Neil Walker Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Finding Some Salary Relief

Look, there's obviously nothing sexy about Neil Walker. However, he hits in the middle of the lineup for the Marlins and gets to face a pitcher that is often very inconsistent and wild in Vincent Velasquez. I don't expect Velasquez to pitch deep into the game, and Walker should get some RBI opportunities. Walker is very cheap on every DFS site and is a fine salary saver on a slate that requires it if you want to fit in some elite pitching and/or Boston bats.

Deep Diving for Value

This slate does not afford us the best opportunity to take advantage of many plays on the value train. Welcome aboard Neil Walker. While I do think that Kyle Wright will have a nice outing, I still think we can hand pick a few Miami bats. Walker is on the right side of the platoon split here and may have just enough pop to get one over the Wall that Freddie Freeman built in Atlanta. The price is affordable and the spot in the order is just Wright. (See what we did there?)

Jon Gray smash spot

Gray should be a very popular play on today’s slate, and rightfully so. Gray faces a Marlins lineup in Miami that will have just 3 lefties in the order. Gray had pretty drastic splits in 2018 (.282 xwOBA vs. RHB, .332 vs. LHB) and shouldn’t have a problem mowing down this weak Marlins lineup. Miami has just two batters who had an xwOBA vs. RHP above .315 last year (Neil Walker, Brian Anderson). Although they will run out a slightly different lineup this afternoon, the 2018 Marlins K% vs. RHP was worse than average at 23%. Owners of Gray will hope they get the 2018 1st half version (11.33 K/9, 3.05 FIP) as opposed to the 2nd half (7.15 K/9, 5.49 FIP). The Marlins have just a 3.21 implied total against Gray and the Rox this afternoon.

The Top Stack of the Night

There are all sorts of possibilities for production here, with the Yankees taking on the ghost of Francisco Liriano. Luke Voit is hitting .342 with a .969 OPS since joining the Yankees, and the Cardinals gave him away for a bag of peanuts. No, I'm not bitter about that at all. Until his price rises, he remains a fine value play against left-handed pitching. I would also find it very surprising if Giancarlo Stanton doesn't score some semblance of fantasy points tonight. Francisco Liriano has little to no command of his pitches these days, so it's very possible that Stanton just walks a ton in this game. However, there's tons of upside with his power, especially if Liriano misses location IN the strike zone. Stanton owns a .440 wOBA and .333 ISO agianst LHP this year and is an elite option on this shorter Thursday slate. You can add in the likes of Walker, Torres, Andujar, or pretty much anyone to a Yankees stack. When Liriano is bad, things tend to go south quickly.

Saving In A Great Spot

Along with the Dodgers and Red Sox, the Yankees join the fray as a team with endless upside at home against James Shields. Of course, play Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Hicks if you can, but Neil Walker gives us some very affordable exposure to the middle of this Yankees lineup. Against Shields, he has the patience to take a walk if Shields has his usual control issues to lefties, and with his lineup spot, he's also likely to get up with runners on base where his solid hard hit and line drive ability give him RBI upside. He also has the switch hitting edge when they get into this beatable bullpen.

Don't Throw Him The Cutter

I've respected what James Shields has been able to do this season, but I'm going to attack him in this spot tonight. He's a massive fly ball pitcher, and he's pitching in a very friendly hitters ballpark tonight. Neil Walker has moved up in the lineup for the Yankees, and he's in a great spot tonight. Walker has a .304 wOBA with a .366 xwOBA and a .131 ISO with a .209 xISO against right-handed pitching this season. His advanced stats look a lot better than his regular stats on the season. Shields throws his cutter about 24% of the time, and since 2016, Walker has a .433 wOBA with a .306 ISO against cutters.

2B Due for Positive Regression

Neil Walker is having a bit of a down season, but realistically he's not hitting the ball that bad. On the year, he owns just a .126 ISO and .311 wOBA while only striking out at a 20% clip, but He owns a very high CXwOBA of .423 which means when he's putting the ball in play, he's just getting unlucky. He draws a matchup in a hitters ballpark against Cashner who been less than spectacular this season vs. lefties, owns a horrible .364 wOBA and .234 ISO. This is just a clear under priced spot for a guy in a good matchup batting in the middle of a powerful lineup. Neil walker is one of the best ways to save money today.

Power Stack

The Yankees will be relatively chalky for a 15-game slate but I can't help myself when it comes to stacking against Andrew Cashner. Cashner has frustrated more often than not this season but the signs are still there as him being a pitcher you want to stack against (4.92 SIERA, 6.9 SwStr%, 13.9% HR/FB). Unfortunately the Yankees don't offer you much speed in what's a good stolen base matchup but they still project to hit the most HRs on the slate. Despite a poor season thus far, Greg Bird is a guy I like targeting as a one-off as he should see single digit ownership but gives you power upside and should see plenty of run producing opportunities.

Jakob Junis has allowed nine HRs in four home starts

Jakob Junis can miss bats at around a league average rate and is one of few pitchers averaging six innings or more per start this year on today's board, but he's also an extreme fly ball pitcher, who's a bit home run prone (11 allowed in eight starts), facing the Yankees tonight. While Kansas City does suppress power, it is a positive overall run environment and nine of his 11 home runs have been surrendered at home. While his career wOBA against LHBs is 23 points higher than RHBs, xwOBA spies it the opposite way, favoring RHBs (.355) by 27 points. Aaron Hicks (98 wRC+, .190 ISO) is the only batter in the lineup below a 112 wRC+ against RHP over the last calendar year. He's joined by just Brett Gardner (.156 ISO) and Neil Walker (.161 ISO) below a .212 ISO. The damage the middle of this order can do does not need to be further spelled out.

Kendall Graveman brings his .393 xwOBA back to the majors to face the Yankees

Kendall Graveman got good and bad news this morning. He's coming back to the majors, but he's also facing the Yankees. Their 5.63 implied run line is only behind the Rockies at Coors tonight, which essentially makes them first considering the lack of production from that lineup this year. Graveman has a 53.1 GB% and 7.1 SwStr%, which is essentially what his career has been. His .393 xwOBA is tied for third worst on the board. Batters from either side exceed a .340 xwOBA against him since last year with right-handed batters more potent (.376 xwOBA), despite a ground ball rate over 13 points higher. The good news for Graveman is that Gary Sanchez is out of the lineup tonight. This perhaps also makes Yankee stacks more affordable. Aaron Judge (179 wRC+, .333 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Giancarlo Stanton (137 wRC+, .307 ISO), Neil Walker (127 wRC+, .183 ISO) and Gleyber Torres (152 wRC+, .200 ISO) all have a 175 or better wRC+ over the last week. Judge, Stanton, Brett Gardner (111 wRC+, .158 ISO) and Aaron Hicks (99 wRC+, .177 ISO) all have a 50+ Hard% over the last week as well. Didi Gregorius (132 wRC+, .264 ISO) is one of few struggling bats in this lineup right now (-94 wRC+ last seven days).
