Week 13

Welcome back to the NFL Core Stacks article! It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of December, and we have just over a month of regular season football left to go. Time flies! The playoff race is starting to take shape, and injuries are starting to become more impactful. We also have to keep a closer eye on weather at this time of year. Let’s move on to a new week!

An Introduction

In case you are new to the NFL DFS space or new to RotoGrinders, this was a new article series that began two years ago. The goal of the article is to detail some of my favorite GPP correlation plays of the week. These could be anything from full game stacks to simple QB/WR combinations to RB/DEF combinations to anything in between. I will include some chalkier builds and some lower owned builds throughout the article, and I will touch on our RotoGrinders projected ownership figures along the way.

You may ask yourself why stacks and correlation plays are so important in NFL DFS. Well, we have seen time and again throughout the years that correlation plays lead to winning tournament lineups.

If you want a more detailed explanation of this, you can check out the introduction to my Week 1 article here.

Now, let’s check out some stacks that I like for daily fantasy sports lineups for Week 13 of the 2022 season!

Core Stack #1 – Bengals / Chiefs Game Stacks

Quick Analysis — This game isn’t going to sneak up on anybody, but it has a 53 point total and two offenses that are humming right now. We know the Chiefs will throw the ball with Mahomes and Kelce as the primary target. Isiah Pacheco is emerging as their clear RB1. On the Cincinnati side, you know Ja’Marr Chase has had this game circled for a month for a full scale return, and I think he’s 100% now. Oh, and Chase also had 11 catches for 266 yards and three scores against this Chiefs team in last year’s meeting. Give me the Burrow to Chase stacks this week with a Pacheco run-back. Alternatively, you could use Mahomes/Kelce and the Cincinnati rushing attack. Early ownership numbers are very low on Kelce, too. Stack this game up however you like.

Completing The Build – The key pieces in this game will be expensive, so you will need to find value at the other spots. I like the idea of potentially fading the chalky value RBs (like Montgomery and Pierce) and looking for cheaper options that will be lower owned. Players like Zonovan Knight and Nico Collins are interesting potential targets.

Core Stack #2 – Dalvin Cook + Garrett Wilson

Quick AnalysisDalvin Cook almost never gets to double digit ownership, and that will definitely be the case again this week. He does draw a tough matchup here against a good Jets defense, but the Bears did rush for almost 130 yards even without Justin Fields last week. Cook could certainly find room to run, and the Vikings are home favorites with a 24 point projection. If they can get a lead in the game, I like pairing Cook with a WR run-back on the other side of the game. Garrett Wilson is the obvious target, as he thrived last week with Mike White under center with a 5/95/2 line on eight targets. Take advantage of potential game flow with this stack.

Completing The Build – I like pairing this stack with a QB/WR or QB/TE combination, so it works along with a Burrow/Higgins (or Chase) and Mahomes/Kelce type of build. It fits in nicely if you round it out with a few value options, and you have two upside stacks in the same lineup.

Core Stack #3 – Kenneth Walker + SEA D/ST

Quick Analysis – Whether it’s John Wolford or Bryce Perkins or 51 year old Kurt Warner under center, the Rams are undeniably a mess right now. They can’t move the football, and they aren’t winning games. It has gotten so bad that the Seahawks are more than a full touchdown favorite on the road in this game. Yikes. Seattle’s defense has struggled of late, but that’s not an issue in this matchup. The Rams are projected for just 16 points, and I expect we’ll see a heavy dose of Walker on the Seattle side. Pair up Walker with the Seattle defense and ride that combination to some cash if the Seahawks dominate this game. This is a great spot for Walker to break out of his two week slump, especially if ownership starts to dwindle due to recency bias.

Completing The Build – Again, this is another combination that can work alongside a QB/WR or QB/TE pairing. Running more than one stack in a lineup is something that I will do a lot this week, and you could even look to the next stack to be that secondary option…

Core Stack #4 – Trevor Lawrence + Zay Jones

Quick Analysis – I am going to go out on a limb and say this is the first time Zay Jones has ever found his way into this article. Well, he’s earned it. Jones has somehow become the WR1 in Jacksonville these days, as he has garnered a whopping 24 targets over the last two contests. He has also parlayed those targets into 19 receptions and over 220 yards. It’s only a matter of time before he gets some touchdowns to go along with that production. Trevor Lawrence is playing more confident football, and they also benefit from a matchup against a weak Detroit defense this week. You could even throw in Travis Etienne and make it a full Jags offense stack if you so choose.

Completing The Build – Lawrence and Jones are both quite affordable, so you can round this out with some expensive one-off plays. Travis Kelce and Ja’Marr Chase could work in this type of build, as would a “spendy” RB1 like Austin Ekeler or Derrick Henry.

Other Potential Low-Owned Options To Consider

Josh Jacobs – Jacobs is quietly becoming one of the best running backs in football. He has 21, 24, and 33 carries in the last three games. He has 19 total targets in the passing game during that stretch. He logged over 300 yards from scrimmage in last week’s win over the Seahawks. Early projections have him at 7% ownership on FD. He will be higher owned on DK because he is more affordable there, but Jacobs is clearly a player that I want to be overweight on this week.

Tyreek Hill – This could be the lowest ownership we see on Hill all year. It’s certainly warranted given the very difficult matchup against a San Francisco defense that is stifling everyone right now, but a low-owned Hill always has the chance to break a slate with a couple of big plays. He doesn’t need to be a cornerstone of your builds, but he definitely makes for a risk/reward spend up option on a week where everyone will likely cruise right past his name.

T.J. Hockenson – Tight end remains a dumpster fire these days. If you’re not paying up for Kelce, Hockenson is perhaps the best point per dollar option available. He has 17 catches and 25 targets over the last three weeks, and he found the end zone on Thanksgiving night against New England. He is clearly enjoying life in Minnesota, and defenses are going to continue to focus on Justin Jefferson to Hockenson’s benefit.

Good luck this week!
