Arizona Cardinals Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Cardinals Without Starting RT Justin Murray Tonight
The Cardinals will be without starting right tackle Justin Murray tonight. Justin Pugh will move from guard to tackle, a position he last played in 2017 with the Giants. It will be a tough task for the restructured o-line to slow down a dominate 49ers' defense. The fact that all three active RBs have been with the team for less than 2 weeks could also present issues in blitz pickups.
The Cardinals Activate CB Patrick Peterson to the 53-Man Roster
Star cornerback Patrick Peterson will finally make his season debut in New York tomorrow. The Cardinals' defense has been atrocious in 2019, but Peterson will provide a significant boost in pass coverage. Peterson historically does not shadow in the slot, meaning Darius Slayton and Cody Latimer will likely see a lot more of Peterson than Golden Tate, who has run about 80% of his snaps out of the slot. It will be interesting to see if Peterson funnels more targets to Tate and stud tight end Evan Engram.
Cardinals S Tyvon Branch has torn ACL
It's a big blow for this defense and should make the Cardinals a more fantasy-friendly matchup for tight ends the rest of the season. Branch earned PFF's fifth-best cover grade among safeties and limited pass-catchers to 0.4 yards per cover snap. He was injured on Jimmy Graham's first score last night and the tight end finished with a 6/27/2 line. They'll take on C.J. Fiedorowicz and the Texans in Week 11.
C.J. Beathard expected to start Week 9
He's going to lose the job to Jimmy Garoppolo soon but the newcomer is expected to be ready to start this weekend. Beathard hasn't been good across the past three games. He's posted a 22.5 QBR and despite throwing at least 36 times in each game, he's only averaged 215.7 yards per game with two total touchdowns to three interceptions. San Francisco's line is very banged up and they've already allowed the fifth-most pressures this season (107, per PFF). Last week, Beathard was under pressure on a ridiculous 60% of his throws. Although the Cardinals, their Week 9 opponent, only ranks 29th in adjusted sack rate (per PFF), they could still find success against this 49ers unit. If Pierre Garcon (neck) plays, he'll likely be shadowed by Patrick Peterson, limiting his upside in fantasy and what he can do for Beathard. As a team, the Cardinals are 11th in pass DVOA.
Week 6 injury roundup
Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone on Sunday, potentially ending his season. That will put Brett Hundley under center going forward and he may be stuck behind a depleted line.RT Bryan Bulaga, LT David Bakhtiari, and LG Lane Taylor all got banged up on Sunday. It'll be a situation to follow heading into their matchup with the Saints in Week 7. New Orleans was able to exploit Detroit's poor line for five sacks and Matt Stafford threw three interceptions and lost a pair of fumbles. They held Stafford to a 48% completion rate as CBs Marshon Lattimore and Ken Crawley limited receivers to a 42% catch rate (although Crawley was charged with two touchdowns, per PFF). Hundley struggled against the Vikings, finishing with one touchdown to three interceptions. He'll be an obvious downgrade for the pass-catchers.
Jameis Winston will undergo an MRI on Monday after injuring his throwing shoulder on Sunday. He expects to play Week 7 against the Bills though. Winston had strung together three consecutive games with at least 324 passing yards but he'll have a tough test against a Bills defense that ranked fourth in pass DVOA (per FO) through five weeks and has limited quarterbacks to the second-lowest passer rating (66.5).
Golden Tate left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury. He was having a great outing, hauling in a 7/96/1 line before leaving. He'll have a bye in Week 7 to rehab the injury ahead of their meeting with the Steelers. He'll have a tougher matchup against Mike Hilton in the slot, who's allowing the fourth-lowest passer rating among inside corners (58.3).
Emmanuel Sanders and Trevor Siemian were injured against the Giants Sunday night. Sanders was carted off with an ankle injury and he'll have an MRI on Monday. It doesn't look like he'll be able to play in their Week 7 matchup against the Chargers, although Siemian should be able to play. He took a shot to his surgically-repaired, non-throwing shoulder but was able to return to the game. The QB should look for Demaryius Thomas a ton if Sanders is sidelined. The duo has pretty evenly combined for a 47.2% market share so far this season. Thomas turned 14 looks into a 10/133/0 line last night despite pairing up with Janoris Jenkins most of the night. Bennie Fowler also saw an uptick in targets, finishing with eight, although he only hauled in three for 21 scoreless yards.
Leonard Fournette tweaked his ankle against the Rams but he's expected to play in Week 7. He finished with another strong performance after jumping out of the gates with a 75-yard touchdown run (21 carries, 130 yards total). He continued to give way to Chris Ivory in the passing game often on Sunday. Ivory finished with ten targets and a team-high nine receptions to Fournette's two catches on two looks. That may impact his fantasy outlook against the Colts, who have limited RBs to the tenth-fewest rushing yards per game (79.8) while allowing the tenth-most receiving yards to the position (50.6). Even so, they haven't been as efficient against the run as those numbers may suggest, they ranked 21st in rush DVOA heading into Week 6 and 18th in adjusted line yards (4.17). Fournette has picked up 20+ touches in all but one game this season.
