Searching for a Specialist: Wyndham Championship

The season-ending event is upon us, so let’s go out with a bang this week as we look for a specialist and then turn our attention to the FedExCup Playoffs.

If you’re new to this article then here is how it goes. We look at past performance on courses or events played under similar conditions. We then compare that to a golfer’s baseline performance to see who underperforms or overperforms under those course conditions.

Reviewing last week, our specialist was Brooks Koepka and he turned out pretty well. The rest of the specialists were hit-or-miss; Xander and Finau were okay, but Stanley missed the cut on the number while Casey and Hoffman both struggled. Hard to call it a bad week with Koepka winning, but we definitely want to see more consistent results from ALL the specialists.

This week we look at performance on Bermuda Greens, Short Courses, Weak Field Events, Par 70 Courses, and Easy-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Bermuda Greens

After a summer full of mostly bentgrass greens, we head to Sedgefield Country Club, which has bermuda across the whole property, including the greens.

This means that recent form can be tossed aside if you really love a golfer that historically thrives on bermuda.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.625 sg:bermuda vs. 0.852 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.737 sg:bermuda vs. 1.084 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.809 sg:bermuda vs. 1.201 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.198 sg:bermuda vs. 0.671 sg:total)
Wesley Bryan (1.122 sg:bermuda vs. 0.629 sg:total)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (2.356 sg:bermuda vs. 1.875 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.498 sg:bermuda vs. 0.023 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.206 sg:bermuda vs. 0.749 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.38 sg:bermuda vs. 1.925 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.282 sg:bermuda vs. 0.84 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bermuda since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Billy Horschel, Jason Dufner, Hideki Matsuyama, and Daniel Berger.

Si Woo Kim is a past champ here and he also won at TPC Sawgrass. If you go down the list you’ll see that nine of his top 11 finishes on TOUR have come on bermuda or paspalum (grainy greens). He’s definitely comfy on these grass types.

Short Courses

Sedgefield Country Club is a par 70 that plays just over 7,100 yards.

Most of the course is average in length, but the par 5s are both under 550 yards. That sways it in the direction of being a short course.

Looking at the 10 years or history here, this has been the best predictor of success here at Sedgefield. It might not be #1 this week, but I certainly wouldn’t ignore it.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists

Patrick Rodgers (1.58 sg:short vs. 0.837 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.756 sg:short vs. 2.091 sg:total)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (2.51 sg:short vs. 1.875 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.051 sg:short vs. 0.443 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.459 sg:short vs. 0.852 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.538 sg:short vs. -0.039 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.904 sg:short vs. 0.328 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (2.903 sg:short vs. 2.337 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.08 sg:short vs. 1.587 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.131 sg:short vs. 0.641 sg:total)

Article Image

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on short courses since 2014 are Brendan Steele, Brandt Snedeker, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, and Bill Haas.

Patrick Rodgers is an interesting case because he’s a big hitter, but he thrives on these shorter courses that he can bully. His form is nothing to write home about lately and he has a wedding coming up soon (related? possible). This could be a spot to pop, but the form is concerning.

On the flip side, we have Jonathan Randolph, who has really struggled on these short tracks. In fact, he’s more than a shot worse per round, compared to his baseline. Ouch!

Weak Fields

There are plenty of angles that go into this one.

Some golfers get overwhelmed when going head-to-head against superstars.

Some golfers put too much pressure on themselves when they face tougher competition or play in bigger events.

Some golfers just prefer the courses that weak field events are played on (generally easier).

Most of this stuff of mental, so let’s see who ups their game against weaker fields.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Grayson Murray (1.382 sg:weak vs. 0.749 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.926 sg:weak vs. 1.311 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (1.244 sg:weak vs. 0.721 sg:total)
Ethan Tracy (0.154 sg:weak vs. -0.297 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.165 sg:weak vs. 1.725 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.042 sg:weak vs. 0.641 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.203 sg:weak vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.082 sg:weak vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.137 sg:weak vs. 0.766 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.25 sg:weak vs. 0.929 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against weak fields since 2014 are Chris Kirk, Chad Campbell, Nick Taylor, David Hearn, and Harold Varner III.

