Curtis McElhinney Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Goalie is way too cheap even in tough matchup

Curtis McElhinney is just $6,700 on DraftKings in what is arguably a tough matchup with the Washington Capitals. However, Curtis has been solid on home ice, going 11-5-1 with a 2.42 GAA and .917 SV%. Although Carolina just lost 4-1 to Washington in D.C., Carolina has been strong in Raleigh while the Capitals have not found the same level of success on the road as they have on home ice. With a modest total (6) and Carolina checking as a decent-sized favorite, taking a chance on Curtis in tournaments at such a cheap price is viable to load up elsewhere.

Goalie takes on team who has not scored in nearly 200 minutes

Curtis McElhinney has yet to be confirmed, but with Petr Mrazek starting last night and a somewhat soft opponent in Buffalo, it is likely McElhinney will get the nod. Jack Eichel is set to return for the Sabres tonight which will certainly help their offense, but the team has struggled mightily after their hot start to the season. The Sabres have a single regulation win in their last 14 games. Meanwhile, Carolina continues to produce strong results. A sizzling Sergei Bobrovsky stood in their way last night. Curtis (or Mrazek if he starts) make for an affordable option in the crease if looking for a likely win in cash games.

In tournaments, taking a chance on either Linus Ullmark or Carter Hutton makes sense as they should see a heavy number of shots. Though Carolina's offense has been much better with the addition of Nino Niederreiter, time and time again this season we have seen goalies put up massive numbers against Carolina. Buffalo's goalie is cheap, contrarian and could be a difference maker in tournaments.

Hot Goalie Faces One of League's Worst Offenses

Curtis McElhinney has won four consecutive starts, allowing one goal in three of those and two goals in the other. For the season, he's 7-2-0 with a 2.12 GAA and .930 SV%. For comparison, Pekka Rinne won the Vezina Trophy last year for best NHL goalie with a 2.31 GAA and .927 SV%, so McElhinney has clearly been outstanding this season. Tonight he gets a Ducks team who ranks second to last in the NHL in goals per game at 2.29, trailing only the Kings (2.2).

Backup goalie aims to tame Panthers

Curtis McElhinney has been solid (5-2, 2.43 GAA, .909 SV%) in seven starts this season. Normally a matchup with the Florida Panthers would be intimidating, especially for a team like Carolina which dominates possession, but if they can keep Florida's top line in check, McElhinney could be in for a strong night. The Hurricanes check in as a moderate favorite (-150) and are coming off back to back wins over two of the better offenses in the league, New Jersey (1 goal allowed) and Toronto (2 goals allowed). At $7,600 on DraftKings and $7,500 on FanDuel, Curtis could collect his sixth win in the season while minimizing damage from an offense missing a pivotal piece in Vincent Trocheck.

Top Goalie Tonight

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a massive favorite tonight on home ice as they host a Buffalo Sabres team that struggles to both win games and score goals (dead last in the National Hockey League in goals per game), putting Curtis McElhinney at the top of my list tonight in all formats. McElhinney has been sensational backing up starter Frederik Andersen this season, posting a 2.15 GAA, a .933 SV% and 3 shutouts, and I think we see another strong performance from him tonight at the Air Canada Centre. McElhinney is a cash game lock, and with the Maple Leafs style of play, he should see enough shots to be GPP relevant as well.

This backup goaltender has been surprisingly decent this season

Curtis McElhinney is not a goaltender you normally want to roster and tonight is not different. On this three-game slate, goaltending is a tough position to really nail down. Nobody is going to want to roster McElhinney tonight, which makes him an interesting option for tournaments. He's a bit cheaper than other goalies on the slate at $7,600 on DraftKings. McElhinney has been decent for a backup that always plays on the tail-end of a back to back when the team is tired. He has a respectable 2.55 goals against average and .921 save percentage. With no goalie in any real great spot outside of the chalky Brian Elliott, getting a goalie at lower ownership will be preferable and just hoping he doesn't blow it for you.

Beefy Winger Takes Sizzling Start to Toronto

The 6' 5" product of Quebec is off to a sizzling start to the new season with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in six games. Mantha forms a formidable top line with Henrik Zetterberg (3 goals, 4 assists) and Gustav Nyquist (2 goals, 1 assist). Last season, Anthony Mantha manufactured 36 points (17 goals, 19 assists) in 60 games played, and he should be in line for an even better season for a decent Detroit team. Mantha played particularly well against the Leafs last year as he found two goals and an assist in three games. Additionally, Anthony potted 82% of his goals on the road last season. It is a tough spot for Toronto after two big wins and career backup Curtis McElhinney likely in net. Anthony should be heavily involved at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto tonight.

Cheap Backup Goalie Makes First Start

On such a short slate, the salary saving options in net are quite limited. Curtis McElhinney is not a particularly good goalie, but the Toronto Maple Leafs check in as a decently sized favorite and his price across the industry is attackable (FanDuel - $7,400 and DraftKings - $7,800). Curtis will be supported by the National Hockey League's top-scoring offense (4.66 goals per game) and should see 30-plus shots against a rested Detroit team featuring multiple scoring lines. McElhinney will likely be a popular choice in tournaments given his price, so if one wants to be ultra-contrarian, taking a stab with Jimmy Howard in the opposite crease could pay off.
