THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Mackenzie Hughes

We’re teeing off this week for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, in McKinney Texas just north of Dallas. As it typical in Texas during severe weather season, the weather will keep us on our toes.

As usual in my golf weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another.

You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on the best DFS sites.

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson Weather Forecast

Thursday, May 1st

What a way to start the tournament! Light winds around 5 mph throughout the day, with no rain issues. As an added bonus, heavy rain on Wednesday could soften the greens somewhat, especially for early Thursday golfers.

Friday, May 2nd

Things get more interesting on Day 2. A storm complex north of McKinney will try to build south, potentially bringing some wind and rain with it. None of this is set in stone (in fact, this setup is famously fickle), but for now models are showing storm-related winds pushing gusts over 30 mph in the morning. Winds unrelated to the storm will only be around 10 mph, and once things settle down, I expect winds will return to that level in the afternoon. Again I’ll note that trying to pinpoint storm-fueled winds days out is not a high-confidence forecast.

Saturday, May 3rd

Back to dry and quiet weather, winds should peak around noon at a bit over 10 mph.

Sunday, May 4th

Dry with increasing winds. I expect 10-15 mph winds by the afternoon.

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson Weather Thoughts

Thursday is amazing all around, though I do have the slightest of leans towards Thursday morning in the hopes that Wednesday’s rain will make for some soft greens early in the day. Friday is a bit chaotic, but as of now I have a slight lean towards the afternoon, in the hopes it minimizes storm-related winds. That isn’t set in stone, but when combined with my slight lean on Thursday, I do have a preference for a Thursday AM / Friday PM draw. As always, make sure you are taking tips from our RotoGrinders golf experts to make the most of your builds!
