Game Script’s Affect on Field Goal Attempts

Game script plays a large role in determining how many opportunities a kicker will get to score (fantasy) points. When a kicker’s team is in positive game script, it likely will have better field position, needing to travel less distance to get into field goal range. Positive game script also means a greater likelihood of building a lead and not being forced to forgo field goals on fourth down in favor of attempting to erase the deficit quickly with touchdowns. There is a huge disparity between how often teams attempt field goals on fourth down inside the 35-yard line when leading compared to when trailing (Fig. 2).
