Power play weapon for Blues is a nice mid-range option
Steen has not been the same producer like we have seen in years past, but he is still seeing consistent ice time and has a role on the team's top power play. With most gravitating toward the Blues' top line of Vladimir Tarasenko, Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz, Steen makes for a worthy contrarian option, and or compliment to some of the aforementioned forwards. In two meetings against their bitter rivals this season, Steen has a goal and an assist. Additionally, last season against the Blackhawks, Steen picked up a goal and four assists in five contests. While he is priced accordingly, Alex emerges as an attractive mid-range option at wing.
Without Tarasenko, the Blues top line will have to step it up
Vladimir Tarasenko is expected to miss tonight's game, so the top line is expected to be Brayden Schenn, Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Streen. This is still a very stackable line, especially against a Boston Bruins team that is decimated with injuries. It is unclear who exactly will still be out tonight, but they are definitely playing hurt. The Blues have been stumbling over the last month or so, but they have certainly been scoring as of late. Over their last five games, the Blues have put up 21 goals and I expect this top line to be all over Boston tonight. Rask has allowed four or more goals in six of his last 10 games so even though he's picking up the wins, his numbers have been bad recently (3.28 goals against average and .886 save percentage). These three play on the top power play unit together which gives them elite upside tonight.
Veteran winger fresh off multi-point outing for playoff hungry Blues
Last time out, Alex Steen logged his most ice time since November 2nd as he picked up a goal and an assist on four shots as the St. Louis Blues kept their playoff hopes alive, winning for the second time in as many nights in overtime. Back on home ice, the Blues should give it their all against the Bruins. Boston is a tough matchup, but with Vladimir Tarasenko doubtful for tonight, Steen is sure to get 20-plus minutes once again on the team's top line with Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz. Steen is affordable across the industry (FanDuel - $5,300, DraftKings - $4,700) and makes for an interesting tournament target as part of a line stack. Count on a solid outing from the veteran.
Pick On This Team's Bad Peripheral Stats
If you're looking to pick on a struggling team on the road tonight, consider taking the top line of the Blues, which features Vladimir Tarasenko, Paul Stastny, and Alex Steen. Despite their recent struggles, Tarasenko has quietly put together another fantastic offensive season for the Blues. A matchup against a stingy Sharks team may seem risky, but San Jose has played well over their heads since the start of the the new year; entering tonight's game allowing the second most shot attempts and own the fourth worst adjusted xGA/60 since January 1st. With home ice advantage on their side, look for head coach Mike Yeo to get his most talented sniper in prime offensive zone faceoffs and matched up against one of the weaker lines of San Jose throughout tonight's contest.
Roll out this cheap St. Louis forward in all formats
After scoring a single goal as a result of an incredibly unlucky 2.6% shooting percentage in December, Blues' veteran forward Alex Steen has been on a barrage in January as #20 has collected four goals and two assists in seven contests. Steen and St. Louis draw the best matchup in all of hockey against the road-weary Arizona Coyotes who have allowed 3.48 goals per game on the road. Steen is not skating on the top line with Vladimir Tarasenko, but he is on a formidable second line with Brayden Schenn. Additionally, Steen is on the team's top power play unit which should be licking their chops to take on one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League. Steen is affordable across the industry and makes an excellent play in all formats.
Veteran St. Louis winger heating up
Alexander Steen battled injury to start the season, but he is finally starting to settle in as he has found two goals and four assists in his last six games. While the Blues' top line, particularly Vladimir Tarasenko, is recommended in cash games, spreading exposure across the Blues' top six makes sense too, especially in cash games. Steen has nine points in 11 home games and is a big threat on a lethal St. Louis top power play unit. The Ducks can't do anything right at the moment, and it is hard to see them containing the explosive Blues tonight. Steen's price is more than reasonable and offers some differentiation from the top line.
Underpriced veteran tallied four points in last game
After going pointless in three games, veteran Alexander Steen exploded against Calgary, tallying a goal and three helpers for a massive outing. His price did not budge. Carolina is not the most ideal team to target, but they did play last night and had issues containing Toronto. Steen does not skate with Vladimir Tarasenko at even-strength, but he does see sufficient time on the team's top power play unit. Carolina can do a decent job containing an opposing team's top line, so it is quite possible Steen can have another big game, and at just $5,200 on FanDuel on DraftKings, he is worth a spot in your lineups.
Veteran winger looks for first points of season
Steen may not be skating on the top line with Vladimir Tarasenko, but he is still on the top power play. Priced down across the industry (FanDuel - $5,200, DraftKings - $4,800 and FantasyDraft - $9,800), Steen checks in as an excellent source of salary relief for this short slate. Steen has yet to find the scoresheet in three games, but he has tallied four consecutive 50-plus point campaigns for the St. Louis Blues. The Blues' power play should find some success against a tired Calgary team coming off a big come-from-behind victory over the Nashville Predators last night. Save some salary with Steen.
