Skjei Steps in to Favorable Power Play Spot
With Ryan McDonagh joining Kevin Shattenkirk on the shelf, Skjei is the next man up on the power play. Skjei has flashed some offensive skill in the past, and he actually has the best iCF/60 among Ranger defenders this year (10.3). While the 5v5 matchup for New York is difficult, things change on the power play. The Jets tend to play a bit undisciplined at times, and they struggle to suppress shot attempts and scoring chances on the penalty kill. It is also worth mentioning Connor Hellebuyck has been in a funk of late, with 17 goals allowed in his last six starts (includes one shutout). Skjei will not cost an arm and a leg, making him a nice little value play with some power play upside. He should carry low ownership in tournaments.
Injury to captain opens opportunity for young defenseman
Ryan McDonagh has been ruled out again for the New York Rangers which should open up more minutes for young Brady Skjei. Nothing about Brady Skjei screams 'play me', but he did find 39 points (5 goals, 34 assists) in 80 games during his rookie season. This season he has just eight in 23, but he is averaging well over two minutes more per game than last season. Skjei has picked up three assists in his last two games for a Ranger team that is 8-2 in November, and while Vancouver has been playing well, the Rangers are a very explosive offensive team. Brady will see time on the team's second power play unit and makes for an interesting tournament pivot from a likely popular Kevin Shattenkirk.
