Sony Open Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Collin Morikawa

We are kicking off the 2026 PGA season with a trip to Hawaii for the Sony Open, and as we often see on the islands, the wind is going to be an issue for this tournament.

As usual in my PGA weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another. You can then use this to your advantage when making your DFS and sports betting picks.

Sony Open Weather Forecast

Thursday, January 15th

Morning winds may start a bit under 10 mph, but they won’t stay there for long. We should see winds ramp up to 10-15 mph by the late morning, with a few showers possible as well (especially early morning). Afternoon winds continue climbing, likely reaching 15-20 mph or even higher during the bulk of the afternoon, gusting around 30 mph.

Friday, January 16th

Winds are still an issue, but they may be a bit less variable on Friday. I expect morning winds in the range of 10-15 mph, with afternoon winds a bit over 15 mph, likely gusting close to 30 mph.

Saturday, January 17th

We’re keeping the same weather pattern into the weekend. Morning winds are a bit breezy, but it’s more of an issue in the afternoon as sustained winds reach or surpass 15 mph.

Sunday, January 18th

Perhaps a bit lighter winds to close things out but still a breezy day. I think max afternoon winds will likely hold around 15 mph, with gusts to 25 mph.

Sony Open Weather Thoughts

The wind is an issue every day, especially in the afternoons, so make sure you are picking golfers that can navigate the breezy conditions. I might see a slight edge for Thursday AM / Friday PM golfers, mostly to take advantage of the lighter winds early on Thursday, but I think it’s a tiny edge even if the forecast varies. It’s mostly just a breezy tournament, and there’s not much that can be done to avoid the wind.
