Abraham Ancer Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Abraham Ancer is no longer in this week's Valero Texas Open field
Abraham Ancer will not play in this week's Valero Texas Open. This is a pretty big piece of news for a Wednesday night. Ancer will be replaced by Scott Gutschewski. There is no news of injury tied to his choice to take the week off, but the timing of the move does leave some questions to be answered in regards to his health for next week's Masters. Ownership projections will be updated shortly to reflect the impact of this late week news.
Chalk Doesn't Always Have to Taste Bad
Ancer has quietly made 15 straight cuts on the PGA Tour, which is the third longest streak behind Patrick Cantlay (19) and Rory McIlroy (16). He’s always had the ability to get red-hot with his ball striking, but his consistency has really improved this season. In this field, he’s 17th in strokes gained off the tee and 27th in strokes gained on approach. He’s a good putter on bentgrass (32nd in this field) and he clearly rates out well in my hole yardage statistic. In his first and only appearance at TPC Boston, he finished in a tie for seventh. Good form, good course fit, good course history, and a cheap price point. He should be popular this week, but we can look to differentiate our lineups elsewhere.
Lanto Griffin is no longer in the field
In what has already been a busy Monday of player movement, Lanto Griffin becomes the latest player to take a pass on this week's Wyndham Championship. Vaughan Talor and Abraham Ancer also withdrew earlier on Monday. Ben Martin, Peter Uihlein, and Josh Teater have all be added to the field and will get projections once they are added to the pricing pool. Taylor is the only player with a known injury ( ribs).
Super Affordable Price Tag
Ancer has been one of the more unheralded success stories of 2020, as he has come seemingly out of nowhere to become a consistent force on the PGA Tour. His approach play has been dialed in, and he has also been playing well off the tee. Following a disastrous second round in Memphis, Ancer shot 65-66 on the weekend to climb from the back of the pack all the way up to 15th place. He has four top 15 finishes in five starts since the Tour started back up, and he’s a fantastic mid-range option this week.
Lot to Like about this Texas Resident
Ancer is a good ball striker, although I think he gets a little too much credit in this regard. In fact, he’s only gained more than four strokes ball striking in four of his last 24 events on tour. I’m not sure why I’m saying something negative when I like him as a play this week, but I did find those numbers a tad surprising. Anyway, Ancer lives in Texas and played in one of the events Scheffler played in during the break. He was in solid form before the break and has made the cut here each of the last two years.
Steady Striker with a Price Dip
The San Antonio resident has slowed his pace recently but there is still plenty of pop in the bat. Ancer did just fine in his course debut last year (T42) but it was just one bad round that prevented him from collecting a top 25. Driving stats tend to lead to more cuts made, Ancer ranks 6th in this field in total strokes gained off-the-tee over the last 3 months. That has been the staple of his game since his surge up the world rankings begain in 2018. A little Texas home cooking should help him bounce back into contention and I don’t think his ownership will be all that high. A great sub-10% option with top-10 upside this week.
Bentgrass Fever
I will keep going back to this quote from him last year at TPC Potomac, “I love bent greens and these ones are really good and they roll real true, so just sticking to the process.” We have bentgrass greens on hand this week which gives Ancer a slight bump. Looking at his long-term performance, his Bentgrass performance is more than half a shot better per round compared to his baseline. I will continue to toss some shares on him on bentgrass, until that split corrects itself. There is no way he remains THAT much better on bentgrass as the sample increases, but it’s obvious that he prefers the surface.
Abraham Ancer set to return to action this week
Last week's early withdrawal from The Safeway Open should keep the ownership numbers of Abraham Ancer down this week. With no apparent news regarding his injury, it appears that Ancer is ready to return to action this week. With a commitment to play in the Australian Open announced last week one would assume Ancer's absence last week to be more precautionary than anything else. Prior to the news of his injury, Ancer finished the 2018 season on a very strong note. With three top 10 finishes in his last 8 starts, Ancer is a golfer worth taking notice of as a player trending in the right direction. Playing in his first CIMB Classic Ancer has a great opportunity to jump-start his 2019 PGA Tour campaign in this limited field event. Motivated to keep his card for the second straight year, events like The CIMB Classic are very important to Ancer at this point in his career. Currently projected at a very low ownership number, the addition of Ancer to your roster builds offers both uniqueness and a potential of upside for the CIMB Classic.
One hour and fifteen minutes to roster lock and no major news to report
With a little over an hour until roster lock, it’s quiet on the news front this morning. Outside of the Abraham Ancer withdrawal from earlier in the week, there is no news to report ahead of the first round. Good luck this week grinders, as always if any late news breaks we will provide the updates needed. Golf ownership numbers will be up and running within five minutes of roster lock. Make sure to check out Results DB to see how your percentages stack up vs the field.
Abraham Ancer has withdrawn from The Safeway Open
Abraham Ancer has withdrawn from The Safeway Open with a hand injury. Ancer has been replaced in the field by Robert Garrigus. This is an unfortunate start to the season for Ancer as he really played well over the last few months.
