Cheng-Tsung Pan Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Cheng-Tsung Pan continues to gain steam

Besides a few big named players, this is an overall pretty weak field in terms of finding players you feel comfortable adding to a roster pool. On a site like DraftKings, the hardest roster choices surround picking value plays that you can trust for the week. Having only missed two cuts since May of last year, Cheng-Tsung Pan is a player gaining interest in terms of projected ownership for the week. Over his last 22 starts on tour, Pan has 8 top 25 or better finishes including a pair of top-five finishes late last season. With a game built around accuracy, Pan seems to be a great fit for this course and he will look to improve on a 37th and a 17th place showing in his first two tries at The Honda Classic. In a week in which value is very thin, the addition of a steady player like Pan makes a ton of sense in all formats.

Progressively Better Results

Let me start by saying that Webb Simpson is an excellent play this week in all formats. He’s clearly the top overall play of the slate. However, I like my balanced lineup builds a bit more, so I will be starting with C.T. Pan instead. He has posted progressively better finishes in five straight events: 38th, 30th, 23rd, 22nd, and 16th. He fits the course perfectly, as his two biggest strengths are hitting fairways and his iron play. He clearly has an eye for the course, as he has finished in the top 15 at this event in each of the last two years. He’s my favorite play on the board and a golfer that I plan to hit the lock button on this week.

Good Fit and a High Floor

Pan has been a regular feature in my column during the swing season and while he doesn’t have any high finishes, he has yet to disappoint. He has four straight top 40 finishes on tour and he’s made the cut here in both of his attempts. Some will say that he lacks upside, but he nearly won the Wyndham a few months back. This course is a great fit for Pan, as he is ranked eighth in good drives gained, sixth in strokes gained approach, and tenth in par four scoring. He’s a safe bet to make the cut and I like his odds to finish inside the top ten this week.

Trending in the Right Direction

Pan is a golfer that I’ve been high on over the last few months. He really doesn’t have a weakness in his game. He’s ranked in the top 35 in this field in every single statistic that I’m looking at this week — off the tee, approach, birdie or better percentage, par four scoring, par five scoring, around the green, and putting. He has two top five finishes over the last couple of months and played fairly well in Malaysia, finishing with a T30. It doesn’t hurt that he played this even last season, finishing T47.

Dark Horse to Win in Malaysia

Pan is my dark horse to win this week. He knocked on the door so many times last season, but ultimately couldn’t get the job done. He’s a golfer to watch in the swing season and I will be playing him every time he steps out onto the course. He’s ranked seventh in this field in good drive percentage, 18th in strokes gained approach, third in par four scoring, and seventh in bogey avoidance. His par five scoring is a small concern, but three of the four par fives on this course are reachable by the field. Pan played here last season, finishing in a tie for 17th.

Cheng-Tsung Pan to feature a new caddie this week

PGA Tour sophomore C.T. Pan took to social media earlier this week to announce the addition of a new caddie. Pan tweeted that he will test his marriage by adding his wife to the bag for The Wyndham Championship. Comfortably inside the top 125 Pan will keep his tour card for next season, but will need to play well over the next few weeks if he has any hopes of making a deep run into the FedEx Cup race. Pan surfaced earlier this season as a very popular play for The Travelers Championship, but a missed cut let many in the DFS community with a sour taste. With a game built more an accuracy and less on distance, Pan should be on the radar once again this week as a solid source of salary relief. With four top 20 or better finishes in his last nine starts, Pan provides more than just cut making ability. Even with the addition of a new caddie, Pan makes for a great play in GPP's for the final event of the regular season.

Great Fit Statistically

Pan has been playing some excellent golf recently. In fact, he’s all the way up to 51st in the Official World Golf Rankings. He does everything well statistically, which is always nice. When you take good putters, you are in danger of them having a bad week on the greens. When you take elite ball strikers, you are in danger of them being slightly off. With golfers like Pan, he can afford to have a weakness in his game, as the other parts can make up for it. He has posted three top 20 finishes in his last four events on tour and he made the cut here in his only appearance (T68).

Great Bounce-Back Spot

We’ve had some really bad chalk bust over the last couple of tournaments. We had Ben Crane and Joel Dahmen a few weeks ago (and yes I wrote up both) and we had Pan last week. Anytime a mediocre golfer becomes the chalk, it makes sense to fade them given the volatility of golf in general. Pan is in a great bounce-back spot this week and is a great pivot off of the chalky Adam Hadwin, whose tee to green game has been trending in the wrong direction. Pan is cheap, his statistics match the course nicely, and he’s seen this course before. The best time to hop on is when everyone else hops off.

Converging Trends for the Short Knocker

Enters with progressive form (MC-T76-T46-T32-T20-T18). He’s trending in the right direction and that includes five straight events where he gained strokes tee-to-green. This short hitter comes with a load of pedigree but he hasn’t truly popped on the PGA TOUR yet. Not long off the tee, most TOUR events are tough for him to keep up but that’s not the case here at TPC River Highlands. Most impressively, he’s posted GIR rates better than the field average in 15 of his last 17 starts. That is one of the key factors here since the rough around the greens is extremely difficult. Pan’s fairways-and-greens style of play should pay dividends this week in Connecticut, making it an easy decision to add him to our player pool.

Field Update for the FedEx St. Jude Classic

An already depleted field just got a little weaker on Tuesday morning. As expected a few participants from yesterday's U.S. Open sectional qualifier have withdrawn from this week's tournament. Steve Striker, Keegan Bradley, Jamie Lovemark, Kelly Kraft and C.T. Pan have all been removed from this week's field.
