The MLB Grind Down+ Articles are built to reflect the statistically-driven nature of baseball. For MLB, our experts handpick players in two tiers of starting pitchers and four tiers of batters.

What Stats are shown in Grind Down+?
Legend of MLB Grind Down+: Pitchers
- RIGHT/LEFT – Starting Pitcher Throwing Hand
- HOME/ROAD – Shows whether SP is pitching at home or on the road.
- Salary – Salary is shown in the light blue box in the top right corner of each pitcher table.
- Pitcher vs. Opp Batters Totals – Sum of all opponent batters stats vs. the given starting pitcher
1) H/AB – Opponent Batters Hits Per At Bat
2) XBHA – Extra base hits allowed
3) SO – Strikeouts against opponent batters
4) AVG – Opponent Batters Batting Average
5) OBP – Opponent Batters On Base Percentage
6) SLG – Opponent Batters Slugging Percentage
7) OPS – Opponent Batters On Base + Slugging Percentage
- Pitcher Home/Road Splits – Starting Pitcher splits based on whether he is pitching at home or on the road.
1) REC – Home/Road Record
2) ERA – Earned Run Average
3) WHIP – Walks Allowed + Hits Allowed Divided by Innings Pitched
4) K/9 – Strikeouts Per Nine Innings Pitched
5) HRA – Home Runs Allowed
6) CG – Complete Games Pitched
7) SHO – Shutouts Pitched

- POS – Player Position
- TM – Player Team
- Salary – Player Site-Specific Salary
- OPP-SP – Opposing Starting Pitcher
1) Batter vs. Pitcher Splits – Batter stats against their opposing starting pitcher each day.
- BvP BA – Batting average vs. opposing starting pitcher. Hits per AB shown in parentheses.
- BvP SLG – Slugging percentage vs. opposing starting pitcher (total bases divided by at bats)
- BvP OPS – On Base + Slugging Percentage vs. opposing starting pitcher
2) Batter vs. Left/Right Splits – Batter stats against the hand of their opponent starting pitcher each day. For example, if Ryan Braun is facing CC Sabathia, stats shown would be Ryan Braun vs. left handed pitching because Sabathia is a lefty.
- L/R BA – Left/right batting average
- L/R SLG – Left/right slugging percentage (total bases divided by at bats)
- L/R OPS – Left/right on base + slugging percentage
3) PARK – Ballpark ratings. Based on runs scored for the 2013 season in each stadium. Numbers above 1 are considered parks that favor batters. Park factors below 1 are considered to favor pitchers.
What do the colored backgrounds mean?
You’ll notice that some of the players will have green or red backgrounds for some of their statistics. These are based on set tiers for each statistic. Green backgrounds imply a stat that a batter or pitcher excels in. Red Backgrounds are for an area where the batter or pitcher struggles.

1) K/9 – Over 8 K/9 shown in green.
Under 5 K/9 shown in red.
2) ERA – ERA under 3 shown in green.
ERA over 5 shown in red.
3) BA-A – Batting average against under .230 shown in green
Batting average against over .310 shown in red
Batter Color Coding
1) OPS – OPS over .900 shown in green
OPS under .500 shown in red
2) SLG – Slugging percentage over .600 shown in green
Slugging percentage under .300 shown in red
3) AVG – Batting average over .300 shown in green.
Batting average under .200 shown in red.
4) Park Factors – Park factor over 1.1 shown in green.
Park factor under 0.9 shown in red.
NBA Grind Down+ Articles
What is NBA Grind Down+?
The NBA Grind Down Plus articles are broken down into 4 salary tiers of 4-5 players per tier, dependent on the total number of games each day. These will be posted any day there are 3 or more games taking place and are posted each day by 2 PM EST.
These Grind Down+ articles focus more on matchup than set statistics. Shown next to each player’s name is their salary, opponents defense vs. position rank for the entire season, and opponents defense vs. position rank for the last 10 games played.
Defense vs. position rankings are based on Fantasy Points per game allowed to each position on the court (point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center). They correspond to each player’s position and matchup.
