Top line center far too cheap against struggling defense
Buffalo continues to bleed goals after the All-Star break as they have allowed a league-high 3.84 goals against per game. Even with Matt Duchene and Mark Stone on other teams now, Ottawa has found some success offensively. They put up four on Saturday in Edmonton, four in Vancouver and in their last home game 10 days ago, Ottawa buried six goals. Colin White hadn't played in two weeks, but suited up last time out and logged nearly 20 minutes of ice time, recording a power play assist. White is just $3,700 on DraftKings which opens up salary for someone like Connor McDavid.
This could be this upcoming UFA's last game for his current team
The Senators take on the New Jersey Devils who will have Cory Schneider in net. His lack of wins — zero to be exact — in the 2018 calendar year was eye-opening and while he’s finally broken that streak, his numbers this season are still terrible. A 3.69 goals against average and .883 save percentage is not at all threatening and Mark Stone could put up a big game as a result. He will be playing with Colin White and Brady Tkachuk as the Senators choose to rest Matt Duchene leading up to the trade deadline. While this could be Stone's last game as a Senator (will he be rested over the weekend?), I expect a big performance. This line makes up 3/5 of the top power play unit in Ottawa as they are joined by Thomas Chabot and Bobby Ryan. Remaining together throughout the game gives them elite upside in this matchup.
Ottawa center should see heavy workload
With the Ottawa Senators deciding to bench Matt Duchene to avoid any injury ahead of Monday's trade deadline, center Colin White will be in a prime spot to produce. Last time out, White picked up a pair of goals and an assist in the helter skelter 8-7 contest in Chicago. Tonight's matchup in New Jersey figures to feature goals, though the home side seems the more favorable one to target. Nonetheless, White has two goals in two meetings already with the Devils this season and his price is under $5,000 on both DraftKings and FanDuel which gives him tournament appeal.
This is the worst defensive team in the NHL but they still score in bunches.
The Ottawa Senators are the worst defensive team in the NHL, but they are also scoring a bunch as well. They are seventh in the league averaging 3.31 goals per game, despite their poor possession numbers. While this is unlikely to be sustained throughout the season, they do have a good matchup tonight. Although they are on the road, they are taking on an equally bad defensive team in the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are averaging 3.58 goals against per game (28th) and are on the tail-end of a back to back in which they lost 2-1 in Columbus while giving up 38 shots on goal. Mark Stone, Colin White and Brady Tkachuk make up the top line for the Senators and all three also play on the top power play unit. This gives the line full-game correlation and elite upside.
Underdogs Offer Value and Upside
The Senators are underdogs at +150 against the Devils, but I think this game should be more of a pick'em. The Devils have been unraveling lately, and will playing on the second of a back-to-back against a much more well-rested Ottawa team. Ottawa's issue this year hasn't been scoring goals, as they rank 8th in the NHL in goals per game. Colin White has been excellent lately with 7 points in his last 7 games. His linemates are more expensive, but further value can be found in Top 6 forwards Chris Tierney and Mikkel Boedker.
This center should continue to thrive
Colin White has already been fantastic this season, and last time out when he was recommended, White potted a goal and an assist. Now, with Matt Duchene on the shelf for at least several weeks, White should see a solid boost in ice time and a surge in power play time rather than sharing a good portion of it like he has been. White's price on FanDuel ($4,100) allows you to grab a stud like Sidney Crosby. The price on DraftKings ($5,200) is best served only for tournaments, but this is a center who we could see at $6,000 before long given the role.
Senators look for better luck in rematch against Canadiens
In a rematch of Tuesday night's game in Montreal which was a tight affair until Montreal blew it open in the second period, goals should be expected again tonight. On home ice, the Ottawa Senators are averaging four goals per game which is the third-best mark in the National Hockey League. White's price across the industry is affordable, and his linemates Brady Tkachuk and Mark Stone have flashed upside all season long. White himself had 10 points (5G, 5A) in 14 November games. Everyone loves to pick on the Ottawa defense, but their offense continues to reward backers as well. With so many stud centers on this slate, White won't see much ownership. Look for Ottawa to come out firing early.
No slowing down this Senator center
Despite averaging under 15 minutes of ice time per game this month, Colin White has collected 10 points (5G, 5A) in just 13 games. The young center is blossoming faster than most expected, and a lot of that can be contributed to playing with the uderrated Mark Stone and sensational rookie Brady Tkachuk, who has entered the Calder Trophy conversation after it looked like Elias Pettersson would run away with it. As bad as Ottawa's defense is, their 3.92 goals scored per game on home ice sits third-best in the National Hockey League. White and his linemates make for a worthy line stack in tournaments given their budding chemistry and exploitable matchup.
This terrible defensive team also has an elite scoring offence this season.
The Ottawa Senators are the worst defensive team in the NHL. However, they are also one of the highest scoring teams as well as their 3.56 goals for per game are fourth in the NHL. The "second" line, if you want to call it that, comprised of Mark Stone, Colin White and Brady Tkachuk is one that is certainly in play tonight. Over their last 10 games, both Stone and Tkachuk have 10 points and White has 7 in his last 9. The trio play on the same power play unit with Thomas Chabot and Bobby Ryan. The Senators power play is tied for 10th in the NHL converting on 22.9 percent of their opportunities.
Two Bad Defensive Teams Square Off
On such a large slate, it will be easy for people to overlook the Detroit-Ottawa game. Both teams will likely be on the outside looking in come playoff time, and it's been largely thanks to letting in for too many goals. Colin White is currently listed as questionable, but is expected to play tonight. Before leaving his last game early with an injury, White had been lighting up the scoresheet with two multi-point outings in three games. His price is still extremely reasonable throughout the industry and can be paired with linemates Mark Stone and Brady Tkachuk.
