On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Clippers will host the Golden State Warriors. Entering play, Los Angeles (31-28) is tied for the fifth-best record in the Western Conference, with Golden State (29-28) trailing them by one game in the standings. This evening, oddsmakers are expecting the Clippers to get the job done at home, pricing them as 8-point home favorites on the spread.

Golden State Warriors

Curry, Wiggins OUT

Per Cleaning the Glass, when Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins are both off of the floor at the same time this season, Golden State ranks in the 27th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 29th percentile in defensive efficiency. Missing two of their top-four scoring options, the Warriors are likely to struggle to score the basketball on Tuesday.

Who will step up for Golden State?

When Curry and Wiggins are both off of the court this year, Jordan Poole (+5.4%) sees the largest increase in usage of any player on the Warriors’ roster. In these situations, he is averaging 29.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per 36 minutes of action. Expect him to be heavily involved in the game plan this evening against the Clippers.

Los Angeles Clippers

Reduced workload

According to Tomer Azarly, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will have their minutes capped “a bit” until the All-Star break. Entering play on Tuesday, George and Leonard are the only two members of the Clippers’ roster averaging more than 16.9 points per game this year. If their workload is reduced below 30 minutes, Norman Powell and others will be forced to contribute more offensively for this group.

Who is likely to take advantage of increased opportunities?

Per CourtIQ, Powell (+4.8%) sees the largest increase in usage when both Leonard and George are off of the floor this season. He is the obvious candidate to see his opportunities increase if the Clippers hold true in their commitment to limiting the workload of their stars.

Warriors vs. Clippers – Picks & Predictions

In 28 road games this season, the Golden State Warriors have only seven wins and rank 25th out of 30 teams in the NBA in Net Rating. From December 14 to January 10, when Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins were both out of the lineup earlier this season, Golden State won only one of their five road contests. In those five games, they were outscored by 12.6 points per 100 possessions, which was the worst mark in the entire league.

Notably, the Warriors ranked 27th in offensive efficiency during that stretch of action. Tonight, they have a date with a Los Angeles Clippers defense that ranks third in defensive efficiency at home since Kawhi Leonard returned to the floor on December 5. In their last 14 home games, Los Angeles is allowing only 108.2 points per 100 possessions. Expect the Clippers to make life difficult for the Warriors this evening – take the under on Golden State’s team total in this spot.
