Albert Almora Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Nick Castellanos (groin) scratched Friday; Albert Almora Jr. replaces

Castellanos has been scratched from the Chicago Cubs original confirmed lineup and will not start in Friday matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals due to right groin tightness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Albert Almora Jr., who will now play center field and slot into the eighth spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Cubs batting order but, most notably, bumps Ben Zobrist and Kyle Schwarber up to second and third, respectively. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Chicago faces off against right-hander Dakota Hudson on the road this evening.

Gio Gonzalez has 18.5% BB rate and 6.52 SIERA over past 30 days

Gonzalez’s horrific BB% and SIERA are by far the worst of any starter today (min. 20 IP). In his last start, Gonzalez made it through just 3 innings, walking 4 batters (30.8% BB Rate) and posting just a 14.3% (!!) zone%. Something seems very off with Gonzalez, and he won’t have much room for error tonight facing a good Cubs lineup in hitter-friendly Miller Park. Since Gonzalez doesn’t project to pitch very deep into this game, it’s worth pointing out that the Brewers’ bullpen has allowed a 9th-worst .329 xwOBA over the past month, as well as a 4th-worst 5.16 xFIP. Nick Castellanos (.420 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Kris Bryant (.410), Willson Contreras (.366), Javier Baez (.364), Anthony Rizzo (.350) and Albert Almora Jr. (.287) are all good options in the Cubs’ projected order. On Draftkings, only Rizzo will cost greater than $5k. Ben Zobrist has struggled in limited playing time this year (78 wRC+ in 112 PA) but is projected to leadoff at just $3.8k on DK. Albert Almora has also struggled this year, but has a respectable .314 xwOBA in his career vs. LHP and costs just $3.3k on DK. The Cubs currently have a 4.99 implied total that they could easily surpass tonight.

Cheap Leadoff Hitter In Prime Spot

I don't love the idea of trying to pick on Carlos Rodon, who I do consider a good pitcher and respect, but Albert Almora will likely bat leadoff against Rodon in a fantastic hitter's ballpark. Almora takes a .304 batting average and .766 OPS against lefties into Chicago, and the Cubs have one of the higher implied team totals on today's slate. Rodon has been stellar this season, however, allowing just nine home runs to right-handed batters all year through 117.1 innings. If you want cheap exposure to the Cubs, getting it through Almora makes a lot of sense.

Tommy La Stella (back) scratched Sunday; Albert Almora replaces

La Stella has been scratched from the Cubs original confirmed lineup and will not start in Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds due to lower back stiffness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Albert Almora, who will play center field and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which bumps Ian Happ all the way up to the two-hole and David Bote all the way up to the sixth spot, respectively. It goes without saying that there have been some noteworthy changes to this Cubs order, so be sure to check out the updated lineup on the Starting Lineups page as they face off against right-hander Luis Castillo at home this afternoon.

A Struggling Offense With Affordable Prices and a Juicy Matchup

There isn't a ton of obvious value on this slate tonight, so I'll lump the Cubs' value bats together as top plays and/or as a sneaky GPP stack. This team is going to break out at some point, as they have scoerd exactly one run in five straight games. That has the prices down on their hitters, and they face a consistently inconsistent lefty in Francisco Liriano, who simply can't throw strikes on a regular basis. David Bote, Albert Almora, and Willson Contreras are all dirt cheap, making the Cubs an intriguing GPP stack tonight that will also allow you to spend up in other spots of your lineup. All three of these value bats have wOBA marks over .355 against LHP this year, and of course you could also add Javier Baez if you are looking to spend up a little more.

The Chalk Value Emerges

With the Cubs resting Anthony Rizzo today, three of their top 4 hitters provide excellent value on a slate where their opening Vegas line was above seven (7!) runs thanks to strong winds blowing out at Wrigley. Albert Almora, David Bote, and Addison Russel are all 2.6 K or less on FanDuel and 3.8 K or less on DraftKings. They each make great value plays at the top of a lineup that should turn over early and often, and should be expected to carry a lot of ownership thanks to the Cubs' eye-popping Vegas total.

