Lucas Duda Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

With Odorizzi scratched, there is value and upside in Royals’ lineup vs. Smeltzer

Jake Odorizzi has been scratched and replaced with lefty Devin Smeltzer, creating some intriguing plays in the Royals’ lineup this afternoon. Smelter isn’t a terrible pitcher; he had 3.45 ERA / 4.87 xFIP in AAA this year and projects as a roughly 4.5 ERA guy by most projection systems in the Majors. Royals bats are priced down a bit here and they have some solid pop vs. LHP: Hunter Dozier (.415 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Cheslor Cuthbert (.364), Jorge Soler (.355), Whit Merrifield (.350), Lucas Duda (.314) and Alex Gordon (.312) are all solid options this afternoon. Royals’ right-handed bats are especially intriguing given the platoon advantage and massive park upgrade as Target Field is much friendlier to RHB than Kauffman. Jorge Soler has been on fire with a .478 xwOBA over the past 14 days and is just $4.1k on Draftkings. Cuthbert ($3.7k) and Gordon ($4k) are nice values on Draftkings as well, and you won’t have to break the bank for Merrifield ($4.5k) or Dozier ($4.4k) either. On Fanduel, Royals bats are affordable as well; all their hitters can be had for $3.6k or less. Royals hitters with also have the benefit of a hitter-friendly umpire in Jansen Visconti.

Overlooked Stack Against Low Strikeout Pitcher

How often do we see the Royals with a 5.6 implied run total? I fully expect them to be under-owned in a great spot against Jordan Zimmermann and his high hard hit / fly ball rate and lack of K ability. Cheap bats like Duda & Starling to go along with the main meat of their order reduce this stack's salary total enough where you can easily fit in Jacob deGrom at SP and expensive one-offs to round out a GPP lineup.

Value and upside in Royals’ lineup vs. struggling Aaron Sanchez

It’s been another disappointing year for former top prospect Aaron Sanchez, as he’s so far put up a 5.89 ERA / 5.27 xFIP / 5.45 SIERA with an 8.9% SwStr. Sanchez always does a good job keeping the ball on the ground (49.8% GB rate this year, 53.7% for his career) but simply doesn’t miss enough bats (17.6% K rate) while walking too many hitters (12.2% BB rate). He’s also allowed a .360 xwOBA with a 7.5% barrel rate this year. Over the past 30 days, Sanchez has been even worse with a 6.17 xFIP, 6.33 SIERA,-1.6% K-BB and .373 xwOBA allowed. The Royals have a decent lineup that has both cash plays at stack appeal for today’s slate. Hunter Dozier (.377 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Alex Gordon (.355), Jorge Soler (.355), Whit Merrifield (.335), Martin Maldonado (.331), Lucas Duda (.313) and Nicky Lopez (.235) are all in play. Lopez is batting 2nd and costs just $3.4k on Draftkings. Soler will bat 5th at just $4k; Duda and Maldonado are priced under $4k but will be towards the bottom of the order. Royals batters will also have the advantage of a very hitter-friendly umpire in Mark Carlson this afternoon. The Royals currently have a 4.37 total vs. the Blue Jays in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre Sunday.

Value in KCR Lineup

It has been increasingly tough to find value bats on Draftkings. With that said, there’s a few bats in the Royals lineup that stand out vs. Tyson Ross and the Tigers. Ross’s overall numbers as a pitcher aren’t bad, but he is much worse vs. LHB as he is a Fastball-Slider guy without an out pitch vs. lefties. Last year he allowed a .368 wOBA and 4.8% K-BB vs. LHB, a trend that has been consistent throughout his career. Alex Gordon stands out in the KCR lineup as a guy that can still provide some pop vs. RHP (.348 xwOBA last year) and is just $3.5k on Draftkings while hitting out of the 3 hole. Ryan O’hearn (.345 xwOBA) has proven capable in the big leagues in his young career, and comes with a cool $3.7k price tag out of the 5 spot. Lucas Duda ($3.9k) is further down in the order batting 7th but has hit RHP to the tune of a 130 wRC+ and .359 wOBA for his career.

