Searching for a Specialist: Wells Fargo Championship

A field of 156 golfers heads back to Quail Hollow Club this week. This is a venue that has been featured on the PGA TOUR since 2003. Plenty of course history but there have been a few tweaks over the years. Let’s dig through some stats to see who should like the current setup in Charlotte, North Carolina.

No specialist column for the team event but two weeks ago we had all three of our specialist make the cut with a pair of them finishing 2nd and 4th. A solid week, so let’s see if we can keep that momentum rolling despite a week off, in between.

For the Wells Fargo Championship let’s look at Performance on Hard-to-Hit Fairways, Performance on Long Courses, Performance in the Spring, Performance on Driver-Heavy Courses, and Performance on Overseeded Greens.

Here we go …

Performance on Hard-to-Hit Fairways

During the last seven editions of the Wells Fargo Championship the field has averaged just 49.53 percent of fairways hit.

That is extremely low. A part of that is the preferred positioning off the tee, with golfers preferring a slight miss in one direction instead of playing on the wrong side of the fairway. The other part is the fact that so many drivers are hit. When you let golfers grip it and rip it, they will naturally fit fewer fairways.

The 10 Hard Fairway Specialists:

Chesson Hadley (1.508 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.888 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.446 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.873 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.121 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.615 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.792 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.341 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.568 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.125 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.728 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.3 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.032 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.625 sg:total)
Rory McIlroy (3.225 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.832 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.327 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.947 sg:total)
Adam Scott (2.529 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.175 sg:total)

This list has piled up three wins at Quail Hollow since 2010 (Rory x2, Hahn).

The theme of this list is length off the tee and not much care for accuracy. If you’re looking to build a stat profile, that’s a place to start (Driving Distance HIGH, Driving Accuracy WHO CARES).

Long Courses

Quail Hollow Club has always been a lengthy layout but it’s gotten even longer recently.

A renovation ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship expanded the course and also switched it from a par 72 to where it currently sits as a par 71.

The Top 10 Long Specialists:

Andrew Putnam (1.315 sg:long vs. 0.485 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.735 sg:long vs. -0.055 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.608 sg:long vs. 0.994 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.563 sg:long vs. -0.002 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.43 sg:long vs. 0.932 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.895 sg:long vs. 1.448 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (0.922 sg:long vs. 0.491 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.451 sg:long vs. 1.027 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.709 sg:long vs. 1.312 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.194 sg:long vs. 0.797 sg:total)

With NINE par 4s playing at 449 yards or longer, this course is a BEAST!

You might expect this list to be populated with bombers but as we see above, there is actually a good variety of big hitters and plodders. The PGA TOUR never wants to eliminate one style of golf so you’ll often see the course set up to benefit different styles of play on different days.

One thing is for certain, sloppy ball-striking will not be accepted on a long layout like this one.

Performance in the Spring

It may seem silly at first glance, but different golfers have different schedules.

Some golfers lack the motivation to play in the Fall. Some golfers don’t like the cold and windy conditions that often come in the Winter. Some golfers don’t like rain and in-betweenness in grass types that are often seen in the Spring. Others don’t like the heat of the Summer.

Just a few weeks ago Kevin Chappell was talking about how he’s usually a slow starter so it was a big bonus for him to pick up some good finishes early in the season this year. His long-term numbers reflect that (Negative in the Fall and Winter, Positive in the Spring and Summer).

The Top 10 Spring Specialists:

Byeong Hun An (2.113 sg:spring vs. 1.472 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.468 sg:spring vs. 0.828 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.44 sg:spring vs. 0.84 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.955 sg:spring vs. 0.363 sg:total)
Andrew Putnam (1.07 sg:spring vs. 0.485 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.193 sg:spring vs. -0.365 sg:total)
Bud Cauley (1.927 sg:spring vs. 1.374 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.48 sg:spring vs. -0.055 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.584 sg:spring vs. 2.053 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.524 sg:spring vs. 1.017 sg:total)

This is an angle where I’d prefer to see a huge sample and not trust the smaller samples. If a golfer has just one or two seasons under their belt then I wouldn’t put as much weight on this number above. However, someone like Matt Every has played hundreds of events and has shown a preference for Springtime. Perhaps this is a classic Matt Every – First Round Leader type of week.

