This Top Rated Stack Has Been Struggling

With a lack of quality pitching on tonight’s small slate, but all the best matchups at the top of the board, early projections (which are fluid and updated throughout the day) suggest that DraftKings players will favor value bats in Minnesota over the prowess of Houston bats atop the board. With slightly softer pricing on FanDuel, this situation flip-flops with the Astros projected to be most popular. It is the Houston Astros that smash the slate most often in currently simulations, a bit ahead of the Twins and Cardinals. No surprise that the Twins are the runaway top projected value stack on DraftKings, but by a lesser margin over the Marlins on FanDuel, the only site the Philadelphia/Marlins game is available on tonight.

The likely need to pay up for pitching and perhaps opt for more value than punch with bats, suggests the Astros may be the top rated stack tonight. There is very little difference between their current Smash and Own projections on either site with neither reaching 20%, despite the size of the slate. James Kaprielian has just a 5.3 K-BB% and 43.8 Z-O-Swing%. A 4.77 xERA aligns well with his 4.79 ERA. All other estimators are above five and he’s completed six innings just once since the break. Theoretically, the Astros should blast him. Oddly, none of his 22 starts this season have been against this divisional opponent.

The New York Mets were nearly completely shut down by the Chicago Cubs this week, but still have one of the top run lines on the board against a decent pitcher in J.T. Brubaker, who has had a tough run of it (12 runs, 18 innings) against three of the best offenses in the league (Braves, Blue Jays, Cardinals) over his last three starts (and gets another one here, though they are struggling) as they’ve popped him for four home runs, but only four barrels (7.0%). For the season, a .326 BABIP is responsible for 4.36 ERA that’s above all estimators except for a 4.40 xERA, suggesting he may deserve some of that punishment with a 40.7% hard hit rate (95+ mph EV). The Pirates have to be pretty content with the 14.5 K-BB% and remaining estimators nearly half a run lower though. He actually has eight Quality Starts in his last 18 outings. Brubaker has just two pitches graded better than average by Statcast, but the Mets have hit both fastballs (0.41 wFB/C) and curveballs (0.96 wCB/C) very well since the break. Even worse, Brubaker throws a slider 31.3% of the time that’s been his worst pitch (1.3 RV/100) and the Mets hammer that one too (0.42 wSL/C). The Mets currently project the second best DraftKings Leverage Rating. Perhaps daily fantasy players won’t want to go back to the well that’s come up dry for them in three straight games. Pete Alonso has homered in each of the last two and nobody in the projected New York lineup falls below a 96 wRC+ vs RHP this year.

The St Louis Cardinals are a top rated stack on FanDuel (second behind the Astros). Chase Anderson has struck out 11 of 40 batters (10.8 SwStr%) with 10 of 20 batted balls on the ground and an 87.1 mph EV, but has also walked nine. In his ninth season, he hasn’t really deviated from his career 12.2 K-BB%, but if the ground ball thing is real, that would certainly be a brand new wrinkle. His four-seam rate (28.2%) is the lowest of his career, but still his most thrown pitch and though the 13.8% sinker rate isn’t the highest of his career, it is a five year high. It’s a tough park, but the Cardinals have a board high 121 wRC+ at home this season. More than half the projected lineup exceeds a 120 wRC+ vs RHP this year.

Facing This Lefty is Almost Like a Night at Coors

The Rockies are away from Coors tonight, while the Mets are facing Patrick Corbin, which is almost like a night at Coors. They top the board at 5.29 implied runs tonight, slightly ahead of the Yankees at home against Marco Gonzales with the White Sox (Spenser Watkins) and Guardians (Zach Davies) are at five run team totals as well. No other offense reaches the four and a half run mark on Monday night, while Watkins has been much better since returning to the rotation a month ago and there is some rain risk in Cleveland, which essentially makes this a New York slate in terms of hitters. PlateIQ projections (which are fluid and subject to change) agree.

