The Open Championship Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Viktor Hovland

We tee off this week in Portrush, Ireland for The Open Championship, and as we often see in this tournament, the weather will show it’s teeth.

As usual in my PGA weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another.

You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on the best DFS sites.

The Open Championship Weather Forecast

Thursday, July 17th

Morning winds around 10 mph will climb to 10-15 mph by the late morning. Most of the afternoon should see sustained winds around or just under 15 mph, with gusts over 20 mph. There are some early indications that winds might lay down in the late afternoon. Scattered showers and storms are possible all day.

Friday, July 18th

A bit lighter wind-wise, though scattered showers will continue to be an issue. Winds start around 10-15 mph in the morning, tapering off to 10 mph or less for most of the day.

Saturday, July 19th

Scattered showers with winds gradually building through the day, peaking in the afternoon around 10-15 mph sustained with stronger gusts.

Sunday, July 20th

Rain chances continue and are possible at any point in the day. Winds will gradually build through the afternoon but should peak around 10 mph sustained with stronger gusts.

The Open Championship Weather Thoughts

Pretty messy stuff here for The Open Championship. Between the general volatility of the weather in Ireland (please check back for updates) and the fact that rain could delay things at times, it may be tough to pinpoint an edge. Right now, I think a Thursday AM / Friday PM build helps you minimize wind exposure and may even get you the better of the draw on both days, but I don’t feel that it’s a lock yet.
