Danny Lee Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Multiple Monday WD's for the first event of the 2021 PGA Tour season

The PGA Tour season will start a new this week as the 2021 season will get underway on Thursday at The Safeway Open. Matt Kuchar added his name to the list of players who committed to the event to pull out on Monday. Joining Danny Lee, Jimmy Walker, and Bronson Burgoon, Kuchar will take a pass on this week's event. With only one week separating the first event of the 2021 season and The U.S. Open, there could be more player movement as the week progresses. Roberto Castro, George McNiel, Bill Haas, and Ryan Blaum have been added as replacements and should be in the pricing pool within the next 24 hours.

Looking to Lee on this classic Donald Ross design

A lesser known PGA DFS rule is to play Danny Lee on Donald Ross designs and those courses similar. Of course, Detroit Golf Club is as traditional a design for Donald Ross as there may be anywhere and looking at Colonial as a comp course, I can see this trend continuing. Looking at his recent form doesn’t always add value as he is a very course-specific player, but when I took a look at his performances at Colonial and how he played the event, I was pleasantly surprised. Including this year, he has finished 10 - 22 - 6 - 14 - 48. Really consistent for a course with similar design and architecture. It never feels good rostering Danny Lee, but this is a great opportunity on a brand new course

Danny Lee looks to continue his solid play at Colonial

There was a time in his career where Danny Lee was considered one of the better young talents in golf. With a very impressive amateur career highlighted by a U.S. Amateur win, Lee seemed destined for great golf at the next level. Like many others before him, Lee has struggled to produce in comparison to the expectations placed upon him. That being said Lee has molded himself into a solid tour player and claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the 2015 Greenbrier. Lee started off on fire at last week's PGA but faded on the weekend to finish inside the top 40. Priced down in this week's field, Lee represents one of the better value plays when you factor in his course history at Colonial. In his last five starts at Colonial Lee has gained an average of six shots tee to green. With four top 25 or better finishes during this span, Lee stands out as a good source of value for the week.

Going Against the Grain

Lee is going to fly under the radar this week. Almost everyone that plays DFS looks at course history. Lee has played here four times and has never made the cut. Why on earth would I want to play him? For starters, three of those were one or two shots away from making the cut. The second (and most important) reason is that he has made seven straight cuts on tour, a feat that he hasn’t accomplished in nearly a year and a half. He has gained strokes tee to green in each of those seven cuts and has historically been a very good putter on bentgrass. It’s a classic case of form vs. course history and I’m siding with the former.

Nice Upside at a Great Price

Lee is a local resident who generally feels comfortable at Colonial. That makes him an intriguing value option based on course history alone, as he has finished 10th, 22nd, and 6th here over the last three seasons. What adds to his potential boom this week is the fact that he is fully healthy now for the first time in a while, and he is coming off an impressive top ten finish at THE PLAYERS in his last start. Lee is notoriously streaky, and this could be the start of a summer upswing with an event that he loves to play. He’s my favorite GPP value this week, but he does come with some risk. That’s just fine in tournament formats. The FanDuel and FantasyDraft price tags are also ridiculously cheap.

Danny Lee set to return from injury

Danny Lee disappointed a large number of the DFS community when a shoulder and wrist injury forced him to withdraw from the John Deere Classic. At an average ownership level of nearly 15%, Lee was one of the more popular plays for the John Deere Classic. With seven made cuts in a row, and four top ten or better finishes, Lee's game appeared to be trending in the right direction. The exact timing of Lee's injury is unknown, but the severity of the pain forced Lee to withdraw after an opening round of 74. Lee went to Twitter on Tuesday to let everyone know that his injury is improving and that he is looking forward to playing in this week's RBC Canadian Open. Injuries tend to lower ownership, and the popularity of Lee prior to the John Deere disappointment could prevent many gamers from playing him this week. The quality of golf displayed by Lee prior to the injury makes him a very intriguing option for this week.
