Searching for a Specialist: Waste Management Open

EDITOR’S NOTE: Click here to learn how you could win a trip to Augusta with the Tour Junkies and FantasyDraft!

We get a nice break from the multiple-course or pro-am events this week as we prepare for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Last week our group of specialists finished 5th, 12th, 29th, and MC. We also had J.B. Holmes bounce back into form and pop as a GPP-only pick. Pretty good, so let’s keep that momentum rolling as we head to the Arizona desert.

For the WMPO, we will look at Performance on Overseeded Greens, Driver-Heavy Courses, TPC Courses, and finish up with Performance over the Winter Months.

I also got a request for a weighted course history, so I’ve added that to the table at the bottom.

Here we go …

Performance on Overseeded Greens

TPC Scottsdale boasts bermuda greens that are overseeded with ryegrass each fall.

The cool overnight temperature during the winter don’t allow bermuda to thrive so the ryegrass fills in nicely while the bermuda is resting.

The 10 Overseeded Specialists:

Russell Henley (2.216 sg:overseeded vs. 0.436 sg:total)
John Huh (1.433 sg:overseeded vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.196 sg:overseeded vs. 1.355 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (2.165 sg:overseeded vs. 1.372 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.139 sg:overseeded vs. 1.264 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.402 sg:overseeded vs. 0.552 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.114 sg:overseeded vs. 0.308 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.569 sg:overseeded vs. 1.26 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.483 sg:overseeded vs. 1.679 sg:total)
Brian Stuard (1.044 sg:overseeded vs. 0.648 sg:total)

On the flip side, we have someone like Chez Reavie who has just two top 20s in his last 15 starts on overseeded greens. Perhaps he’s one to swerve, despite his great form and ASU connections.

Brandt Snedeker has also finished outside the top 20 in 11 of his last 12 on overseeded greens. Perhaps they are too true for his pop stroke. However, he brings loads of class, plenty of motivation, and a low price across the industry this week. Don’t overlook him entirely.

Driver-Heavy Courses

“You basically hit drivers out there and try to carry all the bunkers.” – Ben An

“With the greens being so firm, you’re kind of forced to hit driver at the tee.” – Danny Lee

“Around this golf course, my driver stays in play. My irons are pretty decent. So now it’s a driving golf course.” – Bubba Watson

There are loads of golfer quotes that express their love for being able to pound drivers here at TPC Scottsdale.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists are:

Sung Kang (1.682 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.064 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.058 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.888 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.369 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.579 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.077 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.459 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.99 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.107 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.678 sg:total)
Harris English (1.671 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.25 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.039 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.659 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (1.835 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.456 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (0.973 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.595 sg:total)

Francesco Molinari sits near the bottom here. He still doesn’t miss many cuts when heading to driver-heavy courses, but his upside gets chopped dramatically.

TPC Courses

The original TPC course was Sawgrass and most of them after have tried to replicate certain aspects.

In similar fashion to the CareerBuilder Challenge’s host course a few weeks ago, we have another Stadium Course on our hands.

TPC Courses often have general maintenance practices, as well.

The Top 10 TPC Specialists:

Hideki Matsuyama (3.107 sg:TPC vs. 2.309 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.959 sg:TPC vs. 1.286 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.824 sg:TPC vs. 1.18 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.922 sg:TPC vs. 1.294 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.667 sg:TPC vs. 1.064 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.248 sg:TPC vs. 1.647 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.035 sg:TPC vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.09 sg:TPC vs. 1.59 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.5 sg:TPC vs. 1.053 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.074 sg:TPC vs. 0.659 sg:total)

Billy Horschel calls TPC Sawgrass home, so it would make sense that he enjoys heading to other courses in the TPC Network. He’s picked up seven top 10s on TPC over his last 22 starts.

From a weighted performance view, the golfers with the most total strokes gained on TPCs since 2014 are Keegan Bradley, Charley Hoffman, Daniel Berger, Hideki Matsuyama, Billy Horschel, Brendan Steele, Tony Finau, Zach Johnson, Chad Campbell, and Patrick Reed.

Winter Months

Some golfers love to fire out of the gate after the holiday break.

Some golfers love the type of grasses that are often played during the winter.

Some golfers love the climate we see this time of year.

The Top 10 Winter Specialists:

Jon Rahm (3.32 sg:winter vs. 2.369 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.621 sg:winter vs. 0.933 sg:total)
Harris English (1.921 sg:winter vs. 1.25 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.346 sg:winter vs. -0.304 sg:total)
Wesley Bryan (1.346 sg:winter vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.722 sg:winter vs. 1.125 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.208 sg:winter vs. 0.678 sg:total)
Brian Stuard (1.159 sg:winter vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.019 sg:winter vs. 1.571 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.649 sg:winter vs. 1.203 sg:total)

It’s no secret that golfers like Charles Howell III and Jimmy Walker thrive in the winter months, but neither are in the field (and Walker is dealing with a lot of external factors).

Instead, Jon Rahm is the man here. When he arrived in the States, he set up shop in Arizona and considers San Diego his “favorite city.” He’s also cited the weather for his love of these early-season events. I think his performance will level out over the years as his love for other parts of the country grows, but for now, we need to strike whenever and wherever we can when he pegs it on the western part of the country.

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

To do that, we will eliminate anyone that falls outside the top 70 in Weighted Performance or anyone that hasn’t picked up a top 30 over the last four months. Not too strict, but definitely helps avoid the golfers that should be reserved for GPPs only:

Martin Laird
Aaron Baddeley
Robert Garrigus
Michael Kim
Chesson Hadley
K.J. Choi
Greg Chalmers
Matt Every

The Specialists

Sung Kang
Daniel Berger
Webb Simpson
Billy Horschel
James Hahn
Kevin Streelman
William McGirt

The specialist this week is Sung Kang!

It’s important to note that Kang sits at 56th on the Weighted Performance List and 71st in Form, so we shouldn’t lock him in for a top 10, just yet. That would require a huge leap over his baseline performance. Still, this layout looks to favor his style of play, making him an appealing, low-owned option.

Berger, Simpson, Horschel, and McGirt all bring solid course history.

Streelman and Hahn bring the local knowledge of Scottsdale, but their tournament results haven’t been all that steady. Perhaps they will put it together this week on a course that sets up well.

Anti-Specialists

Harold Varner III
Andrew Loupe
Kevin Chappell
Retief Goosen
Russell Knox
Camilo Villegas

Chappell will get some attention this week because he’s underpriced compared to his raw skill. His appearance on this list suggests that he may be adequately priced, after all.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jon Rahm
Daniel Berger
Webb Simpson
Hideki Matsuyama
Zach Johnson
Harris English
Ryan Palmer
Austin Cook
Brandon Harkins
Brendan Steele
Adam Hadwin
Marc Leishman
James Hahn
Cameron Smith
Gary Woodland
Xander Schauffele
Billy Horschel
Russell Henley
Jordan Spieth
Ollie Schniederjans

Harkings keeps showing up here, so I am finally going to give him a shot. If he finally flops then feel free to blame me.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

WEIGHTED column is another column for baseline performance, but it’s time-weighted so more recent results count for more.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
