Week 12 – Thanksgiving Slate

Welcome back to the NFL Core Stacks article. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already here, and I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday weekend!

I will do the usual Core Stacks article for the Sunday slate, but I wanted to offer a little something for this three-game Thursday slate. The slate is an ugly one for DFS purposes, but we are all playing with the same deck of cards. Let’s see what we can uncover with a chance to make some Turkey Day Dollars!

If you are new to this article series, check out the introduction below. If you are familiar with it, welcome back for another year!

An Introduction

In case you are new to the NFL DFS space or new to RotoGrinders, this was a new article series that began two years ago. The goal of the article is to detail some of my favorite GPP correlation plays of the week. These could be anything from full game stacks to simple QB/WR combinations to RB/DEF combinations to anything in between. I will include some chalkier builds and some lower owned builds throughout the article, and I will touch on our RotoGrinders projected ownership figures along the way.

You may ask yourself why stacks and correlation plays are so important in NFL DFS. Well, we have seen time and again throughout the years that correlation plays lead to winning tournament lineups.

If you want a more detailed explanation of this, you can check out the introduction to my Week 1 article here.

Now, let’s check out some stacks that I like for daily fantasy sports lineups for the Thanksgiving Slate of the 2022 season!

Core Stack #1A – Josh Allen + Stefon Diggs

Core Stack #1B – Devin Singletary + Amon-Ra St. Brown

Quick Analysis – I think you need to start your lineups with one of these stacks. The BUF/DET game is clearly the most attractive game to target for DFS purposes, partly because the Bills offense is so good, and partly because the Lions defense is so bad. We know Buffalo is going to score in this game. If you want the expensive chalk, then you start with Allen and Diggs. If you want to be a little more contrarian, you can go underweight on the Buffalo passing game in hopes that they control the game, get a big lead, and do damage on the ground with Singletary. You can then run that back with exposure to the Detroit passing game in the event that they have to abandon the run in the second half. Amon-Ra St. Brown has at least eight targets in four straight games and will surely continue to see heavy volume going forward.

Completing The Build – This depends on which way you go with your stack. If you start with Allen and Diggs, I like the idea of adding another expensive WR like Jefferson or Lamb, as most will choose to save with their other WR spots if they are playing Diggs. This will differentiate your lineup from the masses. If you go with the lower owned plays, I like the idea of a fully balanced build, which will also be quite contrarian on this slate.

Core Stack #2 – Saquon Barkley + Dalton Schultz

Quick Analysis – I plan to go underweight on the Dallas offense on this slate, as I expect the Giants to try to slow the game down and control possession as much as they can. Saquon Barkley was somehow stifled by the poor Detroit defense last week, and we can only hope that serves to lower ownership with some recency bias. After all, Barkley had a 35/152 rushing line the week prior, and he had a 14/81/1 rushing and 4/45/0 receiving line the first time these two teams met. He’s going to get the ball. Perhaps the Giants can even play with a lead here, and I don’t mind the run back with Dalton Schultz on the Dallas side. He’s not exciting, but he’s going to get targets at a weak TE position, and he provides some necessary salary relief on this slate.

Completing The Build – These are builds where I will look to spend up for both my RB selections and save at WR. You can pair Barkley and Dalvin Cook in a build setup that I don’t expect a lot of people to take on this short slate given the presence of quite a few top WR options.

Other Potential Low-Owned Options To Consider

D’Andre Swift – Swift was the primary RB option for the Lions at the beginning of the season, but Jamaal Williams played well in Swift’s absence in Weeks 4-7, and now Williams has been used as the primary early down ball carrier despite Swift’s return. The good news for Swift is that Swift is still the primary pass catching back in the offense, and the projected game script has the Lions trailing in this game. If you want a low-owned RB option, Swift could very well be a difference maker, particularly in the full PPR format on DraftKings.

Adam Thielen – It’s clear that Thielen has taken a back seat to Justin Jefferson in the Minnesota offense this season, but these three game slates often get weird. I’ve seen Thanksgiving slates busted by random receivers getting a couple touchdowns far too often. That could very well be Thielen this year. He’s still a solid red zone target, and let’s not forget that he had 24 total touchdowns in 2020 and 2021. This is the type of play that often wins these slates. Play Thielen in some lineups where you don’t have Jefferson.

Brock Wright – Wright appears to be in line to play the most snaps for Detroit at tight end in the second half of the season, and the position is very weak on this slate. Almost all the ownership is going to roll to Schultz and Hockenson, but it’s not like anyone projects for a Travis Kelce type of performance. A couple catches and a touchdown could be enough to make someone the highest scoring player at the position, and we know that Detroit will likely be throwing in this game.

Good luck this week!
