Dwight Smith Jr. Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Extreme Splits for Pitcher Create Overlooked Bargains for Lineup

Austin Voth is competing to be the Nationals fifth starter, but he has been held back by his inability to get left-handed hitters out this season at any level. Across the minors and majors this year, Voth has given up a .574 slugging percentage and .958 OPS to lefties. With all of the high-powered offenses on the slate Baltimore should be extremely low-owned, and for GPPs I’ll be looking to fill out some of my lineups with Baltimore lefties – particularly Chance Sisco (.365 ISO against righties this season in 73 plate appearances), Dwight Smith, and Jonathan Villar.

Trevor Cahill has been getting rocked (nine HRs last 81 batters)

Trevor Cahill has seen his strikeout rate collapse with no more than two in three of his last four starts, in which he’s allowed nine HRs and walked 10 of 81 batters. He’s now sporting a board high 48.2 Z-O-Swing% for the season. His velocity is down a mile per hour from last season and trending downward even further with nearly each start. Also worst on the board are his 13.8% Barrels/BBE for the season and .437 xwOBA over the last month. It’s not often that you’ll see Baltimore bats recommended here, but it’s also not often you’ll see them on the top third of the board (4.74 implied runs) on a full slate. LHBs now have a .376 xwOBA with a 42.9 Hard% against Cahill over the last calendar year. In Dwight Smith Jr. (124 wRC+, .215 ISO) the Orioles actually have an above average bat against RHP over the last 12 months. He and Trey Mancini (113 wRC+, .216 ISO) are the only ones who can claim a wRC+ above 100 and ISO above .200 in this projected lineup over that span. Jonathan Villar (107 wRC+, .143 ISO) is probably worth a flyer as well, as Cahill is certainly a pitcher who can be run on as well. Because it’s the Orioles, there are two small potential drawbacks as well. First, Rio Riuz (116 wRC+) is the only batter on the roster with at least 10 PAs over the last week, who is above an 80 wRC+ over that span. Lastly, Cahill has not exceeded a 21.4 GB% in three of his seven starts, but has been at or above 50% in each of his other four starts. However, he’s still allowed six HRs over his last three starts with at least 50% ground balls.

An unexpected top projected offense

Some of you may have gone into shock when looking at the Vegas Odds page and seeing Baltimore above five implied runs. The O’s unloaded on Ivan Nova last night, but what kind of pitcher does it take to get them there? Let’s consider what Ervin Santana has done so far. He’s allowed 5 HRs in 8.2 IP with a 5.0 SwStr% and 13.6 BB% through two starts. He has a 32% ground ball rate and .503 xwOBA (20.6% Barrels/BBE). His body of work over the last calendar year is not very large (96 LHBs, 62 RHBs), but the numbers are still impressive. LHBs have a .382 wOBA (.401 xwOBA) and that’s his good side! RHBs have a .560 wOBA (.503 xwOBA). That’s a lot of hard contact in the air in a power friendly park tonight. Those kind of numbers give value to nearly any bat in an opposing lineup and Baltimore does have a few competent bats. Jonathan Villar (108 wRC+, .138 ISO) is one of four above average bats against RHP over the last calendar year. Renato Nunez (119 wRC+, .205 ISO), Trey Mancini (108 wRC+, .208 ISO), and Dwight Smith Jr. (132 wRC+, .246 ISO) have all shown above average power. One other thing to mention is Steve Wilkerson (44 wRC+, .091 ISO, 17.4 Hard%) has been terrible, but costs just $2.2K or less on either site out of the sixth slot. Lastly, for those still a bit gun shy about pulling the trigger on Baltimore bats, they are actually a favorite in tonight’s game AND the line has increased despite receiving a minority bet percentage so far. Reverse line movement is generally a strong sign.

Dwight Smith Jr. (leg) scratched Sunday; Cedric Mullins replaces

Smith Jr. has been scratched from the Baltimore Orioles original confirmed lineup and will not start in Sunday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox due to right leg soreness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup Cedric Mullins, who will now play center field and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which bumps Hanser Alberto and Jesus Sucre up to fifth and sixth, respectively, while Richard Martin slides up one batting position to eighth. However, the remainder of the Orioles lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against left-hander David Price on the road this afternoon.

The Fly Ball Rate Helps

There isn't a lot of value bats on DraftKings or FantasyDraft tonight. Dwight Smith Jr. is a guy that really stands out to me. Sean Reid-Foley had a .332 wOBA with a .194 ISO against lefties last season. He threw a lot of fastballs to left-handed hitters last season. His slider was very good last season, but only threw it 16% against lefties, compared to 33.46% against righties. In 61 PAs in 2018, Smith Jr. had a .245 ISO with a .391 wOBA against right-handed pitchers. His massive groundball rate of 50% should be okay against a fly ball pitcher like Reid-Foley.

Nick Tropeano and Marco Estrada are two extreme fly ball pitchers with reverse splits

Half of the eight teams on the afternoon slate (and on the six team FanDuel one) have an implied run line between 4.6 and 4.9, which comprises the top half of the board. The Angels (4.68) and Blue Jays (4.82) are two of them. Both starts, Nick Tropeano and Marco Estrada, are middle of the board among the seven pitchers who have made starts this year in strikeout rate, a bit below average and both have ERA estimators right around five, though the visiting pitcher has a DRA (4.58) much lower than the home one (7.20). Both xwOBAs lie between .355 and .380. Tropeano has the slightly higher aEV (89.6 mph), though Estrada has a much higher Barrels/BBE (12.5%) with a ground ball rate (25.6%) that's 10 full points lower than Tropeano (35.9%). Both pitchers have exhibited a reverse platoon split since last year with Estrada being good against LHBs (.306 wOBA, .293 xwOBA, 25.2 Hard%) and Tropeano allowing batters from either side an xwOBA in excess of .340 with a 40+ Hard%. There are few proficient left-handed batters in either of these lineups. Mike Trout (178 wRC+, .432 xwOBA, .314 ISO) and Josh Donaldson (132 wRC+, .379 xwOBA, .250 ISO) are obvious top players, both potentially bargains even at higher cost in these matchups and certainly affordable without a high priced pitcher on the board this afternoon. Beyond that, the Toronto lineup appears to offer more value without another batter reaching $4K on either site. Teoscar Hernandez (140 wRC+, .400 xwOBA, .318 ISO) is a top overall play and a great value play as well. Justin Upton (120 wRC+, .232 ISO) is the only other right-handed batter in either lineup topping a 100 wRC+ and .200 ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year. Shohei Ohtani (188 wRC+, .434 xwOBA, .343 ISO) and Yangervis Solarte (120 wRC+, .217 ISO) get there from the left side. Dwight Smith (151 wRC+, .326 xwOBA, .091 ISO in very limited work) is a cheap leadoff bat if that's something that might be needed.