Target the Power Bats

While James Shields got off to a surprisingly decent start to the year, we have started to see signs of regression since the All Star break, as home run James has returned. He has given up eight long balls over his last four starts and will always be prone to that. However, I don't expect as many people to pick on him tonight with him drawing a matchup against a relatively weak Royals lineup. I don't think you need to stack four or five hitters here, but taking a few shots on the power bats makes sense. Salvador Perez will be popular play on DK where you need a catcher, but he's your top overall choice as the only current member of the roster with an ISO over .200 for the season. Lucas Duda seems healthy again and homered last night, so he can be added to the mix, and I don't mind Merrifield at the top of the lineup. You can probably pass on everyone else.

This cheap first base option can still do some damage (.232 ISO vs RHP last calendar year)

Sam Gaviglio hasn't been terrible this year (22 K%, 4.02 SIERA, .341 xwOBA), but LHBs have a .358 wOBA against him this year, along with a .353 wOBA against him last year. The Kansas City lineup does not have a lot of competent left-handed hitters, but there might be a few values from that side of the plate. Alex Gordon (96 wRC+, .140 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is really cheap in the two spot. Lucas Duda (106 wRC+, .232 ISO) can still do some damage at a low price.

Hunter Dozier replaced Lucas Duda in the Royals lineup following rain delay

Duda is a late scratch from the Kansas City Royals original confirmed lineup and will not start in Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Hunter Dozier, who will play first base and slot directly into Duda's vacated sixth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Royals lineup will stay intact as they face off against left-hander Ryan Borucki at home this evening.

A Decent Hitter in a Trash Lineup

This Royals lineup is a lot like Dairy Queen. Most of it is trash, but they've got a few things that are actually decent (if any of you like anything but the Blizzards or Orange Julius at DQ then your dead to me). In any case, back to the point of this which is to say that Duda isn't that bad. Duda owns a very good .259 ISO and .361 wOBA vs. RHP and he draws a matchup vs. Ervin Santana. Santana has been trash this year in his limited work (over a 7 xFIP) and wasn't great last year either. He's facing Duda in a much better hitters ballpark than KC and the weather conditions should be favorable. Save some money and play Duda who should come in at low ownership considering the lack of desire for people to stack the Royals.

Two more walks than strikeouts over his last seven starts

Dylan Covey in Seattle two starts back 8.1 IP - 2 H - 0 R - 2 BB - 5 K. It was the first time in six starts that he failed to allow at least four runs. He followed that up with six runs, two HRs and two strikeouts against the Angels and still has two more walks (19) than strikeouts (17) over his last seven starts. The Royals have a virtually empty lineup and 4.32 run line that's tied for fourth best on the board tonight. Lucas Duda (105 wRC+, .229 ISO) is the first batter we see in the lineup above a 100 wRC+ or .180 ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year. Brett Phillips (127 wRC+, .188 ISO) and Raul Mondesi (117 wRC+, .160 ISO) are the other above average bats. They hit sixth and ninth. Considering that Covey has allowed batters from either side of the plate a wOBA above .350 and an xwOBA within two points of .375 in his career, Whit Merrifield (97 wRC+, .115 ISO) and Salvador Perez (75 wRC+, .178 ISO) may still have some value at the top of the lineup. The latter has a 195 wRC+ with three HRs over the last week. Ryan O'Hearn had just an 86 wRC+ and .159 ISO at AAA this season. So, of course he homered in his first major league game. He costs the minimum on FD ($3.1K on DK), batting seventh.

Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?

It has been a strange season for Dylan Covey. He was fantastic in May and early June despite underwhelming metrics, and the world has largely come crashing down since then. He has allowed four or more earned runs in six of his last seven starts, but the one outlier was an 8 1/3 inning shutout performance against the Mariners. Go figure. His only saving grace is his ability to get ground balls, but he has an 11% walk rate against lefties and is allowing hard contact at a 40% clip. I'll start with the lefty power here, which means Lucas Duda is a top selection... and not much else now that Mike Moustakas is gone. You can throw Alex Gordon in there as a risk/reward value play, especially if he keeps hitting 2nd, and the RH power is also viable as part of a GPP stack. We know Covey can implode at any time.
