instead, this angle just looks at all PGA TOUR events played in the Winter Months and groups them together. Some golfers always fire out of the gate each year. That could be due to motivation, course conditions, or weather.

Whatever the case is, these golfers do show a nice improvement while playing Winter Golf.

The Top 10 Winter Specialists:

Adam Hadwin (2.07 sg:winter vs. 1.424 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.67 sg:winter vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.868 sg:winter vs. 0.331 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.373 sg:winter vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.844 sg:winter vs. 1.397 sg:total)
John Huh (1.357 sg:winter vs. 0.919 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.893 sg:winter vs. 1.455 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (1.922 sg:winter vs. 1.498 sg:total)
Harris English (1.687 sg:winter vs. 1.264 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (1.968 sg:winter vs. 1.547 sg:total)

As you may have noticed, there is some overlap here with the overseeded angle (Hadwin, Huh, CH3) since winter time is when overseeded conditions are most prevalent.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this article is to highlight course fit, but we don’t want to rely on a career week to have a golfer pay off his salary.

If a golfer falls outside the top 70 in baseline performance or they haven’t earned a top 30 in the last 16 weeks, then I bucket them in GPP-ONLY status.

This week, John Huh falls into this category.

The Specialists

Adam Hadwin
Jason Dufner
Bill Haas

The specialist this week is Adam Hadwin!

adam-hadwin-550x330

The Canadian is the defending champion this week, so we know he can get it done here at Innisbrook. Looking at his top finishes on TOUR, the top three finishes have come on courses with overseeded conditions (WIN at Valspar, RUNNER-UP at 2017 CareerBuilder, T3 at 2018 CareerBuilder).. He also boasts a T6 at the 2016 CBC. There is something about these overseeded greens that fit his game.

That same CareerBuilder connection pops up again with Jason Dufner, our second specialist. Dufner won the 2016 edition of the CBC. Here at the Valspar he is 9-for-10 with seven top 25s. I would expect more of the same from Big Duff Daddy. His 2018 hat game is also very special.

Lastly, we have Bill Haas. Again, another stellar track record in the California desert in overseeded conditions. Personally, I can’t back Haas this week due to the recent car accident. I can’t imagine trying to return to golf after seeing a good friend die while you walk away with minor injuries. The course fits this week, but the emotional state is something you need to consider before jumping on board.

Anti-Specialists

Robert Streb
Ernie Els
Keegan Bradley
Stewart Cink

If you are looking for some golfers to fade, these are four chances.

Cink’s Specialist Rating is very close to 0, despite being negative in all four angles. I wouldn’t put him in the auto fade territory. As for Keegan, this is where he infamously missed the cut after co-leading R1. I wouldn’t even consider him for cash, but his boom-bust potential does keep him in play for GPPs.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Adam Hadwin
Kevin Na
Luke List
Byeong Hun An
Charley Hoffman
Brandon Harkins
Jason Dufner
Sergio Garcia
Adam Scott
Charles Howell III
John Huh
Jamie Lovemark
Nick Watney
Lucas Glover
Patrick Reed
Chris Kirk
Ollie Schniederjans
Bill Haas
Louis Oosthuizen
Vaughn Taylor

A pretty surprising list here. None of the big names grade out well when it comes to a combination of long-term, short-term, and course fit.

I wouldn’t let that talk you off any of the stars, I would just consider giving some of these names a boost this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted, so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
