Valero Texas Open Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Spieth

The Valero Texas Open brings us to lovely San Antonio, TX, a great place to visit (despite what Charles Barkley says) and an excellent spot for some golf. We do have some wind and rain concern this week worth diving in to.

As usual in my golf weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another.

You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on the best DFS sites.

Valero Texas Open Weather Forecast

Thursday, April 3rd

A bit gusty to start, with sustained winds at 10mph and gusts over 20mph early in the morning. Those will taper off quickly through the mid-morning, and most of the day will be fine with just a 5mph wind. Winds start to tick up again late afternoon to 10mph sustained with stronger gusts.

Friday, April 4th

It’s a bit breezy through the day, with sustained winds at 10mph and stronger gusts possible at any time, but as of now, it looks almost uniformly breezy, with no clear advantage to be had based on tee times. There’s also a chance of a downpour.

Saturday, April 5th

A slim chance of rain with increasing winds. We’ll see 10mph winds to start the day, but those will climb to 15-20mph with stronger gusts by the afternoon.

Sunday, April 6th

Reversing our wind pattern from what we’ll see Saturday, winds should be strongest early morning and taper off throughout the day.

Valero Texas Open Weather Thoughts

Outside of “maybe don’t pick the very earliest golfers on Thursday”, I don’t see much of a weather edge for the first couple of days. I think the more pronounced difference generally comes on the weekend, with both Saturday and Sunday showing changing winds throughout the day.
