U.S. Open Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Xander Schauffele

We’re headed just northeast of Pittsburgh this week to Oakmont, PA for the illustrious U.S. Open. While the weather starts on a high note, it turns a bit ugly for the weekend.

As usual in my PGA weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another.

You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on the best DFS sites.

U.S. Open Weather Forecast

Thursday, June 12th

Great weather. Winds stay around 5 mph sustained all day long, with no rain chances.

Friday, June 13th

Pretty solid stuff for day 2. Winds remain light (sustained 5 mph). I’ve seen models indicating we could get wind gusts of 10-15 mph in the early morning, and perhaps again in the afternoon, but “gusts of 10-15 mph” is basically just another way of saying “light winds,” so I’m not concerned either way. There is a chance for a storm in the afternoon, but it is more likely those miss east and they golf without issue.

Saturday, June 14th

Winds stay fairly light (5-10 mph), but rain chances climb. A shower or storm is possible at any time.

Sunday, June 15th

Looks to me like the best chance for rain and storms. A delay or even potentially having to punt the tournament finish to Monday is possible.

U.S. Open Weather Thoughts

The U.S. Open weather is essentially “great weather day 1 and 2 – ugly weather for the weekend.” I don’t think we see any weather-related wave advantages over the first couple of days. Rain chances climbing over the weekend could lead to a delay at any time, but I don’t see any actionable betting advantage in that time frame either.
