Searching for a Specialist: Wells Fargo Championship

The PGA TOUR heads back to the Carolinas for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

The course is Quail Hollow Club which is a beast of a par 71 with tough scoring conditions, bermuda turf, and speedy greens.

If you are new to the specialist search, here is a quick primer. The goal of this article is to look at a few key angles for the upcoming event and compare each golfer’s performance in those angles against their long-term baseline. For a golfer to get bucketed as a specialist, they must improve over their baseline in all five angles. At the bottom, I also include a table with the full-field rankings in each angle.

This week we look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Hard Courses, Long Courses, Strong Fields, and Performance on Fast Greens.

Here we go…

Bermuda Greens

The grass at Quail Hollow has a bermuda base from wall-to-wall. The rough is heavily overseeded to avoid patchy spots and it also helps limit flyers.

On the greens they have Champion bermuda that gets overseeded with poa trivialis, but this is the time of the year when the bermuda starts to announce it’s dominance. Let’s see who likes it when that bermuda is beneath their feet.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.779 sg:bermuda vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.78 sg:bermuda vs. 1.198 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.49 sg:bermuda vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.577 sg:bermuda vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.37 sg:bermuda vs. 0.92 sg:total)
Luke List (1.995 sg:bermuda vs. 1.552 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.484 sg:bermuda vs. 2.067 sg:total)
Denny McCarthy (1.516 sg:bermuda vs. 1.099 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.9 sg:bermuda vs. 1.515 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.076 sg:bermuda vs. 0.711 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bermuda Greens since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy, Charles Howell III, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jason Day.

We see Phil Mickelson at the bottom of this list. Is that because he hates the bermudagrass or is it because a lot of his bermuda rounds have come on Florida courses that force you to club down off the tee and feature a lot of water hazards? I would lean more toward the latter which is why we can’t always take these split stats at 100% face value. We need to interpret them when we can.

Hard Courses

Quail Hollow is generally on the tough side with a field average of +0.54 RTP since 2010.

Last year was the first time playing the venue since the renovations made ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship. As a result of the course now plays as a par 71 and it averaged +1.13 RTP last year. Stroke wise it stayed in line, but relative to par, birdies are tougher to find now. That messes with the heads of some golfers.

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists:

John Senden (1.459 sg:hard vs. 0.615 sg:total)
Danny Willett (1.318 sg:hard vs. 0.579 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (1.134 sg:hard vs. 0.657 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.522 sg:hard vs. 1.087 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.601 sg:hard vs. 1.169 sg:total)
Bill Haas (1.776 sg:hard vs. 1.356 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.433 sg:hard vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Freddie Jacobson (0.95 sg:hard vs. 0.547 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.319 sg:hard vs. 0.917 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.181 sg:hard vs. 0.781 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on hard courses since 2014 are Paul Casey, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Jason Day, and Tony Finau.

On the wrong side of the spectrum, we have Brice Garnett. He’s missed the cut in 12 of his last 14 starts on tough courses. The other two in that frame were 31st and 75th place finishes. Save Garnett for birdie-fests.

Long Courses

Quail Hollow was already one of the longest courses on the circuit, but it’s now squarely cemented as one of the longest since it plays as a par 71.

These long courses put an emphasis on distance, long-iron play, and/or scrambling. If you’re not strong from tee-to-green then you better scramble your butt off on a consistent basis.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.246 sg:long vs. 0.538 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.302 sg:long vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.616 sg:long vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.424 sg:long vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.959 sg:long vs. 1.477 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.456 sg:long vs. 1.043 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.397 sg:long vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.537 sg:long vs. 1.198 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.909 sg:long vs. 0.579 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.084 sg:long vs. -0.208 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, and Jason Day.

A lot of the names at the bottom of this list makes sense (like Langley, Harman, Potter Jr), but others like Mickelson, Garcia, and Byeong Hun are surprising. Of course, their baseline numbers still make them appealing, long course or not.