The Mets and Yankees are the only two offenses to boast multiple top 10 projected hitters tonight. Corbin had struck out 15 of his last 51 batters going into his Dodger Stadium start last time out. He faced just 10 batters without a strikeout and has now allowed 21 runs (20 earned) over his last 16.2 innings with 9.7% Barrels/BBE. He’s now up to a 6.49 ERA on the season, which includes a .379 BABIP and 62.3 LOB%, but also a strikeout rate below 20%, 90.7 mph EV and 9.9% Barrels/BBE. Estimators range from a 4.04 xFIP, which claims he may still be a league average pitcher, to a 5.71 xERA, which suggests he no longer has a place in the league. Corbin doesn’t have a single pitch that grades out better than a 1.7 RV/100 (where positive numbers are bad) and the Mets are in the top half of third of the league against every pitch he throws. RHBs have a wOBA and xwOBA within two points of .385 against Corbin this season, while LHBs are dragged down by Statcast (.375 wOBA, .307 xwOBA), but haven’t been bad either. Starling Marte (168 wRC+, .217 ISO vs LHP in 2022) and Pete Alonso (141 wRC+, .244 ISO) are each top five projected bats, while Brandon Nimmo (127 wRC+, .176 ISO) isn’t far behind.

Marco Gonzales has tossed 11 Quality Starts in his last 16 tries, despite an 11.1 K% (3.4 K-BB%) over that span because he’s stranded 80% of runners, while he’s been able to avoid hard contact (87.6 mph EV and barrels (6.3%). That said, a 4.62 xERA is his only estimate within a run of a 3.66 ERA (he allowed eigh unearned runs in April and 10 altogether this season), so we shouldn’t expect his current run suppression success to continue. A soft-tossing, contact prone lefties is in trouble against this Yankee lineup, despite the favorable contact profile. It’s actually LHBs (.359 wOBA, .382 xwOBA) that have had the advantage on Gonzales over RHBs (.329 wOBA, .321 xwOBA) this year. That probably explains that while Aaron Judge (157 wRC+, .343 ISO) is the top projected bat on the board, Anthony Rizzo (137 wRC+, .289 ISO) is also a top five projected value as well with Gleyber Torres (169 wRC+, .351 ISO) rounding out the top 10.

Top Potential Run Environment Behind Coors Tonight

A quick stroll through Weather Edge projects one park to be significantly affected by weather and in a way that may greatly benefit hitters. While the park in Washington already starts off as a positive run environment, the potential boost tonight could make it a clear second only to Coors tonight, yet the teams that will play there tonight are outside the six teams with implied run lines above five. In fact, the home offense appears on the bottom half of the board with just a 4.21 team total. We may be dealing with some very undervalued bats here. For the visitors (4.79 runs), it’s really pretty simple. Sean Nolin is a 31 year-old rookie, who will be facing the Mets for the third time in his four starts and first time at home. While the overall results haven’t been terrible, just 23.1% of his contact has been on the ground this year. He’s also been held below 85 pitches in each start. That means plenty of the only bullpen in baseball with an ERA, FIP, xFIP and SIERA above five over the last 30 days. Believe it or not, Brandon Nimmo has been very successful against same-handed pitching this season (165 wRC+, .384 xwOBA), while Pete Alonso (141 wRC+, .333 ISO) and Javier Baez (135 wRC+, .281 ISO) have supplied the right-handed power.

For the home team, some of the samples against LHP aren’t very large, but among the seven projected starters with more than 10 PAs against southpaws this year, only one dips below a 110 wRC+ or .189 ISO (Alcides Escobar, of course). Rich Hill has 24 strikeouts over 32.1 innings and 137 batters faced as a Met. Eight of them came in his last start (five innings, 22 Nationals faced) with a 14.3 SwStr% that spikes his rate up to 7.8% as a Met. He has a perfectly symmetrical 4.83 ERA and FIP with his new team. For the season, his 4.11 ERA is below estimators tightly packed between 4.47 (SIERA) and 4.75 (xFIP). His ground ball rate is below 35% too though with RHBs owning a .333 wOBA (.328 xwOBA) against him this year. Lane Thomas (225 wRC+, .194 ISO), Yadiel Hernandez (154 wRC+, .260 ISO) and Carter Kieboom (110 wRC+, .205 ISO) are extremely cheap on either site.

