Doug Martin inactive Monday for violating team rules
Martin won't play against Atlanta due to a violation of team rules, and it's looking like an up-and-down tenure as the Bucs lead back is quickly coming to an end. Peyton Barber will draw the start at RB tonight and now becomes a much stronger value target with Martin completely out of the picture - it was thought that the two would continue sharing work after a relatively split bag in Week 14. Barber is the only piece of the TB backfield worth targeting this evening, although Charles Sims could see a little more work with Martin out of the picture.
Peyton Barber expected to start for Buccaneers Week 13; C Joe Hawley inactive
With Doug Martin out with a concussion, Barber is expected to get the start in Tampa's backfield. He's returned 2.9 yards per carry this season and he figures to lose some early-down work to Jacquizz Rodgers and passing downs to Charles Sims. On top of that, the Packers run defense has been solid the past four weeks, limiting RBs to 67.3 rushing yards per game (9th). On the season, they're 11th in adjusted line yards while Tampa Bay's offensive line is 19th (per FO). They'll also be without Hawley, who was going to fill in for in the injured Ali Marpet, so Barber will be running behind a third-string center.
Buccaneers activated Doug Martin (suspension) for Week 5
Martin will play against the Patriots Thursday night after missing the first three games due to a suspension. He's expected to have a limited workload in his return as he hasn't been able to practice with the team while he served his three-game ban. Even though the Patriots defense has been poor against running backs, allowing the second-most yards per carry (5.1), it may be best to avoid this backfield this week as Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims will pick up snaps and touches. New England has been terrible against the pass as well; they've allowed the highest-passer rating (116.5) and the most passing yards (324 per game). Through four games, every opposing quarterback has thrown for over 300 yards and at least two touchdowns. In the past, they've been able to limit their opponents' top weapons but this season they've allowed the second-most receiving yards per game to WR1s (110.7, per FO). It's a great spot for Jameis Winston and Mike Evans.
Bears LB Jerrell Freeman not expected to play Sunday
Freeman is dealing with a concussion and a pectoral injury, putting his Week 2 playing status in serious doubt. Practice squad linebacker Jonathan Anderson has been promoted, which implies Chicago doesn't expect Freeman to play. It would be a big loss as he was their leading tackler a year ago (110) and earned an elite 93.9 grade from Pro Football Focus. If Freeman misses, it would provide an upgrade for running backs Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims.
Charles Sims to IR; Doug Martin expected to be inactive for Tampa Bay this week
The Bucs have placed Charles Sims on the IR and Doug Martin is also expected to be unavailable this week. Jacquizz Rodgers should get the bulk of the RB work with Peyton Barber spelling him some. Tampa Bay still has something to play for with an outside (albeit very slim) shot at the playoffs so Rodgers is a viable DFS option despite a relatively tough match up against a top 10 ranked run defense in the Panthers.
Doug Martin INACTIVE Saturday
No reason was given for Martin's surprise scratch. In his absence, Charles Sims should lead the backfield in touches, with Jacquizz Rodgers getting worked in as well. The Bucs visit the Saints for a game with a 52.5-point total this afternoon, which sets up a nice spot for Sims. The Saints rank dead last against receiving running backs, and he's excellent catching passes out of the backfield. Sims is now an interesting play in the 4pm slate.
Jacquizz Rodgers inactive for Sunday night
Rodgers is a healthy scratch. Tampa Bay will roll with Doug Martin and Charles Sims in the backfield. Last week, Martin out-touched Sims 25 to 7. He should be the feature back again tonight against the Cowboys, but it'll be a tough spot; Dallas ranks 4th in rush DVOA. The Buccaneers are 6.5-point favorites, so the expected game script isn't on Martin's side either as he'll lose some passing down work to Sims. The Cowboys rank 24th against the pass; expect plenty of targets for Mike Evans.
Charles Sims activated from IR, will play Sunday
Sims will return to action for the first time since Week 4. He could get a decent snap count right off the bat with the Bucs thinned out at receiver this week. Tampa Bay has also talked about getting Jacquizz Rodgers more involved in the offense. Both of these guys will cut into Doug Martin's workload. Martin has not been effective since returning from injury; he's only averaging 3.0 yards per carry. Even though they have a nice matchup with the Saints, it'll be hard to trust Martin to be productive, especially if he's going to lose touches. He won't be safe enough for cash games, but could be used as a risky contrarian tournament option given the matchup.
Charles Sims activated from IR, has chance to play in Week 14
Sims (knee) will be available to play Sunday, according to coach Dirk Koetter. With Doug Martin (back) getting banged up this past game, he may get some touches. He won't be a recommended fantasy option in Week 14 though, unless we hear more positive news, but he could potentially have some PPR value down the stretch depending on how Martin's injury shakes out.
Charles Sims (knee) placed on injured reserve
Sims injured his knee last week against the Broncos, which caused him to leave the field for a bit. Even though he finished the game, he ended up missing practice all of last week. Sims was already declared inactive for tonight's game, but it appears the injury is serious enough to put his entire season in jeopardy. Jacquizz Rodgers will get the bulk of the work until Doug Martin returns. When Martin gets himself back in the lineup, his floor and ceiling should increase as he should see more snaps and passing down work. Rodgers is an unreliable backup, but he has a shot to prove otherwise tonight. He's a risky play against a tough run defense, although he should see be on the field a lot and he'll be fighting for future playing time.
