Connor Cook Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Raiders LT Donald Penn ruled out for Saturday

Losing Penn (knee) is a big blow to Oakland's offense. With Penn, Oakland's offensive line ranked first in Football Outsiders' adjusted sack rate metric (3.4%). His absence could allow Houston to get more pressure on Connor Cook. Another thing that allowed the Raiders' offensive line to be successful was Derek Carr's quick release, which is something he's become known for. Cook, who was sacked twice on 23 dropbacks in Week 17, will likely be a step or two behind Carr's speed, exposing himself to more pressures, hits, and sacks. Latavius Murray and the rest of the running game takes a downgrade without Penn as well. The left tackle was PFF's third-highest graded run blocker this season.

Even with Connor Cook starting, the Houston D/ST unit may be worth fading

With Cook making his first career start in the playoffs on the road, expect the Texans D/ST to be the most popular play at the position. There is definitely merit to playing the fade - Houston ranks 24th in sacks, 21st in interceptions and 24th in fumbles recovered. Oakland also allowed the fewest sacks on the year (18), so pivoting to Seattle or Pittsburgh seems like a wise choice in any game format. Both of those defenses rank in the top ten in sacks, and quarterback pressure is a great way to predict defensive touchdowns, which are vital to GPP success. Detroit has allowed the 11th-most sacks on the year with Miami coming in at 23rd. The Packers are also a viable option, as they rank sixth in sacks against turnover prone Eli Manning.

Connor Cook will start for Raiders this weekend

The Raiders are down to their 3rd string QB, rookie Connor Cook and he will get the start for their wildcard game against the Texans. Cook didn't show much in college and faces one of the top defenses in the league in Texans. He's a clear avoid, even on a four game slate, and the Texans DST becomes one of the top options (although they will easily be the highest owned DST so there is some merit to fading in GPPs) on the board.

Connor Cook expected to start for Raiders Saturday

It looks like Matt McGloin's shoulder injury will prevent him from starting for the Raiders this weekend. Instead, Oakland plans to start rookie Connor Cook, who will have a short week to prepare for the Texans 5th-ranked pass defense. He struggled last week against the Broncos, posting an 11.9 QBR, but he was forced into a tough situation. Not only did he face the Broncos, but the third-string quarterback was running plays he never practiced before. Unfortunately, a person can only learn so much in a single week and Cook will likely struggle to wrap his head around their playbook prior to his first start. Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree take big downgrades in this situation. Houston's DST will certainly be a popular option, especially with Jadeveon Clowney returning to the lineup.

Raiders will "see how the week goes" before naming starting quarterback

Both starter Matt McGloin and his replacement, Connor Cook, struggled against the Broncos Sunday. Of course, it's one of the toughest matchups for quarterbacks and Cook was reportedly running plays he never even practiced before, so neither were in a great spot. Head coach Jack Del Rio wasn't ready to commit to either guy on Monday, implying that he'll give both a shot in practice this week. Houston's pass defense ranks 5th in DVOA; no matter which quarterback Del Rio goes with, they'll likely struggle. It's not a great situation for Amari Cooper or Michael Crabtree, both of whom should be avoided in cash games, if not entirely. The Texans have forced a turnover in eight straight games and the Raiders have an implied team total of 16.5 points. Houston's DST is a solid option.
