Austin Seferian-Jenkins Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Jaguars place Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Corey Grant on IR
The Jaguars have placed both Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Corey Grant on IR. Seferian-Jenkins is eligible and expected to return this season, but Grant is not. Niles Paul is in line to be the primary TE in the absence of ASJ, and TJ Yeldon is locked into a sure workload for week 6 with Grant on IR and Fournette already confirmed out.
TJ Yeldon and Austin Seferian-Jenkins not on final injury report, will play Sunday for Jags
TJ Yeldon will serve as the lead back for the Jags on Sunday in Fournette's absence, and ASJ will be the starter at TE. Look for Yeldon to get a heavy workload in both the run and pass game, and Bortles will likely be throwing more than usual as well due to Fournette being inactive.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ribs, foot) inactive Sunday
Seferian-Jenkins is inactive and won't suit up for today's game against the New York Jets after previously being listed as doubtful on the New York Jets' injury report with separate ribs and foot injuries. The Jets are massive 16.5-point road underdogs and possess just a 13.5 implied team point total with Bryce Petty and possibly Christian Hackenberg under center, making Robby Anderson and the remaining Jets offensive weapons fringe tournament options, at best.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins doubtful, and Matt Forte questionable
Even if both players somehow suit up and play this week, neither player should be considered in terms of DFS roster spot. The Jets should once again struggle with Bryce Petty under center and the team has a tough matchup against a Patriots team that should be motivated to play well and get a win. Forte has struggled to rush for more than 25 yards in a game since week 13, and his presence in the offense only takes snaps away from other appealing options in the backfield. Seferian-Jenkins is now doubtful for the season finale, thus making it that much harder for the Jets to score points with Petty as their quarterback. Seferian-Jenkins if healthy is always a threat to score points in the red zone, but with an implied team total of 13.5, the Jets are not expected to put up much of a fight against the Patriots in Week 17.
Matt Forte and Austin Seferian-Jenkins not at practice on Thursday
Even if both players somehow suit up and play this week, neither player should be considered in terms of DFS roster spot. The Jets should once again struggle with Bryce Petty under center and the team has a tough matchup against a Patriots team that should be motivated to play well and get a win.
After Some Tough Matchups, This TE is Set To Explode
ASJ has had a few tough matchups recently, but he finally draws one that makes him a worthy target this week. His price was in the mid $5K range on DK not too long ago, but now we can get him at a great price due to his lack of production in those tough matchups. He'll also be lower owned due to recency bias. ASJ faces a Broncos team that has allowed the third-most fantasy points to the TE position, which is unsurprising given how teams tend to funnel their targets away from the talented Broncos CBs. As a red-zone favorite of Josh McCown, don't be surprised if the big guy sees a TD or two this Sunday. I will have 15 to 20 percent of him in my lineups this week.
Jeremy Kerley warming up, expected to play Week 9
Kerley is expected to be suspended for violating an NFL policy but the punishment hasn't been handed down yet, meaning he'll play against the Bills tonight. He's averaging a lackluster 3.9 targets per game this season and hasn't seen more than four since Week 4, so he isn't an appealing fantasy option. Quarterback Josh McCown will likely continue to focus on Robby Anderson, who's coming off his best game of the season with a 6/104/1 line, but he has a tough matchup with PFF's seventh-ranked cover corner, Tre-Davious White. He'll continue to favor Austin Seferian-Jenkins as well and he has a great spot. The Bills are allowing the fifth-most receptions per game to tight ends. ASJ has only seen five targets the past two weeks but he saw eight and 11 in the two games prior and he's scored three times over those four games. McCown seems to trust him near the end zone and he's been very efficient as he's turned 3-of-4 targets inside the ten-yard line into touchdowns.
Bills S Jordan Poyer expects to play Week 9
Poyer (knee) and CB E.J. Gaines (hamstring) were both inactive Sunday. It looks like Poyer, PFF's third-ranked cover safety, will play Thursday night against the Jets which could hinder Robby Anderson's ability to make big plays. The Bills may be without Gaines though, who's now missed two days of practice. If he can't go, it would likely keep Shareece Wright on the outside. He allowed the seventh-most yards this past weekend (69) and if he had enough snaps to qualify, he would have the fourth-worst yards per cover snap (1.81 per PFF) and third-worst cover snaps per receptions (7.0) this season. He'll primarily battle Jermaine Kearse while Robby Anderson only runs 26% of his routes on the side Wright would be on. Anderson is coming off the best game of his season with 104 receiving yards and a touchdown. He's going to see a lot of Tre'Davious White, who's limited receivers to a 47% catch rate and earned the seventh-best cover grade from PFF. Anderson travels to the slot for 33% of his routes where he'll see Leonard Johnson, who's posted the third-worst cover snaps per reception rate (8.0) when inside. Given Poyer's presence and a tough matchup with White, Anderson may find more success running short and medium routes out of the slot. It's possible McCown picks on Wright by sending more targets towards Kearse but he hasn't passed his way more than five times over the past four weeks. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins could pick up a larger workload as well and the Bills have struggled to defend tight ends, ranking 19th in DVOA while allowing the ninth-most PPR points to the position. ASJ has seen five targets in back-to-back weeks but he hit 11 and eight in the two weeks prior and has scored three touchdowns over those four games. Jeremy Kerley is expected to be suspended which opens up a little over three targets per game for the other pass-catchers.
Tomy Brady and Rob Gronkowski returned to practice Thursday; both will play Sunday
Both players were present at practice yesterday but collected DNPs. On Thursday, they were there and they were considered limited participants. CB Eric Rowe was the only player sidelined today, it doesn't look like he'll return this weekend which will leave safety Patrick Chung to fill the slot corner role often. New England has used him all over the field. Out of Chung's 72 snaps in Week 5, he rolled up inside for 39, was an outside corner for nine, and was lined up as a linebacker for 13 (per PFF). He'll primarily be responsible for tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who's working his way into a featured role on the Jets offense. Last week, he racked up eight targets and turned them into a 6/29/1 line. Chung has earned the 23rd-best cover grade from PFF among safeties, presenting much a tougher challenge for ASJ than the Browns. Jonathan Jones will work inside as well - he took 23 snaps in the slot last week - and he should see Jeremy Kerley quite a bit. Although he's limited receivers to a 50% catch rate this season, he's allowed the fourth-most yards per cover snap in the slot (2.35, per PFF).
A New Look on Life has Done Wonders for this Tight End
Austin Seferian-Jenkins made a big change in his life last year. He sought help for some personal issues and ended up losing 30 pounds in preparation for this season. He is more mentally and physically prepared for football than he arguably ever has been in his career. He is off to a great start in his first three games with the Jets, catching 15 of his 18 targets for 106 yards and a touchdown. This week's game against the Patriots sets up perfectly for ASJ, as they will likely be playing from behind and be forced to air it out.
