Charles Howell in search of a bounce back season

Charles Howell arrives at Waialae Country Club with hopes of jump-starting his 2022 season. After a year in which Howell finished outside the top 100 in the final FedEx Cup standings in over a decade, this PGA Tour veteran will look to play well at a course that has certainly fit his game over the years. In his last 5 starts at this event, Howell has 4 top 20 finishes while gaining an average of 7 shots tee to green. For those who are new to the DFS community, Howell has always been a player you could target with a high degree of confidence during the west coast swing. Howell tends to putt better on the west coast and then often fizzles when the tour moves to Florida later in the spring.

Charles Howell provides upside at low ownership

Currently, inside the top 70 in this year's FedEx Cup race, Charles Howell is having a very nice 2020 PGA season. In this very weak field, Howell is a proven PGA tour player worth taking a shot on in all formats for the week. Currently projected to have an ownership number lower than 8% Howell is a player that simply is being overlooked. Howell is a great ball striker who has historically played well on courses that lend themselves to birdies. Last season only 7 courses played easier than The TPC Twin Cities. With a similar setup expected again this year, we can expect a ton of bridies and eagles for the week. At last week’s Memorial Howell started hot and faded on the weekend, but if you watched any coverage from last week he was not the only golfer to struggle on what was a very hard setup. Howell finished inside the top 25 at last year's 3M Open.

Charles Howell and J.J Spaun are both no longer in the field

Just shortly after DFS prices were released today news surfaced of some early player movement for The Honda Classic. Both Charles Howell and J.J. Spaun are no longer in the field this week. Brandon Hagy and Michael Gligic have gained entry into the field this week and should get added to the DFS pricing pool within the next day.

Charles Howell flying under the radar this week

The book on Charles Howell is that you want to play him early and often during the season as he tends to play his best golf early and fade late. Entering this week a rested Howell is somewhat going overlooked as a solid source of value for the week. As a past winner of this event, Howell has a great track record at Rivera including five straight made cuts. Priced-down in this strong field, Howell represents a great way to grab both stability and upside for the week. In addition to his win, Howell has 4 top 15 or better finishes at this event and has gained almost 14 shots tee to green in his last five starts at The Genisis Open. With current low projected ownership, Howell makes for a great pivot off other popular value-priced golfers.

Charles Howell looks to build on an excellent course history

For those new to DFS golf, Charles Howell is the type of player many in the industry like to target early in the season. For whatever reason, Howell typically plays his best golf from now until the end of March. This week's Sony Open is a place that Howell has played well for a very long period of time. Howell has made all of his 18 cuts at this event highlighted by 10 top ten or better finishes. In his last 40 rounds at Waialae Country Club Howell has only failed to break par 3 times. For those of you looking to gain an edge at Showdown slates, Howell has posted 15 rounds of 66 ( 4 under ) or better in his last 10 starts at The Sony Open. Currently projected at around 11% ownership, Howell is a player that feels somewhat overlooked this week.

The Winter Season ATM Machine

If the calendar reads January, February, or March, it’s probably a good time to think about rostering Charles Howell. Howell is a cut-making machine at this time of year. This one is a nod to the course history fans out there. Howell has made the cut all EIGHTEEN times he has teed it up at this venue, and TEN of those have resulted in top ten finishes. That is incredible consistency and upside. I write him up for this event basically every year, and he delivers almost every time. On cue, he delivered another eighth place finish a year ago. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Howell is an elite play on these Pacific Coast layouts, and this one is arguably his favorite.

Charles Howell is a West Coast specialist that is flying under the radar this week

Sometimes narratives in sport are stronger than the actual results. Charles Howell and playing well early on the season ( West Coast Golf) is one of the more accurate narratives on tour. For many years Howell would start off the season strong to only fade later in the year. By playing in his first tour championship in 8 years Howell ended up proving the second half of his narrative wrong last season. Fresh off a top-five finish at last week's Safeway Open ( sub 10% ownership), Howell heads into another West Coast type event with a ton of positive momentum on his side. Howell has made his last four cuts at TPC Summerlin highlighted by 3 top 20 or better showings. Once again trending towards a low ownership number Howell has the makings of a great option in all formats this week.

Even at a discount Charles Howell is currently projected towards a low ownership number

With the new format of this year's Tour Championship, we can basically say that the tournament has started before golfers even tee it up on Thursday. With players assigned a starting score based upon FedEx Cup standings, daily fantasy sites have adjusted prices in order to accommodate the new format. Starting at even-par Charles Howell will have to overcome a 10 shot deficit if he hopes to win the Tour Championship. Priced at 5k on DK Howell currently garnishes the lowest projected ownership of the week. Only 4 shots out of finishing in the sixth place position ( 12 DK points), Howell feels both underpriced and overlooked for the week. With four guaranteed rounds of golf, a 5k golfer would have to play pretty bad to not exceed his value for the week. It's hard to compare golf to any other DFS sport, but if you look at pricing vs opportunity, Howell should be considered a better play than he currently projects.

Charles Howell is no longer in the field

One day after a strong finish at The John Deere Classic, Charles Howell has decided to skip the year's final major. Howell will be replaced in the field by Brian Harman. At this time there is no injury news associated with this move. Harman will get added to LineupHq once he is added to the DFS pricing pools.

Charles Howell looks to regain form displayed earlier this season

Currently ranked in the 15th position in this year's FedEx Cup race, Charles Howell has a great chance to make it to his first Tour Championship since the 2011 season. Fueled by 9 early season top 25 or better finishes including his first win in over 10 years has this PGA Tour veteran playing some of the best golf in his career. Having cooled off some since his hot start, Howell enters this week looking to get his season back on track. Priced down due to a dip in performance has Howell near the top of our projection model for the week in terms of Pt/$/K. With a brand new venue in play this week there will be very few players with any significant course history. It's never a bad idea to target great ball strikers, and on a week where there is less information on how a course will play I tend to take a long term view of player in terms of talent. Howell has a lot left to play for his season, and talent alone makes him a great play in his price range for the week.