Strong Field Events

This year’s Wells Fargo sees a bit of a dip in field strength, but there are still some big-time names at the top.

Not backing down in the face of superstars is a big part of performing on the big stage, so let’s see who likes the bright lights.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Michael Thompson (1.591 sg:strong vs. 0.896 sg:total)
John Senden (1.203 sg:strong vs. 0.615 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.207 sg:strong vs. 0.755 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.017 sg:strong vs. 0.58 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.414 sg:strong vs. 0.986 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.329 sg:strong vs. 0.923 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (0.919 sg:strong vs. 0.55 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.27 sg:strong vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.27 sg:strong vs. 0.917 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.883 sg:strong vs. 0.538 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against Strong Fields since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, and Jason Day.

Outside the top 10 there are a few others that improve by more than a stroke per four rounds. That includes Tony Finau and Chesson Hadley who both caught my eye this week.

Performance on Fast Greens

The stimp meter has averaged 12.1 over the last eight editions of this event held at Quail Hollow. Anything over 12 feet I bucket into fast greens so these easily qualify.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Kyle Stanley (1.937 sg:fast greens vs. 1.261 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.568 sg:fast greens vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (1.511 sg:fast greens vs. 0.896 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.508 sg:fast greens vs. 0.986 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (1.034 sg:fast greens vs. 0.538 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.071 sg:fast greens vs. 0.58 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.229 sg:fast greens vs. 0.755 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.391 sg:fast greens vs. 0.92 sg:total)
Luke List (1.967 sg:fast greens vs. 1.552 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (1.924 sg:fast greens vs. 1.537 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Fast Greens since 2014 are Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, and Jason Day.

Some look for elite putters when they hear fast greens, but more often than not, fast green performance is fueled by elite ball-striking. It’s better to land your approach in the right areas to help eliminate three putts. Rather than relying on good putting prowess.

Baseline Performance

We now have five golfers that are positive in all five angles. Now we get to cut the fat for anyone that doesn’t fall inside the top 70 in form or baseline performance over the last year.

Jim Herman: 138th in FORM
Billy Hurley III: 92nd in FORM
Nick Watney: 86th in FORM
Jonas Blixt: 96th in One-Year Baseline

These four all fit the course, but none are appealing due to their form or baseline skill over the last year.

The Specialist

Kyle Stanley

Stanley is the specialist this week.

He’s positive in all five angles with the most notable being his fast-green performance. He improves 0.676 strokes over his baseline when playing on fast greens.

Fast greens even helped facilitate his recent slumpbuster when he posted a top 25 at the Masters. If it weren’t for that finish then Stanley would not pass the sniff test as far as recent form.

The Clemson product is 4-for-6 at this event with a pair of top 15s to his name.

If you’re looking at recent strokes-gained numbers then you’ll still want to avoid Stanley this week, but if you want to get in on the ground floor, he might be ready to snap out of his early-season slump and Quail Hollow looks like a great course to do that on.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jason Kokrak
Tony Finau
Lucas Glover
Denny McCarthy
Sungjae Im
Joel Dahmen
Rickie Fowler
Webb Simpson
Zach Johnson
Rory Sabbatini
Aaron Wise
Dylan Frittelli
Michael Thompson
Kyle Stanley
Jason Day
Paul Casey
Matt Jones
Rory Mcilroy
Henrik Stenson
Sam Burns

Quite an odd list this week. A big part of that has to do with scheduling and the time frame I use for FORM. Currently, it is set for a 6-week time frame. However, there are very few stroke-play events during that time right now since we had the Match Play and the Zurich Classic. Golfers are actually getting a boost for playing the Corales since it’s one more week of stroke-play results rather than nothing for Match Play.

If I double the window to Last 12 weeks then the top Form golfers are Kokrak, Rory (Mc), Fowler, Sungjae, and Hideki. That looks like a much better representation of lead-up form. Of course, most weeks this isn’t an issue at all, but I will keep it in mind in terms of tweaking what data I continue to use for Current Form.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
