Waste Management Open Picks & Projections
Farmers Insurance Open Recap

Before we get into this week’s event, let’s quickly recap the Farmers Insurance Open. It was a strange week in which the top 3 favorites heading into the week either missed the cut or had to withdraw. You typically like to see a Sunday full of big names contending, but Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Brandt Snedeker were all MIA. After leading for most of the day Sunday, Gary Woodland hit the ball out of bounds on one of his final holes and Scott Stallings ended up winning the tournament by one stroke after he birdied the last hole.
As far as the picks, it was an average week at best. I really liked Brandt Snedeker last week and he failed to make the cut. K.J. Choi was really the only pick that performed above and beyond his expectations. Hopefully we can get back on track with this week’s picks.
Waste Management Open Preview
This is one of my favorite events of the year. The event takes place at the TPC Scottsdale course in Arizona. The greatest part about this tournament is the par-3 16th hole. It has become a famous hole because it is in an enclosed arena with seating for nearly 20,000 fans. There aren’t many moments in golf that feature rowdy fans screaming, but the 16th hole at Scottsdale give us just that. It’s fitting that this event is the same week as the Super Bowl.
The TPC Scottsdale is a fairly easy course as far as PGA standards are concerned. The course features a par 71 and is one of four events last year that had an average score of less than 70 per round. Birdies and Eagles will be plentiful this week so make sure to keep that in mind when choosing your golfers. This event will feature a full field that will have a cut after the first two rounds. The top 70 golfers and ties will advance to the weekend.
As far as history of this event is concerned, Phil Mickelson has owned this event. He is a 3-time winner of this event and is the defending champ. However, Mickelson has announced that he will not play in the event this week as he is still dealing with some back issues that caused him to withdraw from last week’s event. That leaves Webb Simpson as the odds on favorite to win this week. Update: Mickelson is still questionable to play in this week’s event, check back her for an update
Waste Management Open – DS Picks
My plan for PGA this season is to switch off weeks between DraftStreet & DraftKings and then do picks and projections for both sites for some of the bigger events of the season. This week’s picks are based on DraftStreet’s salaries and scoring structure.

- Keegan Bradley: $23,537 – Bradley is one of my favorite golfers this week. He has posted top 20 finishes in each of his last 7 events and is playing some great golf right now. Bradley finished tied for 24th in this event last season, but should be able to improve on that this week. If Mickelson happens to sit out this week, Bradley and Simpson will be the odds on favorites to win. I think Bradley has a top 10 finish in him this week. He should be in contention come Sunday.
- Ryan Moore: $20,944 – For those of you that are new to daily fantasy golf, Moore may not be a name that you recognize. He’s not a household name in golf, well at least not yet. He is off to a blazing start to the season though. He has played in 5 events, made all 5 cuts, and finished in the top 10 in 3 of those events. So you get a red hot golfer that has a great track record on this course. Last year, Moore finished in 4th place in this event with a 22-under par. He is my dark horse to win it all this week.
- Robert Garrigus: $13,791 – Garrigus is one of those golfers that either missed the cut or finishes in the top 30. He doesn’t have many 40th to 70th place finishes on his resume. I like to think of him as a boom or bust type of player in the daily fantasy golf world. I really like him this week though. He played well in last week’s event and finished tied for 11th in this event last season. Garrigus is a very cheap play that could crack the top 10 this week.
- Justin Leonard: $13,708 – Leonard was seemingly out of the picture for a few years as far as being a top golfer, but he has gotten off to a roaring start to his 2013-14 season. Leonard has already made the cut in all 6 of the events that he has entered and has 2 top 10 finishes to boot. Leonard is really cheap this week and is flying under the radar. He should be a lock to make the cut as he has had great success on this course in the past.
