Hunter Pence (back) scratched Friday; Nick Solak replaces

Pence has been scratched from the Texas Rangers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Friday’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox due to lower back stiffness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Nick Solak, who will now handle the designated hitter duties and slot directly into Pence’s vacated fifth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Rangers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Dylan Cease on the road this evening.

Rangers have a 117 wRC+ vs LHP since the All Star break

Ross Detwiler has the lowest strikeout rate (14.4%) and highest HR/FB (31.8) on the board. As a result, his 7.33 FIP is more than a run and a half higher than the second worst pitcher tonight. He’s allowed 11% Barrels/BBE with a .386 xwOBA despite a 56.3 GB% that’s best on the board. Accepted wisdom for most the season has been that the Rangers are terrible vs LHP (91 wRC+, 26.1 K%). However, since the All Star break, their 117 wRC+ is ninth best in the majors against southpaws with just a 20.8 K%. The Rangers are expected to line up predominantly right-handed tonight and for good reason. Batters from that side of the plate own a .425 wOBA against Detwiler this year. Hunter Pence (150 wRC+, .326 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Danny Santana (114 wRC+, .255 ISO) are big reasons for Texas’s turn around against lefties. Delino DeShields (109 wRC+, .178 ISO) should be a FanDuel ($2.7K) bargain out of the leadoff spot. Both the Rangers and White Sox are tied at 5.25 implied runs, the fifth best mark on the board.

Walks Could Cause Trouble for Young Pitcher Tonight

Texas is middle-of-the-pack in implied run total tonight, which could actually make them a sneaky stack against left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez making his first major league start. It’s true, the Rangers rank 21st in wOBA and OPS against left-handers this season, and Joey Gallo remains out of the lineup on the Injured List. Hernandez could run into trouble, however, with his 17.0% walk rate at AA this season, and across AA and the majors Hernandez has walked 23 of the 113 right-handed hitters he has faced (20.4%). I’ll be targeting the right-handed power hitters in the Rangers lineup tonight (Elvis Andrus, Hunter Pence, and Asdrubal Cabrera) hoping those walks lead to a big inning.

Sneaky Stack

Texas should fly under the radar today, especially after getting shut out by the Blue Jays yesterday. The lefty Thomas Pannone will draw the spot start out of the bullpen. This season, Pannone is giving up a 49% fly ball rate and a 36% hard hit rate. Most of the power bats for the Rangers are left handed bats, but I can't see Pannone going deep into the game and they only have one other lefty in the bullpen. If they can get to him early I do like this spot for guys like Andrus, Odor, Pence, and Gallo.

Hunter Pence scratched Wednesday; Gorkys Hernandez replaces

Pence has been scratched from the San Francisco Giants original confirmed lineup and will not play in Wednesday's matchup with the Seattle Mariners due to an unspecified reason. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Gorkys Hernandez, who will play center field and slot into the eighth spot in the order, moving Gregor Blanco to left field and up one spot in the lineup to seventh. Other than that, the remainder of the Giants lineup stays intact as they face off against Felix Hernandez this evening.

Hunter Pence scratched Tuesday; Gorkys Hernandez replaces and will bat eighth

Pence has officially been scratched from the San Francisco Giants lineup for tonight's game against the Milwaukee Brewers due to an unspecified reason. He'll be replaced in the said lineup by Gorkys Hernandez, who will take over the right field duties and bat eighth. This lineup change will bump Kelby Tomlinson all the way up to the two-hole from his original position of eighth. However, the remainder of the Giants previously confirmed lineup does remain unchanged.

