Chris Davis Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Chris Davis (knee) scratched Saturday; Pedro Severino replaces

Davis has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays due to a sore knee but will still be available off the bench to pinch-hit. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Pedro Severino, who will now handle the designated hitter duties and slot into the sixth spot in the order, which slides Rio Ruiz down one spot to seventh, respectively. However, the remainder of the Orioles lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Tyler Glasnow at home this evening.

Cheap Stack In Great Hitting Environment

Any time I can find a 4-man stack on FanDuel for under $10k total that contains hitters from the top half of an order, it will pique my interest. The Orioles only have a 4.1 implied run total, but there are actually 7 other teams who have a *worse* implied run total, many of which have a higher cumulative stack price tag. Eovaldi is tough of righties, but quite weak against lefties, and especially in a great hitting environment at Fenway Park, I'm willing to take a shot on these dirt cheap lefty Orioles bats at very low ownership.

Orioles offense has plenty of upside vs. bad starter in Coors

Once a promising prospect, Jeff Hoffman hasn’t really put together a good season at any level since 2016. In 35.2 innings in AAA this year Hoffman had a 7.20 ERA / 5.36 xFIP with a 2.02 HR/9 and a 10.2% walk rate. Most projection systems have Hoffman at a 5+ ERA at the MLB level for 2019. The Orioles have a healthy 5.27 implied total currently vs. Hoffman, but maybe that’s too low given the matchup and environment. Dwight Smith Jr. (.343 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trey Mancini (.337), Pedro Severino (.331), Chris Davis (.322), Rio Ruiz (.317), Jonathan Villar (.310) and Stevie Wilkerson (.309) are all in the O’s projected lineup and have been decent bats vs. RHP this year. Rio Ruiz (.364 xwOBA over the past 10 days) and Trey Mancini (.360) have been the Orioles’ hottest hitters of late, while Chris Davis (.144) has seemingly fallen into another cold streak. Rio Ruiz is just $3.8k and is easily the best value in the lineup. Villar and Wilkerson project to bat 1-2 in the order and are both under $4.8k. Davis and Severino are all available under $4k tonight.

It Makes Sense Today

If you listen to the podcast, then you already know I hate playing Chris Davis. Like I said yesterday, I think he makes sense against a low strikeout pitcher. Since the start of 2018, Ervin Santana has a 12.5% strikeout rate against left-handed hitters. He also has a .393 wOBA with a .296 ISO to lefties in that span. Davis has a .205 ISO with a 45.5% hard-hit rate against righties this season. His biggest issue is contact and strikeouts, which shouldn't be as big of an issue in this spot.

Chris Davis (illness) scratched Tuesday; Joey Rickard replaces

Davis has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Tuesday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Joey Rickard, who will now play right field and slot into the sixth spot in the order, which slides Hanser Alberto down one batting position to seventh, respectively. However, the remainder of the Orioles lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Tyler Glasnow on the road this evening.

Double-Digit Strikeout Potential In The Bronx

If you assumed Andrew Cashner was the subject of this note, you are sadly mistaken. Masahiro Tanaka will start Opening Day against the Orioles, who are trotting out a glorified Triple-A caliber roster. Let’s take a look at Baltimore’s 3-7 hitters: Jonathan Villar (.117 ISO, .311 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate vs. RHP in 2018), Trey Mancini (.188 ISO, .319 wOBA, 25.8% K-rate), Rio Ruiz (.000 ISO, .198 wOBA, 33.3% K-rate in 15 AB), Joey Rickard (.143 ISO, .295 wOBA, 20.8% K-rate) and the all-mighty Chris Davis (.124 ISO, .253 wOBA, 36.7% K-rate). Jesus Sucre and rookie Richie Martin round out the bottom two spots in the order. Although New York’s stellar bullpen will not require Aaron Boone to push Tanaka this season, he has double-digit strikeout potential in this one, even if he’s limited to five or six innings on the hill. Last season, he struck out 25.0% of his opponents and had an elite 5.5% walk rate. His “stuff” was sensational, as evidenced by the fact that opposing hitters swung at 36.3% of his pitches outside of the zone. We will want to pick on this Orioles lineup all season long and Opening Day is certainly no exception, even in the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Since the Bombers are massive favorites, Tanaka should fully be expected to not only dominate, but also earn a win in this contest, boosting his DFS outlook. He won’t come cheap, but he has similar scoring potential to higher-priced aces like Max Scherzer, Jacob DeGrom, Justin Verlander and company.

Joey Rickard scratched Monday; Chris Davis replaces

Rickard has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Monday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays due to yet another lineup change by manager Buck Showalter, the second one of the day. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Chris Davis, who will play first base slot into the fifth spot in the order, which slides Tim Beckham and Renato Nunez down one batting position to sixth and seventh, respectively. It goes without saying that there have been some noteworthy changes to this Orioles order, so be sure to check out the updated lineup on the Starting Lineups page as they face off against left-hander Ryan Borucki at home this evening.

A Cheap Power Bat

Look, Chris Davis is a trash player right now. There's no way around it, but he is due for some positive regression and he doesn't have a terrible matchup. On the vs. RHP, Davis owns a .425 CXwOBA compared to an abysmal .259 wOBA meaning that he's due for a lot of positive regression. One of the biggest issues with Davis is his 35% k rate vs. RHP, but on the season Lopez is only K'ing lefties at a 16.9% clip. There is a decent chance that Davis puts up a big fat 0 here, but there is also a decent chance he ends the day with a bomb. Take the upside at this price and move on.

Chris Davis (illness) scratched Monday

Davis has been scratched from the Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Monday’s matchup against the Seattle Mariners due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Chance Sisco, who will handle the designated hitter duties and slot into the seventh spot in the order, which bumps Tim Beckham and Renato Nunez each up one batting position to fifth and sixth, respectively. It goes without saying that there have been some noteworthy changes to this Orioles order, so be sure to check out the updated lineup on the Starting Lineups page as they face off against right-hander Erasmo Ramirez on the road this evening.

Power Bat in a Plus Matchup

Look, Davis has been absolute trash this season, but a lot of that has to do with his sky high 35.7% K rate vs. RHP. If you look at how he's hit the ball when he actually puts it in play, you'll see that he has a .428 CXwOBA and today he draws a matchup against Heath Fillmyer. Fillmyer is a low K pitcher (13.8% on the season) and he gives up a lot of hard contact (40.6%). This is a perfect spot for Davis to crush his 3.5k price tag over on DK.