Harold Varner III is an interesting case here. He’s racked up three top 20s in weak field events over the last six weeks. He has seven other top 20s against weak fields, over the course of his career. He only has 14 career top 20s, so it’s easy to do the math and see that most of his damage is done against this caliber of field.

Par 70 Courses

Another week, another par 70.

It seems that we’ve had nothing but par 70s over the past few months.

When par 70s come around, it means that you MUST score on the par 4s and not implode on the par 3s. There are only two “gimme birdies” with the par 5s.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Brett Stegmaier (0.798 sg:par70 vs. 0.178 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.512 sg:par70 vs. -0.066 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.474 sg:par70 vs. 0.903 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.603 sg:par70 vs. 1.055 sg:total)
Tommy Gainey (0.033 sg:par70 vs. -0.465 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.415 sg:par70 vs. 1.005 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (1.118 sg:par70 vs. 0.721 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.24 sg:par70 vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.062 sg:par70 vs. 0.682 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.28 sg:par70 vs. 1.925 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on par 70s since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Daniel Berger, Russell Henley, Jason Dufner, and Brandt Snedeker.

Like we usually see with these par-70 lists, it’s full of plodders that don’t rely on racking up birdies and eagles on the par 5s.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

The field has averaged about 71 percent of greens hit here at Sedgefield Country Club.

That is extremely easy which explains the low scores that get posted here.

Easy greens mean less emphasis on scrambling but it also means position off the tee is vital. As long as you’re attacking from the fairways, you’re probably not missing many greens.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Roberto Diaz (0.666 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.279 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.689 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.701 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.09 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.433 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.929 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.593 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.119 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.674 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.201 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.447 sg:easy GIR vs. 1 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.206 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.77 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.981 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.55 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.445 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.023 sg:total)
Andres Romero (0.606 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.259 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on easy-to-hit greens since 2014 are Russell Henley, Webb Simpson, Daniel Berger, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jamie Lovemark.

Someone like Sam Ryder is a fairways-and-greens talent while Keith Mitchell is a bomb-and-gouger. There is no specific prototype that you must fit to succeed on these courses.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of six golfers that are positive in all of the angles above.

However, there are four that don’t live up to the test when it comes to long-term performance and/or form. These golfers have a good course fit, but it would still take a monster week for them to contend. Consider a small sprinkle but don’t make them a core play:

Fabian Gomez
Jonathan Byrd
Peter Malnati
Davis Love III

The Specialist

Billy Horschel
Chris Kirk

The specialist this week is Billy Horschel!

Article Image

Billy Ho checks the box in all five angles. Most notable are his upticks in performance when it comes to weak fields and bermudagrass greens.

He’s finished top 15 in seven of his last 17 starts on bermuda.

More recently, he arrives with cuts made in three of his last four starts with two of them doubling as top 20s. This should be a good spot to pick up another top 20 and he always brings winning upside (5 career wins).

Next up is Chris Kirk who strives when heading to bermuda. He’s posted top 20s in 15 of his last 36 starts on bermuda. That’s a tremendous strike rate, especially for someone that is very affordable on DraftKings this week.

The Anti-Specialists

We have two golfers that qualify as specialists this week but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Sung Kang
Martin Laird
Aaron Baddeley
Tom Hoge
Vaughn Taylor

These are easy fades in my opinion.

Vaughn Taylor has won at Pebble Beach Pro-Am which is played on short courses, so he could be worth a shot if you love him.

Tom Hoge can heat up on any course but this doesn’t seem like an ideal fit.

Martin Laird has ties to the area. If he didn’t then I don’t know if we’d even see him here.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Webb Simpson
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Shane Lowry
Billy Horschel
Sergio Garcia
Ryan Moore
Joaquin Niemann
Russell Henley
Keith Mitchell
Chris Kirk
Brandt Snedeker
Harold Varner III
David Lingmerth
Brian Gay
Daniel Berger
Hideki Matsuyama
Julian Suri
Ollie Schniederjans
Danny Lee
Jason Kokrak

This is a good blend of current form, long-term talent, and course history. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a final leaderboard that resembles this one.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
