How Tropical Storm Debby Could Impact the Wyndham Championship

RainyGolfRoth

The Wyndham Championship is scheduled to play right as Tropical Storm Debby (or what’s left of T.S. Debby at that point) will be drenching North Carolina. I think there’s a good chance we see days that are either not completed or not even attempted due to rain and flooding concerns.

Along with the rain, we’ll also discuss how the wind can impact play, and you can always find my latest forecast on the PGA weather page. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts. With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another. You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on DFS sites and sportsbooks.

Wyndham Championship Weather Forecast

Thursday, August 8th

Debby impacts gradually ramp up through the day. We’ll likely start with scattered light rain and should be dealing with widespread heavy rain by the afternoon, as well as winds gusting over 30 mph. They might be able to start the tournament on time, but I don’t think it’s likely they play a full day.

Friday, August 9th

The worst of the weather might be overnight Thursday into Friday, which could leave us with a very soggy course Friday morning, plus ongoing rain. I’m not sure the course will be playable as scheduled Friday morning, but rain does taper off a bit late Friday afternoon. In fact Friday afternoon looks fairly decent all around, with wind dropping down to manageable levels and rain clearing out.

Saturday, August 10th

Our first dry day, with manageable winds around 10-15 mph.

Sunday, August 11th

Nice weather to close things out. No rain and relatively light winds.

Wyndham Championship Weather Thoughts

It’s almost impossible to try to find a wave advantage here because I don’t think golfers will be teeing off as scheduled. There will likely be times (if not entire days) that are a washout. The uncertainty in when golfers will tee off means I can’t pinpoint who might see an advantage. I’ll monitor things leading up to the tournament and see if I can provide any helpful insight.
