This week, Joe Cistaro breaks down the course and golf betting picks for the 2021 Wyndham Championship. Here’s a closer look at golf odds across online sportsbooks.

The PGA Tour regular season closes in Greensboro, NC at the 2021 Wyndham Championship. The tournament at Sedgefield Country Club represents the final opportunity for golfers to qualify for the 125-man field at the Northern Trust Open. Many golfers look to improve their position while a handful of golfers look to burst the bubble and sneak into the top 125 with a strong performance this week. Let’s take a look at this week’s field.

Wyndham Championship Golf Odds

At the time of this writing — evening of August 9th — BetMGM posts the following outright odds. The below list features all golfers with odds 40/1 and shorter.

Golfer Odds (8/9)
Webb Simpson +1200
Hideki Matsuyama +1200
Louis Oosthuizen +1400
Patrick Reed +2200
Jason Kokrak +2500
Brian Harman +2800
Will Zalatoris +2800
Sungjae Im +3000
Russell Henley +3300
Gary Woodland +4000
Si Woo Kim +4000
Kevin Na +4000
Kevin Streelman +4000
Seamus Power +4000

Webb Simpson headlines the field but not because of his recent play. Instead, Simpson enjoys a home field advantage at the North Carolina course where he boasts four consecutive T5 finishes. Hideki Matsuyama and Louis Oosthuizen will pass on a break before the playoffs. Patrick Reed, Jason Kokrak, Brian Harman, and Will Zalatoris are just a few additional top names in the field.

Who needs a big week? Camilo Villegas, Rickie Fowler, Roger Sloan, and others are a measly few spots away from making the cut for the first round of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Countrymen Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose both rest just outside of the top 130 players and will need a great showing to play in golf’s postseason.

Check the standings prior to building your betting card. Let’s take a look at this week’s course and what type of golfers profile well at the Wyndham.

Wyndham Championship Betting Preview

Sedgefield Country Club will host the Wyndham Championship again and if history proves true — expect birdies. Many birdies. A bountiful plethora of birdies. Every winner since 2016 has bested 20-under par with Jim Herman hoisting the trophy in 2020 at -21.

The course is a par 70 at just north of 7100 yards. The two par fives look to be the easiest holes on the golf course as both holes seem reachable on the card. Players will face a ton of gettable Par 4s — eight Par 4s will rest between 400 and 450 yards.

A Donald Ross design, the greens are composed of Bermuda grass at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. A hot putter will be of import as the winner will likely need to go low to get the job done. SG: Approach will be vital this week (as it usually is) in a birdiefest. I will be taking a look at birdie-or-better, SG: Putting, proximity from 150-175 yards, and the aforementioned Par 4 and Par 5 lengths. The fairways should be pretty easy to hit at Sedgefield, so I will surely sprinkle in some SG: OTT.

With that said, let’s build our betting card.

Wyndham Championship Betting Picks

Jason Kokrak +2800 (Caesars)

Last week, I included Jason Kokrak in my WGC betting picks article at a much better price. While the price is not quite as nice, the weaker field means Jason Kokrak needs to be considered amongst the favorites. Currently ranked 12th in the FedEx Cup standings, Kokrak could leap into the top 10 with a big performance.

Kokrak owns three T20 finishes at the Wyndham with this best a 6th in 2019. He leads the field in birdies-or-better — a statistic that makes plenty of sense when you consider his prowess off the tee (7th in SG) and on the green (4th in SG). Kokrak didn’t fare too well at the final WGC event of the season but has two victories this golf season.

I am going back to the well with Jason Kokrak for a full-unit. Print your ticket at William Hill for the best price.

Russell Henley +3200 (FanDuel)

One of the top approach players in the field, Russell Henley returns to Wyndham this week looking to tune up prior to the FedEx Cup. With a spot in the first round of the playoffs sewn up, Henley will look to build on his resume (46th) with a strong finish at this week’s tournament.

Henley missed the cut at the Open Championship after putting together a streak of three T20 finishes including a great performance at the US Open. He ranks third in SG: Approach over his last 36 rounds. Iron play will be of paramount importance this week as players will need to create as many opportunities as possible for birdie putts. Henley gained 3.2 strokes on approach at the Wyndham last season — good for a top 10.

I am going to wager another unit on Henley this week in hopes that he builds on last year’s performance and makes a run at a big victory ahead of the playoffs.

Hank Lebioda +7000 (DraftKings)

Hank Lebioda withdrew at the 3M Open despite making the cut because of a health scare for his father. Hank was on a run of three consecutive T10 finishes and could have made some noise that weekend if not for the withdrawal.

From what I could glean online, Lebioda seems ready to make his return to the tour with his father on the mend. Lebioda, despite the recent surge, returns to the longshot price range on most sports betting sites and value range for DFS lineups. Still, Hank sits inside the top ten over his previous 36 rounds in putting and strokes gained on Par 4s from 400-450 yards. In both of his appearances at Wyndham, he played the weekend.

Resting at 90th in the FedEx Cup standings, Hank could use a strong finish to improve his positioning ahead of the playoffs. With this really nice price tag, a half-unit will do the trick.

Chez Reavie +10000 (DraftKings)

Chez Reavie did not do enough with a strong opening round at the Barracuda Championship last week. Missing an opportunity for valuable FedEx Cup points, Reavie is in 114th place ahead of this week’s tournament at Sedgefield Country Club.

A strong approach player (23rd), Reavie ranks 4th in proximity from 150-175 yards — a key distance for players this week. Reavie is in reasonably good form, with two T20 finishes over his last four starts including an 11th at the 3M Open that could have been far greater. Reavie needs a good finish to avoid falling outside of the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings but also to gain ground prior to the initial round at the Northern Trust. The field will be significantly better next week — this could be a better opportunity for Reavie to make a move.

For a 100/1 price, a quarter unit is worth the speculation.

Well, that’s that. The regular season is nearly behind us with three weeks of playoffs ahead. We will be back next week to cover the 125-man field at the Northern Trust. Good luck this week with all of your bets.