Breshad Perriman and Maxx Williams both suffered concussions in Week 6. With Maclin out, Perriman was expected to jump into a larger role but he didn't catch a single pass prior to his injury. Ben Watson ended up leading the team with eight targets but finished with just 28 yards. Mike Wallace only saw five passes and finished with a 3/30/0 line. The Ravens offense continues to be unappealing from a fantasy perspective and Perriman won't be a strong option even if Maclin misses more time. He now has four catches on 17 targets through six games.
Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson was questionable heading into Week 6 with a quad injury and he re-aggravted the issue on Sunday, forcing him from the game. He was able to shut down Mike Evans while he was out there. The Bucs receiver failed to haul in any of his four targets under Peterson's coverage - he went 3/4/95/1 elsewhere. Peterson should be able to play next weekend against the Rams but he'll likely show up on the injury report during the week.
Other notables:
Dolphins C Mike Pouncey has entered the concussion protocol; Steelers RT Marcus Gilbert re-aggravated a hamstring injury that's held him out since Week 2; 49ers DE Arik Armstead injured his hands against the Redskins; Texans LT Chris Clark left with a calf injury but he believes he'll be ready to return following the Texans bye week; Lions FS Glover Quin suffered a concussion against the Saints and will have a bye week to clear the protocol.
Cardinals LT D.J. Humphries (knee) not expected to play Week 5
Humphries reinjured his knee and coach Bruce Arians said there's a slight tear while adding he's hopeful his starting left tackle can return for Week 6. Arizona's offensive line continues to struggle without him. They're 22nd in adjusted line yards per carry (3.69, per FO) and 31st in pass-blocking efficiency (per PFF). They've allowed a ridiculous 83 pressures, by far the most in the league, placing Palmer under pressured on 42.3% of his dropbacks. They'll be challenged by the Eagles in Week 5, who have posted 11 sacks this season (11th) and rank fifth in adjusted line yards per carry (3.06).
Cardinals LB Markus Golden (knee) out for season
An MRI confirmed Golden suffered a torn ACL and he's done for the year. The linebacker was third with 12.5 sacks in 2016. Although he hadn't gotten to the quarterback yet this year, he was 17th among edged defenders with 16 pressures. His absence will be a downgrade for their pass rush. Kareem Martin will take over Golden's role; he's earned poor grades from PFF in every season he's played.
John Brown (quad) practiced Wednesday, G Alex Boone didn't participate
Brown was limited but his return to the practice field is a step in the right direction. Backup guard Boone may not be needed this week with Mike Iupati saying he'll play this Sunday. As a team, they're getting healthier. The Cardinals are hopeful starting tackle D.J. Humphries can play, which would return two starters to a struggling offensive line. LB Deone Bucannon got in a full practice and is trending in the right direction to make his season debut this Sunday. Bucannon was solid last season, piling up the sixth-most tackles among inside linebackers while posting the 10th-best yards per cover snap (0.75) among all linebackers, per PFF.
Cardinals hopeful LT D.J. Humphries and LG Mike Iupati can play Week 4
General manager Steve Keim is feeling optimistic about Humphries' and Iupati's health and believes they can return for the Cardinals this weekend after both players were inactive Monday night. He added backup LG Alex Boone is dealing with a pectoral strain and will have an MRI today. Arizona's offensive line has been one of the worst units in the NFL, allowing a league-high 61 pressures through three weeks, including eight sacks (second-most). Iupati played injured in Week 1 and got off to a poor start but he's been a pretty consistent performer his entire career. Humphries earned a solid 72 PFF grade last season as a 13-game starter. He'll be an upgrade from John Wetzel, who's scored an abysmal 35.5 pass block grade this year and currently leads all tackles with 20 pressures allowed (139 passing snaps).
J.J. Nelson (hamstring) and Jermaine Gresham (ribs) active Monday night, John Brown (quad), LG Mike Iupati (tricep), and LT D.J. Humphries (knee) inactive
With John Brown still out, Nelson will compete with Larry Fitzgerald and Jaron Brown for targets against the Cowboys. While Brown was sidelined for their Week 2 matchup with the Colts, Nelson broke out for 120 yards and a score. It was Jaron Brown who led the team in targets though; he received 11 to Nelson's 7. Although Jaron only finished with four receptions, his lack of efficiency is a little misleading as he was only tossed four catchable balls from Carson Palmer. Without John Brown and David Johnson, Jaron Brown and Nelson will continue to see an uptick in targets. In Week 3, the Cowboys allowed Trevor Siemian to throw four touchdown passes. Two were credited to Dallas' banged-up cornerback group. Across 17 targets towards Dallas' corners, Siemien racked up 13 completions for 151 yards. Anthony Brown is the top-graded CB on Dallas, currently ranking 11th in coverage among 105 qualifying corners (84.1), per PFF, but his score may be inflated due to his first game against a weak, Beckham-less Giants offense. He only allowed one reception for six yards in that contest but in Week 2, he was credited with a 7/62/1 line on ten targets. He'll see J.J. Nelson the most tonight. Jaron Brown will likely battle rookie Jourdan Lewis, who's only played 31 cover snaps in the NFL (all last week); Siemian was 3-for-4 for 22 yards and a touchdown against him.
