Anirban Lahiri gaining steam as a value play
The dynamics of a limited field/ no cut event often leads to risky roster construction builds than in a normal week. The desire to fit in at least one top named golfer into a build magnifies the need to find value. With poor current form, a player like Anirban Lahiri could get overlooked on a normal week. Luckily for us, this is not a normal week, and Lahiri is starting to make sense as a value play despite his poor current form. This international player has a wonderful track record in Asia and more specifically at this course. With multiple top 20 or better finishes in various tournaments at this venue, Lahiri is starting to gain steam as a great value option for the week. Up almost 6% in ownership projections over the last 24 hours Lahiri could end up being one of the chunkiest value plays on the week. Looking for his third straight top 10 at this event, Lahiri is in need of a good week and certainly appears capable of playing the golf needed to snap out of his funk.
GPP Upside
It’s scary to support Lahiri this week if you look at his current form but there is more to the story. Lahiri has a long history playing here at TPC Kuala Lumpur. He bagged a top 10 at the 2014 Malaysian Maybank and returned the following year to win the event. He’s also gone T21-T3-T10 over his last three appearances at the CIMB. On top of those top 10s here, he also posted a top 5 at THE CJ CUP last year. Lahiri grew up in Asia and played plenty plenty of golf around these parts. There is definitely a comfort factor when he comes back to Asia. Given his form, I would restrict this to GPPs only, but I like his chances to potentially pop this week and toss his name into the mix.
Using course history to find value
Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club will play host to the CIMB Classic for the fifth straight year. Kuala Lumpur is a very popular course that has served as a venue for multiple professional golf tournaments. The European Tour's Maybank Malaysian Open has used Kuala Lumpur as it's host course on several different occasions. The 2015 Maybank Malaysian Open Champion Anirban Lahiri, entered the final round of last year's CIMB classic with a four-shot lead over eventual winner Justin Thomas. With a win and two top ten finishes in his last three tournaments at Kuala Lumpur, this 18-time winner in professional golf looks to be a great value play for this week's CIMB Classic. At $5,600 on FanDuel Lahiri offers a great chance to grab an high upside value play for both tournaments and cash games.
