Veteran blue liner sees top power play minutes
The Vancouver Canucks trail only the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals in times short-handed this season. While Cam Fowler is nothing to write home about, his price is cheap and the power play matchup is worthy given the Canucks' propensity to take penalties. Fowler has flashed some upside this season, including a once-in-a-lifetime hat trick back in November. It's not pretty, but a two game slate and team limits dictate such routes.
This defenseman is in a solid matchup despite being on the road
Cam Fowler and the Anaheim Ducks are in Arizona to take on the Coyotes tonight. He plays on the top power play unit with some solid offensive players like Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Rickard Rakell. The Ducks have been generating a bunch of chances lately as they have a 61.73 CF/60 over their last 10 games which is the eighth best and are taking on a Coyotes team that has allowed a 64.96 CA/60 in the same time frame, which is the sixth worst. Fowler produces points and chips in with shots and blocks which gives him a decent floor and a solid ceiling.
Multi-Point Potential On The Blue Line
Despite being on the road, I plan to target the Anaheim Ducks offense heavily tonight in the Nations Capital. The Ottawa Senators are not only a lousy defensive team (ranking 31st in CA/60, 23rd in HDCA/60 and 26th in SCA/60), they are also terrible on the penalty kill, sitting 29th overall in the National Hockey League and 28th overall in the month of January. Cam Fowler logs huge minutes (averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game) for Anaheim in all situations, and he has registered multi-point games in two of his last three contests, and he has similar upside again tonight in this very favorable matchup.
Top Option on the Blue Line
The New York Rangers are not only a weak defensive team (31st in CA/60 and 29th in both HDCA/60 and SCA/60), they have also been taking too many trips to the sin-bin, which is never a good idea when you are struggling while short-handed (ranking 23rd overall on the penalty kill in the month of January). Considering that the Rangers are defensively challenged and suffering on special teams recently, Cam Fowler becomes one of the top defenseman to roster tonight on this 12-game slate. Fowler logs a ton of ice time for the Ducks in all situations (averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game), and he has multi-point upside tonight in this plus matchup on home ice.
Multi-Point Potential on the Blue Line
The Pittsburgh Penguins are not only the weakest defensive team on the slate (ranking 20th overall in the National Hockey League in SCA/60 and 25th in HDCA/60.), they are also one of the most undisciplined teams in the National Hockey League, taking the fourth-most minor penalties in 2017-18, opening the door for Anaheim Ducks offensive defenseman Cam Fowler. Logging over 24 minutes of ice time per game at both even strength and on the Ducks number one power play unit, Fowler is very likely to make his way onto the score sheet tonight, perhaps even multiples times.
"Shutdown" Line Role Reversal
After missing the most of the early season recovering from injury, Ryan Kesler is finally healthy and has been reunited with speedsters Jakob Silfverberg and Andrew Cogliano on Anaheim's second line. Not typically known for his offensive prowess, the gritty power forward Kesler has assumed a larger role in Anaheim's scoring attack over the past few seasons despite typically playing against the opposition's top scoring threats. Tonight will be a different story however, as Edmonton will likely deploy star forward Connor McDavid away from Kesler at even strength. This benefits Kesler and Anaheim's second line, who will likely take on Edmonton's second line which has struggled in their own zone this season. Also featured on Anaheim's top power play unit, Kesler and Silfverberg should get plenty of quality scoring chances on the man advantage against an Edmonton penalty kill that ranks dead last in the NHL this season.
Potentially Overlooked Mini Stack
Finally healthy after missing time due to injury, veteran playmaker Ryan Getzlaf has 20 points in 16 games played for the Ducks. Reunited on Anaheim's top line alongside goal scorer Rickard Rakell, Getzlaf and Rakell draw a sneaky good matchup against a banged up Vancouver team that is finally starting to show their true colors; entering tonight's game allowing close to 5 goals per game over their last 11 games. Undoubtedly the league's best passer, Getzlaf plays like he has eyes on the back of his head, using his tremendous awareness to set up prime scoring opportunities for his teammates. Also featured on Anaheim's top power play unit, Getzlaf and Rakell should have no problems paying off their manageable price tags against a Vancouver penalty kill that ranks 27th in the NHL this season.
Great Point-Per-Dollar Option On Defense
The Buffalo Sabres are another team we can attack this evening as they play on the tail end of a back-to-back, making this their third game in four nights. The Sabres have lost five straight contests, surrendering the second-most goals against per game along the way, and I expect the Anaheim Ducks to control this game from puck drop. The Ducks have struggled to score goals so far this season and it has been difficult to pin-point what line to target, so perhaps Cam Fowler is the best offensive option. Fowler never seems to leave the ice, logging heavy minutes (over 26 minutes of ice time per game) at both even strength and on the power play, providing him with ample opportunity to hit the score sheet on a nightly basis. With a moderate price tag and a plus matchup on deck, Fowler becomes one of the top offensive options from the blue line this evening.
Perhaps the top point-per-dollar play on defense tonight?
Like the New Jersey Devils and the Vegas Golden Knights, the Colorado Avalanche are another team playing over their heads to start the 2017-18 season. Despite their good start, the Avalanche still struggle with their puck possession game, and even though Semyon Varlamov is elite, he simply cant steal every game for the Avs. I think we see the Anaheim Ducks come into the Pepsi Center and dominate this game from puck drop tonight, with Cam Fowler leading their offensive attack. Fowler has been the Ducks best player this year, logging heavy minutes (over 26 minutes of ice time per game) at both even strength, and on the Ducks number one power play unit. Whether you are including him as part of a line stack or simply using him as a one off, the moderately priced Fowler makes a terrific play tonight on defense in any format.
Under-owned with high upside
With the potent offenses of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals all in play tonight, I think we see the power play quarterbacks for the Boston Bruins and the Anaheim Ducks fly under in the radar tonight in all formats. The Colorado Avalanche were an awful defensive team in 2016-17, leading the National Hockey League in goals against per game, while finishing dead last in the standings. The New York Islanders were also a mess in their own zone last year, ranking 29th in both CA/60 and SCA/60, while surrendering the eight-most goals against per game. Both Torey Krug and Cam Fowler have multi-point upside tonight in their plus matchups.