Double Digit Walk and Barrel Rates are Problems in this Park

The only redeeming statistic through nine major league starts for Vladimir Gutierrez is a 10 SwStr% that projects a somewhat higher strikeout rate than his current 16.5%, though even that’s a well below average mark in 2021. A 10.6 BB% and 10.8% Barrels/BBE are even bigger problems. A 4.77 xERA is the only estimator below five and still half a run above his actual ERA (4.29) with a .248 BABIP and 78.2 LOB%. While Gutierrez has held LHBs to a league average .312 wOBA, that gets bumped to a .331 xwOBA by Statcast, yet he still has a bit of a reverse split (RHBs .341 wOBA, .349 xwOBA). Power has been down for Pete Alonso outside of home run derbies (120 wRC+, .198 ISO vs RHP this year), but a trip to Cincinnati might be just what he needs. His 137w RC+ over the last 30 days is eclipsed in this projected lineup only by J.D. Davis (310), who just returned from the IL and has a .378 wOBA against RHP since last year, and Brandon Nimmo (149), who is not hitting for a lot of power this year (.163 ISO vs RHP), but that hasn’t slowed down his overall production (140 wRC+ vs RHP). Along with the team they are opposing, the Mets are one of a handful of offenses atop the board around the 5.5 implied run mark that suggests there’s the potential for a lot of runs to be scored in Cincinnati tonight.

Small and Large Sample Decisions to be Made Tonight

There are no fewer than six starters who have made fewer than three starts on a 12 game slate tonight due to either injury or their rookie status, which means you’re making small sample size decisions on one-quarter of tonight’s pitchers. Some of those small sample numbers include a .440 xwOBA for RHBs against Tucker Davidson, a .365 wOBA and .446 xwOBA for RHBs against Braxton Garrett, a .516 wOBA and .442 xwOBA for LHBs against Alek Mantoah and a .345 xwOBA for LHBs against Vladimir Gutierrez. One pitcher who has struggled in a larger sample and pitches in a tough park is Matt Harvey. Sure, some of his recent problems may be BABIP related, but batters from either side of the plate have at least a .360 wOBA and xwOBA against him since last year. He went just three innings by design last time out, but that does little to discourage with a Baltimore bullpen with a 5.47 ERA over the last 30 days behind him. The Mets are the last of four teams to reach five implied runs tonight (5.02) and their middle of the order bats have been heating up. Pete Alonso (132 wRC+, .243 ISO vs RHP since 2020) blasted two home runs last night and Dominic Smith (130 wRC+, .218 ISO) leads the projected lineup with a 138 wRC+ over the last 30 days. Billy McKinney (88 wRC+, .204 ISO) may be the value bat here, he has an even 100 wRC+ since joining the team and has shown some surprising power.

The Ball Should Be Flying Out of This Park Tonight

Coors is not on the daily fantasy menu tonight, but considering weather conditions, some east coast parks could play like Coors tonight and the most enticing spot might be in Baltimore. The Mets and Orioles are both tied at eighth on the board with 4.75 implied runs, but in addition to a power friendly park under favorable hitting conditions, both southpaw starters in this game exceed a 20 HR/FB and 10% Barrels/BBE this year. There are only two LHBs projected in either lineup tonight (both for the Mets) and while RHBs have a .322 wOBA (.349 xwOBA) against David Peterson in his career, batters from either side exceed a .365 wOBA against Bruce Zimmermann. Under these conditions, if they’re in the lineup, they’re probably playable. Trey Mancini (179 wRC+, .319 ISO vs LHP this year), James McCann (197 wRC+, .310 ISO vs LHP since 2020) and Pete Alonso (94 wRC+, .214 ISO) are some of the top overall bats on the slate and great candidates for the Tuesday FanDuel Sportsbook Home Run Promo where available. The Orioles have an outrageous team 124 wRC+ vs LHP this year. The Mets do have a capable bullpen full of right-handed power arms, should Peterson get knocked out early again though.

