Bryson DeChambeau returns to the site of his U.S. Amateur win
Bryson DeChambeau took to Instagram today as he returns to the site of perhaps his biggest win in the world of golf. DeChambeau won the 2015 U.S Amateur at Olympia Fields and will look to build on his past experiences for this week's BMW Championship. With a revamped game that now exploits his ability to hit the ball as far as possible, it will be interesting to see how DeChambeau plays this course in comparison to his first visit at Olympia Fields. DeChambeau will not be the only golfer in the field from the 2015 U.S Amateur. Other notable names in this week's field that played in the 2015 U.S. Amateur are also tagged in this post. Jon Rahm lost in the round of 16 narrowly missing out on a chance to win his first USGA event.
Five minutes to PGA roster lock and no major news to report
With just a few minutes to the first major of 2020 there is no news to report. The weather could be a factor in terms of affecting play, as winds could be strong on Thursday afternoon. ResultsDB will be up and running a few minutes after lock. Good luck this week Grinders!!!
Rising To The Top
Early ownership projections are interesting this week. Just two weeks ago, NOBODY in the DFS community could get enough of the buff, bombing, winning Bryson DeChambeau. Bryson is the buzz of golf right now. He won an event, took a week off, and now is barely the highest priced golfer on the board. Given those factors, you would expect him to easily be the highest owned golfer on the board. Not so fast. Our early projections have him behind the likes of Cantlay, Woods, McIlroy, Casey, and a few others. That is ridiculous. Remember, Bryson has posted finishes of 9th place or better in seven of his last eight events. That is elite stuff. He’s hitting the ball 350+ off the tee with regularity. He is going to continue to gain massive amounts of strokes off the tee as long as he does not get injured. Oh, and he also won here two years ago. As long as the ownership doesn’t spike, I’ll gladly be overweight (no pun intended) on DeChambeau in my GPP builds this week
Ready For A Win
It's coming. The win is coming. Bryson has finished 5th, 2nd, 4th, 3rd, 8th, and 6th in his last six PGA Tour starts. Yes, that's six straight top eight finishes; three before the COVID shutdown and three after the COVID shutdown. COVID could very well be the only thing capable of slowing DeChambeau down at this point. His all around game is solid, and the bombs that he is now hitting off the tee should give him a lot of confidence on the four par fives at Detroit Golf Club. Given the weaker field for this event, Bryson has been installed with massive 6-to-1 winning odds. Those odds are too short for me to love in the betting markets, but Bryson makes sense as a play in any DFS format. He's a very risky fade right now.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Buff Bryson Week
There are a million reasons to like Buff Bryson this week. We'll start with the fact that he's posted six straight top eight finishes on the PGA Tour. Since the restart, he's gained more strokes than any golfer and it's not particularly close. The crazy part is that the courses the last three weeks haven't exactly fit his new style of play. It's also crazy that it doesn't feel like everything is firing on all cylinders, yet he's still posting great finish after great finish. With a lack of superstars teeing it up this week, Bryson is the clear betting favorite at 7-to-1 and he's only $11,700 on DraftKings. He should be able to hit more drivers this week and take advantage of the four par fives. I can't wait to see him hit bombs on this course.
Bombs Away
It’s crazy how narratives can swing DFS ownership. Even though a bulked-up DeChambeau made waves at Colonial with his bombs off the tee, he wasn’t highly owned at Harbour Town because of the narrative that bombers can’t succeed there. Well, there’s more to Bryson’s game than just hitting bombs off the tee. He showed some finesse at Harbour Town when he needed it, ranking seventh in the field on strokes gained on approach and exiting with an eighth place finish. His game is really, really close to being elite, and a win isn’t too far away. Don’t be surprised if it comes at TPC River Highliands, where he has already posted back-to-back top ten finishes.
New Rule in PGA DFS -- Don't Fade Buff Bryson
I have yet to finalize my main lineup. If I end up going balanced, I will be overweight on DeChambeau and Rahm in MME. If I go with a stars and scrubs build, I will start my main lineup with one of those two. At the moment, I'm leaning Buff Bryson over Rahm. His five-event string of top five finishes came to an end last week, but he finished in a tie for eighth. In the first two events back from the break, he has gained 12.1 (Colonial) and 9.7 (Harbour Town) strokes on the field with his ball striking. The scary part is that he hasn't even hit many drivers on those tight tracks. He clearly likes TPC River Highlands, as he has progressively better finishes in each of the last four years -- T47, T26, T9, and T8.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2020 PLAYERS Champion
Bryson is one of the streakiest golfers in the world and he’s coming into this week in pretty amazing form. He finished fifth at the Genesis Invitational where he gained over 10 strokes tee to green, he nearly won the WGC-Mexico where he gained nearly nine strokes tee to green, and he back-doored a top five at the Arnold Palmer Invitational where he gained over nine strokes tee to green. Over those last three tournaments, he has gained more strokes off the tee than any golfer in the world (including Rory McIlroy). A lot of jokes were made about him bulking up to look like a gymnast, but the mad scientist is clearly on to something. Now that his irons are dialed in, it’s only a matter of time before he wins a big event. We shouldn’t forget last year when he reeled off seven straight top 20 finishes while racking up three wins in that short stretch. He’s going to be popular this week, but that’s not always a negative. I’m more concerned about the aggregate ownership of each lineup rather than the individual ownership of each golfer. In other words, you can play anyone you want in PGA DFS, you just have to be careful with who you pair them with if you are playing in GPPs.
Byrson DeChambeau provides plenty of upside at a discount
From a narrative standpoint, it could be hard to get behind a player like Bryson DeCambeau for the last event of the PGA Tour season. With the slow play issue still somewhat in the forefront, it will be interesting to see if DeCambeau can just focus on playing golf moving forward. DeCambeau is another golfer priced down due to his last place starting position. Gaining a sense of how we value golfers in this new format will be an interesting process. One of the things you can do this week is to look at the pricing difference between two players based upon their starting position. While DeChambeau is only two shots behind Brandt Snedeker, he is 1800 dollars cheaper in DK pricing. The difference in starting points from 16 to 26th is only five points. When you look at five points over the course of four rounds I think it really becomes easy to make up that scoring deficit. Since there is only a 3 shot difference between the golfers at the bottom and those outside the top six, you could make a case for tiring to handicap talent instead of just starting position alone. Still, a very talented golfer, DeChambeau as one of the cheapest golfers in this field making him a value play worth considering for the week.