This has been a historically slow season for Justin Thomas who hasn’t picked up any of his eight career wins in the Spring. In fact, just 4 of his last 21 starts in the Spring have gone for top 10s. Right now I’d file this under “things to monitor” but if he goes another entire Spring without much success then it’s definitely something to put into serious consideration.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Like we talked about in the Long Course section, there are nine par 4s that play to 449 yards or longer.

If you don’t bring some confidence with the driver, it could be a long week.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Andrew Putnam (1.422 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.485 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.578 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.927 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.101 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.491 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.352 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.84 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.708 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.3 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.822 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.422 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.826 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.438 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.414 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.027 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.025 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.365 sg:total)
Beau Hossler (1.51 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.17 sg:total)

Andrew Putnam is showing up very highly on quite a few angles so far. He could truly be a great course fit but this is an odd case where it could also just be due to his low baseline. He’s posted some of the best finishes of his career recently and a few of those finishes came on similar courses.

Someone like Paul Casey doesn’t have any problems of potentially misleading stats. He’s been a long-time steady performer so when he pops in a particular angle like this one, you know it’s something to watch very closely.

Performance on Overseeded Greens

The greens at Quail Hollow Club have changed at least three times since 2014.

They’ve gone from bentgrass to MiniVerde Bermuda to Champion Bermuda where they currently sit. Given the time of the year this event is played, the greens have also been overseeded with Poa Trivialias to match sure they are up to TOUR standards.

You might look at performance at the CareerBuilder, Houston Open, the Valspar, the Valero, or WM Phoenix Open for similar putting surfaces.

The Top 10 Overseeded Specialists:

Andrew Putnam (1.391 sg:overseeded vs. 0.485 sg:total)
Martin Piller (1.092 sg:overseeded vs. 0.223 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.687 sg:overseeded vs. 1.027 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.747 sg:overseeded vs. 1.104 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.432 sg:overseeded vs. 1.815 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.431 sg:overseeded vs. 0.828 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.095 sg:overseeded vs. 1.505 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.653 sg:overseeded vs. 1.068 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.979 sg:overseeded vs. 1.415 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.557 sg:overseeded vs. 0.994 sg:total)

Near the bottom of the lsit we see Justin Thomas. Perhaps that goes hand-in-hand with why his performance in the Spring is so much lower than his baseline. It should be noted that these greens played as pure bermuda last summer when he won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

Thomas continues to improve upon his weaknesses, though, so this isn’t a case where I’m ready to fade JT, despite the stats lining up against him.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of six golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out some of the golfers that we just can’t trust due to poor form or a poor baseline number.

These golfers should all like the course conditions this week but they should be reserved for GPPs only:

Matt Every
Sung Kang
Tom Hoge
Ernie Els

The Specialists

Sean O’Hair
Chesson Hadley

The specialist this week is Sean O’Hair!

sean-o-hair-550x330

The Texan was a specialist two weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open and he nearly pulled through with a victory! We have another long, driver-heavy course with overseeded greens. O’Hair should set up nicely again this week.

Adding to the evidence, O’Hair won at this course back in 2009, long before the sample size of these stats begins.

The second specialist this week is Chesson Hadley. The Wind Sock is a Raleigh native and resident, so he should be rather comfy playing close to home. His recent visits have supported that with finishes of T20 and T11 over his last two starts at Quail Hollow.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Rory Mcilroy
Patrick Reed
Louis Oosthuizen
Ryan Moore
Daniel Berger
Tommy Fleetwood
Charles Howell III
Sean O’Hair
Trey Mullinax
Brooks Koepka
Adam Hadwin
Russell Henley
Adam Scott
Hideki Matsuyama
Bud Cauley
Byeong Hun An
Chesson Hadley
Gary Woodland
Rickie Fowler
Paul Casey

Daniel Berger might surprise some people at #5 but his form is actually rather sneaky good. Brooks Koepka would be a great fit for this course if he had any form to speak of. He provides plenty of risk as he plays his way back from a wrist injury.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
