Making his long-awaited return to the UFC, Conor McGregor seemingly has big plans for 2020, but he’ll need to get on track right away with a victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
McGregor hasn’t fought since he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018, and he hasn’t won a fight since he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the Lightweight strap in 2016. That’s a point to note at the very least, especially since McGregor will be returning to the Welterweight division in 2020.
Although he holds incredible power in his hands, McGregor is simply better built for the Lightweight division than he is for the Welterweight division, and we’ve seen him fall short against much larger opponents in this weight class, Nate Diaz being the one example. To his credit, McGregor built his frame up for the rematch with Diaz, controlled his cardio better and won an impressive victory, but it still does not change the fact that he’s better suited for Lightweight.
Cerrone has more experience than nearly any other fighter in the promotion, and there’s potential for him to give McGregor trouble in this matchup if variance swings the right way. He’s also approaching the end of his career, and his durability is a major question mark in this bout, which is one of the main reasons why McGregor will still come in as a heavy favorite.
Cerrone has always struggled to take damage to his body, stemming from accidents he’s had in the past, and he’s been hurt and finished by body strikes on multiple occasions. His chin has started to decline in recent years as well which is a major red flag, he’s suffered brutal knockout losses to Jorge Masvidal, and most recently Justin Gaethje.