A Bullpen You Might Not Have Known Was This Bad

It’s only a nine game slate, but all of the worst bullpens are in play and for the first time this year that doesn’t necessarily include the Tigers. When you add up ERA, SIERA, FIP and xFIP over the last 30 days and divide by four, the Tigers are still plenty bad (4.85), but there are several teams worse and four of them over five in action tonight. The worst bullpens over the last month have been the Rockies (5.23), Diamondbacks (5.22), Braves (5.22) and Angels (5.10). The Rockies may not be the ideal group to attack among the four because they are away from Coors, in a negative run environment in San Diego, have a competent starting pitcher on the mound (Jon Gray) and the opposing lineup is missing key bats. The Diamondbacks are facing the Dodgers in L.A., but this may not be the optimal spot either, as Madison Bumgarner has been on fire, it’s a negative run environment and the Dodgers, who are much better against RHP, are missing a few key bats as well.

That leaves us with the Braves and Angels. Atlanta is surely the surprise disappointment here and that may give daily fantasy players who realize this a bit of an edge. After all, the Mets are closer to the bottom of the board than the top at 3.64 implied runs. Max Fried is considered one of the Braves’ top starters, but he hasn’t been that this year. The Mets’ lineup is going to look ugly when released, but the majority of missing bats are left-handed. It should still contain Pete Alonso (126 wRC+, .308 ISO vs LHP since 2019), James McCann (146 wRC+, .208 ISO) and Kevin Pillar (111 wRC+, .223 ISO). You may want to beware McCann’s 25 wRC+ over the last month, but RHBs do have a .330 wOBA against Fried since 2019 and Atlanta is one of the more positive run environments in the league.

Patrick Sandoval makes his first start for the Angels. In 83.1 major league innings, he’s struck out 23% of batters with a 10 BB%, but an impressive 13.2 SwStr%. There’s some upside here and he only costs $5.2K on DraftKings, but with a high of 52 pitches and just 7.1 innings on the season, we can expect the pen to get involved early and this has become one of the more hitter friendly west coast parks in recent years. Jose Ramirez (139 wRC+, .257 ISO vs LHP since 2019) is the key here. As a switch hitter, he may get turned around after a couple of plate appearances and most of the allure here is how friendly this park has become for LH power. Not as advantageous for Jordan Luplow, but he mashes LHP (167 wRC+, .337 ISO) and costs no more than $3.1K on either site. The Cleveland offense is smack in the middle of the board at 4.18 implied runs.

Top Slugger Looking to Rebound in a Strong Spot

Matt Moore pitched just 10 innings in 2019 before spending last year in Japan. Once a top three prospect along with a couple of guys named Trout and Harper, Moore has disappointed with just a 20.7 K% and 4.51 ERA in 894.2 major league innings. It’s been reported that he was occasionally hitting 95 mph in Japan, maintaining an average velocity around 93 mph with 98 strikeouts in 65 innings (2.65 ERA). That said, the Mets pounded LHP last year (115) and all they’ve done is add Francisco Lindor and James McCann to that lineup. Moore doesn’t have much of a split. Batters from the left side have a .334 wOBA against and .324 from the right side over his career. The entire projected Mets lineup is above a 100 wRC+ against RHP and Lindor is the only RHB below a .200 ISO. The park plays very generously to RH power. Of course, your top target is Pete Alonso (126 wRC+, .309 ISO career vs LHP), who absolutely stung the ball this spring as he looks to rebound from a sophomore slump.
