Dennis Santana scratched Thursday; Daniel Hudson will start in his place

Santana is an extremely late scratch from his scheduled start in Thursday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a presently unspecified reason. There's yet to be any confirmation whether Santana will pitch in relief at some point this afternoon or if the late change in the Los Angeles Dodgers starter is injury related, but regardless, Daniel Hudson will draw the start on the mound despite pitching out of the bullpen each of the last days. This means that his "start" should be expected to relatively brief and the Dodgers will likely be forced to resort to a full-blown bullpen game if Santana is indeed unable to absorb a handful of innings because of an injury.

Dennis Santana exceeded a 30% strikeout rate in 50 combined innings at AA and AAA this season

Dennis Santana made his major league debut in Coors, pitching 3.2 innings out of the pen after the Dodgers used a LH "opener" to match up with Colorado LHBs. He struck out four of 19 batters, but allowed five runs on six hits. The 22 year-old converted SS was graded the number eight prospect in the Dodger system this season less than a month ago, but with just a 45 Future Value grade. He’s exceeded a 30% strikeout rate in 50 combined innings at AA and AAA this season. This matchup will be differently difficult for him in that the Pirates have just a 17.7 K% at home and 19.5 K% vs RHP. However, that comes with HR/FB rates of 7.9% and 9.4%. There may be some upside in this arm for just $4.9K on DraftKings if paying up for Berrios or Mikolas as well. The Pirates have a modest 4.2 implied run line.

Mike Leake has a 60.7 GB% over his last four starts and throws a pitch (cutter) the Rays are worst in the majors against (-9.5 wCT)

Pitchers priced below $5K on DraftKings are not meant to make one feel comfortable, but all four that fit that description may be usable in support of a high priced arm. Mike Leake hasn't been great, but has pitched into the seventh inning in three of four starts and has a 60.7 GB% in that span. His xwOBA is finally below .400 and his aEV is nearly below 90 mph (90.4) with a hard hit rate below 40% in five of his last six starts. While we know that the Rays hit fastballs well (21.1 wFB), they are below average against sliders and cutters. In fact, he throws the cutter second most often this year (21.9%) and the Rays have a worse composite mark (-9.5 wCT) than any team in the majors against that pitch. Austin Pruitt is a near minimum priced pitcher who will garner nearly no ownership because he’s not officially listed as the starter tonight. He’s not going to overwhelm, but will miss the top half of the order in Seattle first time through. Elieser Hernandez just has an elite matchup at a near minimum cost in Arizona (68 wRC+, 25.7 K% vs RHP), even if his own numbers are not that encouraging (12.9 K%, 8.6 SwStr%, .347 xwOBA, 4.62 SIERA). Dennis Santana makes his debut in Coors (not good) and the Dodgers have declared this a potential bullpen game (not good), but he costs $4K and could give them enough reason to let him go for a while. Upside In Price

You know the rule - never roster a starting pitcher in Coors. And while that's a rule I hardly ever break, even in GPPs, I will admit that the more I read about Dennis Santana the more intrigued I am to take a flier on him as a cheap SP2 in tournaments. Santana is a converted shortstop who will be making his Major League debut for the Dodgers after two starts in AAA. He has a fastball that can reach the mid-90's + has decent movement and has shown strong strikeout stuff (30%+ strikeout rate in the Minors this year). Reading about Santana is giving me flashbacks of Freddy Peralta's debut for the Brewers in Colorado earlier this year where the young righty with a plus-fastball recorded 13 strikeouts over 5.2 IP. I don't want to lead anybody astray - my exposure to Rockies hitters will be greater than my exposure to Dennis Santana - but there is plenty of upside in Santana's price tag.
