Searching for a Specialist: Wyndham Championship

The PGA TOUR heads to Greenboro, North Carolina, for the final event of the regular season. Looking at historical stats since 2014, let’s search for a specialist who should be a good course fit at Sedgefield Country Club. Grading out results from last week, Phil Mickelson was a giant flop as the specialist. There is no sugarcoating that one. You could not convince me that Lefty is a bad course fit at Quail Hollow, but sometimes bad weeks happen. Louis Oosthuizen popped as a GPP-only specialist (runner-up finish) but that was still a disappointing week since Mickelson found more than 40% of my lineups last week.

Looking at this week’s course, we are going to look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Easy-to-Hit Greens, Weak Field Events, Performance in Hot Weather, and finish up with Easy Courses.

Here we go …

Bermuda Greens

Sedgefield CC has had champion bermuda greens since 2012. Having familiarity with grainy greens (often found in the South and Asia) is a big advantage.

The Top 10 Bermuda Specialists are:

Grayson Murray recently won on bermudagrass and calls Raleigh home. It makes sense he would thrive on the grainy stuff. Still a small sample, though. Whenever we have bentgrass greens I make sure to highlight the Lucas Glover fade. With BERMUDA this week, that means Glover is back in play.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

The field has averaged over 70 percent of greens hit since 2010. When greens are easy to hit this week, a few play styles usually pop. First are the elite ball-strikers. If the field can hit a high clip of greens then elite ball-strikers can go around and hit 15+ greens. Second are the elite putters. If greens are easy to hit, that means more chances to knock in long putts.

The 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Who has the upside on easy-to-hit greens? Kevin Na actually has the most top-5 worthy finishes since 2014 on Easy GIR courses (6). Other goflers with at least four top-5 worthy finishes on Easy GIR courses include: Russell Knox, Jason Bohn, Kevin Kisner, Bill Haas, and Keegan Bradley.

Weak Field Events

Sandwiched between the final major and the start of the Playoffs, this event doesn’t attract a heavy-hitting field. Some golfers like to peak for the majors while others feast on fields like this one. Let’s see who likes to play in these type of events.

Looking at performance against weak fields (since 2014), there are three golfers with nine top-20 worthy finishes: Webb Simpson, Scott Brown, and Chad Campbell.

Easy Courses

We talked about the greens being easy to hit, but some golfers don’t care why a course is easy, they just want it easy. Golfers with success on the Web.com Tour generally grade out well in this angle. You are forced to knock in a lot of birdies on a weekly basis down there.

The Top 10 Easy Course Specialists:

Ryan Blaum is an interesting name here. Adding to his appeal, he also played his college golf just down the road at Duke.

Performance in Hot Weather

The forecast calls for upper 80s throughout the week, with plenty of humidity to boot. Just like the bermuda angle, golfers that grew up playing in the South will gain an edge in these conditions.

The Top 10 Hot Weather Specialists:

If we look at the percentage of rounds where a golfer gains 2 or more strokes over the field (in hot weather, above 85 degrees) then six of the top 15 live in North Carolina. Once again, I can’t overemphasize the importance of familiarity in this region.

Baseline Performance

We’ve highlighted our top 10 for each angle and after the dust settles we have 12 golfers that remained positive in ALL FIVE angles. We don’t want to rely on a career week to contend, though, so the following golfers can get bucketed into good course fit but GPP-ONLY:

Nothing really interesting here, but worth a deeper look if you need a super deep sleeper.

Our specialist this week is Webb Simpson!

Recently, we’ve seen the field narrow down to just one or two specialists but this week there are EIGHT that pop. The theme throughout this article has been comfort in the area. It’s no surprise then that FOUR of the specialists reside in the Carolinas (Webb, Haas, Martin, Brown). Simpson made this course the site of his first PGA TOUR win back in 2011 and has since named his daughter after the event. There is no doubt that this is a great course fit and also an event he treats very seriously.

All eight of these golfers should be given a long look this week. Whee Kim, Cameron Percy, and Michael Kim would be considered the least “safe” due to their baseline performance and form, but they also present the most salary savings.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Andrew Loupe
Chez Reavie

Nothing crazy here, although Chez Reavie presents an interesting decision. He is an anti-specialist, but none of his angles are EXTREME in the negative. He also has some of the best form in the field. Weighing all these options, I don’t think he’s a must-fade but he is an interesting fade option if you’re looking to fade high ownership.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro).
