Cameron Smith Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Punt Value In A No Cut Event

If you want to bank on improving form, Cameron Smith also stands out as a potential value here. He gained over five strokes combined on approach and around the greens last week, and that bodes well for success heading into Shadow Creek. He has quietly gone without a missed cut since June, and his last five events have resulted in no worse than a 38th place finish. While there is no cut this week, Smith’s lack of recent missed cuts show that he is trending well. He is also capable of making it rain with his flat stick if a birdie fest breaks out. I like the potential for him to get a top 20, which is really all you need at this salary.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is Cam Week

Smith could be featured in the conviction plays given what should be low ownership, but I like him enough to list him as a core play. As noted in the introduction, around the green and putting tends to be a major factor at this event. There are few better on and around the greens than Smith. Smith’s play has been erratic over the last year, but he was ranked in the top 25 in the world a couple years ago. He is finally starting to discover some form and his price has yet to reflect it. He has quietly made seven straight cuts and has top 25 finishes in three of his last four starts. He has gained strokes on approach in five straight events and has posted T10 and T13 finishes in his last two trips to TPC Summerlin.

Brendan Steele comes out of nowhere to contend for his 4th career PGA Tour win

Entering this week Brendan Steele had not posted a top ten in an individual tournament in some 23 months. Fast forward to Sunday morning and Steele is now in a position to claim his 4th career PGA Tour win. Riding an extremely hot putter, Steele has a 3 shot lead heading into the final round of this year's Sony Open. Priced at $7,800 for the round 4 showdown slate, it will be hard to get away from Steele in most formats. Due to the windy conditions this week, scores have not been overly low in comparison to years past, thus making finish points a bit more important than a normal week on tour. Both Steele and his nearest competitor Cameron Smith head into the final round in a tie for the most birdies through 3 rounds ( 17).

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Should the wind kick up here like it did a year ago, you can upgrade the Australian contingent of golfers a little more. Aussies all tend to play better in blustery conditions, and it’s certainly no coincidence that Leishman and Smith finished 2nd and 3rd in the inaugural edition. Smith ranked 33rd on the PGA Tour in par five scoring and 38th in scrambling a year ago, and he is one of the most under-rated golfers out there right now. He quietly posted four straight sub-70 rounds on the way to a top 25 finish last week, and there’s a ton of potential at what could be reasonable ownership this week.

Cameron Smith flying under the radar

Currently ranked in the 10th position in the FedEx Cup standings, 25-year-old Cameron Smith is having his best PGA Tour season to date. Back to back 3rd place finishes at the first two events of the playoff run have allowed Smith a great opportunity to play for a bunch of money this weekend. Value and low ownership are very hard items to come by this week, but Smith is a player that could potentially fill both of those things this week. Currently projected at a sub 10% ownership, Smith has proven he can play with the best players at this point in the season. Playing in his first every Tour Championship, Smith has an opportunity to be a difference maker in GPP roster builds for the last tournament of the 2018 season.

Weather update for The RBC Heritage

Kevin Roth's weather forecast for The RBC Heritage is now available to read in the main forum. According to Roth, we can expect a fairly mild week in terms of weather. During the first three days of the tournament, golfers will deal with warm temperatures and mild wind. Golfers who are lucky enough to make to Sunday could deal with a bit of rain. From the standpoint of determining a better tee time draw, the weather looks to once again play a very small part in our roster decisions. While Roth expects winds to potentially gust 5mph more on Friday afternoon, there is no real concern to fade one tee time wave over another as any edge gained would be very small. As always we will keep an eye on the weather up until lock providing any updates as needed. For now, the weather appears to be a very small factor in roster building this week.

Don't Sleep on the Rising Star

The talent is there. The form is there. The fit for the course is there. Cameron Smith is turning into one of the best young players on the PGA Tour, and he is fresh off a tidy top five finish at Augusta a week ago. He has made the cut and finished inside the top 30 in both his appearances at this event, so there's literally nothing to dislike about him. He doesn't rely on extreme distance off the tee, so this course does cater to his elite skill set. He's a great scrambler as well, as he ranks 11th on the PGA Tour in that department so far this season. I expect him to be one of the more popular golfers in the field, but I will still have exposure to him in all formats.

Weather update for The Farmers Insurance Open

RotoGrinders own Chief Meteorologist Kevin Roth has a weather report up for the Farmers Insurance Open in the main forum. While Roth predicts the wind could be in play this week and most notably on Friday afternoon there should not be too much of an edge gained by favoring one wave over another. Overall the weather in San Diego should be fairly consistent with Friday's wind gust only predicted to reach 15mph.

Wells Fargo Championship WD Alert: Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith, Jonas Blixt, and Bud Cauley all withdrew

No injuries were cited regarding any of the four withdrawals. Cameron Smith and Jonas Blixt partnered and won the Zurich Classic on Monday. The C. Smith/Blixt team defeated Scott Brown and Kevin Kisner via a four-hole playoff. Perhaps a little extra celebrating is in store for Smith and Blixt this week. Bud Cauley also performed well last week, he and partner Justin Thomas finished T5. Louis Oosthuizen finished T24 at the Zurich Classic, partnering with fellow South African Branden Grace. Oosthuizen has an extensive WD history over the last few years, but this is his first withdrawal of the season. Alternates Tyler Aldridge, Stuart Appleby, Steve Wheatcroft, and Willy Willcox will be teeing it up on Thursday at Eagle Point Golf Club.
