Carey Price Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Goalie Turning Back the Clock
Carey Price isn't old per se, but his form lately has been reminiscent of the Vezina (and Hart) winner in 2015. He has won three consecutive games and hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of those starts. The matchups were against Columbus, Boston, and Colorado, so not exactly pushovers from an offensive perspective. In his only other appearance against the Coyotes this season, he stopped 36 of 37 shots in route to a win. I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar effort tonight at home.
Finding value in the crease with a Canadien
Carey Price is set to make his first start since last Thursday when the Montreal Canadiens were blanked 3-0 by the Los Angeles Kings. Last season was a disaster for Price, but he draws a decent matchup against a 1-4 St. Louis team that has yet to really develop chemistry after a number of offseason changes. Price looked sharp in Toronto opening night and he backed it up in Pittsburgh, allowing just a goal to the (normally) high-flying Pittsburgh Penguins. Braden Holtby and John Gibson are the top goalies of the night, but Price provides a decent chunk of salary relief in this coin flip contest.
Cheap Goalie is Favored at Home
While he might not be considered the best goalie in the world as he was a few years ago, Carey Price is still talented and should have plenty in the tank at 31 years old. He had a miserable season last year, but I'm willing to chalk that up to the trainwreck around him. So far this year, he has allowed just four goals in two games. He is a -120 favorite at home and is one of the cheapest goalies on the board on DraftKings.
This goalie has to turn it around eventually, doesn't he?
EDIT: It looks like Antti Niemi is starting tonight. I would not advise using Niemi even against a depleted Avalanche team. Instead, I would look to Andersen, Varlamov or even one of the goalies in the FLA@VAN game. --- Carey Price is having a disaster of a season. He has a 2.97 goals against average and a .906 save percentage this year, and his recent numbers are not any better. However, when a goalie with the talent of Price, regardless of the team or defense in front of him, is this cheap, it's hard to ignore him. The Colorado Avalanche are a pretty depleted team, and on this short slate I am going to bank on Price shutting them down. He could be popular for the same reasons I've stated above, but he could also be low owned because of how bad he has been. He is a tournament play only but he still has elite upside.
Price is Right on Sunday?
If there were ever a spot for Price to “get right,” this would be it. Ottawa scored three goals last night, so by the law of averages, they should not score for another 24 days. In reality, the Senators have been one of the worst offenses in the league. Despite having some talented forwards, they have not run a system conducive to fast play or a volume of quality scoring attempts. Ottawa being without a top scorer in Mark Stone helps, as well. While Montreals defense has certainly had their struggles, they should be able to win their 5v5 matchups. Where they are most vulnerable is on the penalty kill, so it helps that the Senators have been one of the least productive power play teams in the league. Heading into the game this afternoon, Ottawa has the sixth lowest rates of both shot attempts and high-danger attempts, while also sporting the lowest scoring chances-for per hour on the power play. If Price cannot get it done here, well, there is always next year.
This goalie could be the lowest owned on this short slate
Tonight is just a two game slate, so ownership is going to be high across the board. However, with Tuukka Rask likely to have the highest ownership, one would expect Carey Price to have the lowest. In using Price in this difficult road matchup against the Bruins, we're hoping that he is in fact the lowest owned goaltender. The numbers are ugly this year, but Price has historically done well against the Bruins as he is 24-9-5 with a 2.39 goals against average and a .922 save percentage in his career against Boston. Price has really struggled this season outside of a hot November so there is definitely worry when using him tonight. Being a short slate, his likely ownership and cost are the two biggest factors in rolling him out.
Looking for this struggling goaltender to bounce back tonight
Carey Price has been really bad this season, but it is still Carey Price. Maybe it is naive to continue to go back to the well with him, but he didn't just forget how to play hockey. The Habs are in Calgary taking on the Flames, which is actually a decent matchup for a goalie. The Flames are ninth in the NHL averaging 33.2 shots per game, but they are 23rd in the NHL averaging 2.77 goals per game. This is a great opportunity for Price to face a lot of shots from a team that struggles to score. While Price has struggled to keep the puck out of the net, there are some cheap goalie options out there tonight that his high price tag and poor play could result in reduced ownership.
Top Goalie Tonight?
After a strong month of November (2.00 GAA, .937 SV%), Carey Price has stumbled a bit in December (3.55 GAA, .885 SV%), but I still like him to bounce back with a strong game tonight at the Bell Centre. The Detroit Red Wings fire over 30 shots on goal per game (30.9), but have trouble scoring (28th overall in the National Hockey League in goals per game), which will work out nicely for Price this evening. Look for at least 25 saves tonight as Price cruises to an easy victory.
This goalie is a solid leverage play in tournaments
I would expect the top line in Ottawa to be one of the two highest owned lines tonight. Despite them being a great play, something to do in tournaments especially on a short slate is to go with the opposing goalie. Now, this play would be much better if this slate was larger as on a four game slate, I expect Carey Price to still hold significant ownership. However, I still like Price on this slate. Since returning from injury, he has allowed just one goal over two game, stopping 73 of 74 shots in the process. The Senators sit 22nd in the NHL with just a 55.83 CF/60, despite averaging three goals per game. I expect their goal scoring to slow down a bit unless the Sens can start to generate more shots and scoring chances. Tonight the Habs are on home ice as Price looks to continue his hot return from injury.
In his first game back from injury, this goalie is in a great spot tonight
Carey Price is playing his first game off of injury tonight, and they are at home against the Buffalo Sabres. Tonight, there are 19 teams playing on a back to back and only three that are not. Two of those three teams are playing eachother. Montreal is the one rested team that is playing a tired team, which is a great spot for Price in his first game back. Everybody knows about his struggles prior to his injury, but there doesn't get a much better spot than a tired Sabres team who is among the bottom three in the NHL in just about every offensive category. Despite being his first game back, Price is in a great spot to put up a big number and I believe he'll be very low owned as nobody is going to want to pay that price tag until they see that he has turned things around.