Cheap top of the lineup bats for the afternoon slate

Some of the top overall bats may even be top values this afternoon, but there are several cheap or affordable bats near the top of some lineups today that should be of interest. All of the following hitters cost less than $4K on DraftKings. Rosell Herrera (91 wRC+, .065 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) costs just $3K in the second spot for the Royals against Matt Boyd (RHBs .334 wOBA since last season). On the other side, Danny Duffy has been better, but RHBs also still have a .334 wOBA against him since last year as well. Jeimer Candelario (127 wRC+, .195 ISO vs LHP) bats second. Ketel Marte (127 wRC+, .230 ISO vs LHP) also bats second against Jon Lester (RHBs .326 wOBA). Steven Souza Jr. (140 wRC+, .178 ISO vs LHP) bats fifth, but is still certainly interesting for less than $4K. Lester is not a pitcher players normally want to attack, but when the price is right, it is worth considering. Ketel and Souza Jr. are both below $3K on FanDuel as well as is Albert Almora Jr. (110 wRC+, .101 ISO vs LHP) across the field, who bats second against Robbie Ray (RHBs .310 wOBA, but 41.2 Hard% since 2017). Adam Eaton (149 wRC+, .122 ISO vs RHP) leads off for the Nationals against Freddy Peralta (LHBs .299 wOBA, 35 Hard%) for less than $3K as well.

Cubs will attack Francisco Liriano with an entirely right-handed lineup with a potent middle

The Cubs currently have the top run line on the board this afternoon (5.56) against Francisco Liriano. This is probably not the lineup daily fantasy players were expecting, but it's entirely right-handed against a pitcher who has surrendered a .359 wOBA (.377 xwOBA) to batters from that side since last season and Kevin's forecast calls for "hot and humid, winds blowing gently out to left". There are still some sweet spots here beginning in the leadoff spot with Albert Almora (117 wRC+, .123 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) for just $2.6K on FanDuel. The middle of the order, three though five, all have at least a 130 wRC+ against RHP over the last calendar year with an ISO above .200. Players probably already had high expectations from Javier Baez (134 wRC+, .258 ISO) and WIllson Contreras (157 wRC+, .257 ISO) here, but Addison Russell (130 wRC+, .207 ISO) in the cleanup spot is a bit of a surprise.

Cubs send four above a 130 wRC+, .230 ISO vs RHP last calendar year against Brandon McCarthy (14 ER last 8.1 IP)

The Chicago Cubs have a second best 4.82 implied run line against Brandon McCarthy, who has allowed 14 ERs over his last 8.1 innings and has exceeded 5.1 innings just once this year. His 6.1 SwStr% and .361 xwOBA are both worst on the board. Since last season (just over 280 batters faced from each side), RHBs have a .344 wOBA against him, while LHBs are at just .304, though xwOBA tightens the gap to .323 and .309. Stack you Cubbies, weather permitting. Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber each exceed a 130 wRC+ and .230 ISO against RHP over the last calendar year, while Javier Baez (101 wRC+, .216 ISO) and Ian Happ (106 wRC+, .255 ISO) have flashes significant power as well. Contreras (377), Albert Almora (233), Bryant (211), Rizzo (211) and Addison Russell all top a 200 wRC+ over the last week as well.

Crash Hard

Jarlin Garcia is going to crash, and crash hard. The young lefty has posted a 1.09 ERA through 33 IP to start the 2018 season but his peripheral stats indicate that sort of success is far from sustainable. Garcia has a 4.73 SIERA and despite an elite ERA he really has not done anything well this season - he has a below average strikeout rate, an above average walk rate, and a very lucky .151 BABIP. Garcia also has the biggest gap in the League between wOBA (.204) and xWOBA (.378). Cub hitters won't get the benefit of Wrigley wind on Monday night but are poised to tee off against the over-performing Marlins lefty.
