Sunday Showdown with Splits: Mayakoba Championship

After firing a 9-under 62 in Saturday’s third round, Viktor Hovland is on the cusp of repeating as champion at Mayakoba. He holds a two-shot lead over the surging Talor Gooch who fired a 63 of his own. If Hovland is able to hold on, it would be his third PGA Tour victory, none of which would have come on American soil. He leads the field by a wide margin in ball-striking and loves the Paspalum greens. Justin Thomas shot a 64 and is lurking only three shots back. Carlos Ortiz rounds out the top-4 at 14-under par. With Hovland and Thomas being two of the best players in the world, and considering their successful past performances on Sundays, it would be a surprise if someone else took home the trophy. Similar to the last few weeks, with no ShotLink or Strokes Gained data for this week, there is no chart, and we will have to rely on some of the “old-school” statistics like Driving Accuracy and GIR% and plain intuition.