Several Giants present as potential top values per RotoGrinders Player Projections

Third Basemen in Colorado top the RotoGrinders Player Projections tonight with the San Diego First Baseman, Wil Myers (117 wRC+, .175 ISO vs LHP) sneaking into the third spot on FanDuel (12.36) in Texas against Martin Perez (RHBs .339 wOBA since 2015) before going back to Coors again. On DraftKings, sees both Brandon Belt (135 wRC+, .201 ISO vs RHP since 2015 vs human HR machine Bronso Arroyo) and Bryce Harper (169 wRC+, .288 ISO vs RHP since 2015 vs Dylan Bundy) crack the top five, though Nolan Arenado (113 wRC+, .250 ISO vs LHP since 2015 vs Hyun-Jin Ryu) is the only batter projected for more than 10 points. Belt (2.55 PT/$/K) also shows up as a potential top value for less than $4K on either site, along with teammates Joe Panik (2.33) and Buster Posey (2.32) on DK and Panik (3.75) with Hunter Pence (3.45) on FanDuel. Zack Greinke leads overall pitcher projections on either site, though value hunters may want to look at JC Ramirez (24.1 K%) for $7K or less on either site against a tough Detroit offense that does tend to strike out a bit (24.2% on the road, 22.5% vs RHP, 26.7% last seven days).

Pair of Astros (Springer & Correa) each have two HRs, 95+ mph aEV against Michael Pineda

Five batters have homered twice against the pitcher they are facing tonight. Two (Hunter Pence & Brandon Belt vs Bronson Arroyo) deal with such outdated information that Statcast has not recorded a single BBE for any of these matchups. Arroyo missed the previous two seasons, but don't worry, he's still giving up bombs (seven this year). A power suppressing park in San Francisco is the biggest concern, but no major league park can hold Arroyo when he's on. Pence does only have five extra-base hits in 45 PAs against Arroyo and has just a .119 ISO vs RHP since last year to go along with his -4 wRC+ overall over the last week. George Springer (96.9 mph aEV on five BBEs) and Carlos Correa (101.6 mph aEV on seven BBEs) have both manhandled Michael Pineda in the past, but the talented right-hander is finally putting it all together with a 3.12 to go along with his 27.5 K-BB% this year. Nolan Arenado has also homered twice against a pitcher who has missed each of the last two seasons, but both of those against Hyun-Jin Ryu came in a single game in LA a few weeks ago. Among batters with at least 10 Statcast recorded BBEs against tonight's pitcher (and there are just a handful), Jose Abreu has the highest aEV (93.8 mph, 10 BBEs) against Phil Hughes. He's without a HR and has just three extra-base hits and seven strikeouts in 29 career PAs in this matchup.

RH power could benefit from strong winds in Kansas City if they can escape rain threat

With cooler temperatures and the threat of rain in several spots (including one game already PPD), players have their work cut out in finding positive hitting conditions tonight. While domes in Toronto, Houston and Tampa Bay may seem like the safest bets tonight, temperatures are projected to be in the 70s in Cincinnati without the threat of rain or strong winds in any direction. Among the games Kevin has identified as rain threats this morning, Kansas City is otherwise looking at temperatures near 80 with winds blowing out to left at 15-25 mph, strong hitting conditions for RH power, if the game plays, though the Royals may not generate much of it against Madison Bumgarner. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence could benefit though. Be sure to watch for Kevin's evening update.

Robbie Ray had the fifth highest strikeout rate (28.1%) last year, but allowed a lot of hard contact

Robbie Ray's 28.1 K% last season was a top five mark among qualified pitchers last season, but he also had major issues with hard contact (36.6 Hard%, 90.7 mph aEV, 8.1 Barrels/BBE). The Giants struck out just 18.4% of the time against LHP, the lowest mark in the National League and Arizona may be the most hitter friendly park outside of Colorado. While that strikeout rate certainly plays on a four game slate, an alternative approach might be a San Francisco stack for the contrarian player. Gorkys Hernandez is off to a hot start and still comes at a bargain price. Buster Posey (143 wRC+, .178 ISO vs LHP in 2016) and Hunter Pence (122 wRC+, .239 ISO) are the obvious RHBs to include in any stack. However, Brandon Belt tied for the team lead in wRC+ (143) and was second with a .212 ISO vs LHP last year.
