Eli Rogers Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

JuJu Smith-Schuster suspended for Week 14

The NFL gave the receiver a one-game ban for an illegal block he made on Vontaze Burfict last night. If he doesn't win his appeal, he'll miss Sunday night's game against the Ravens. His absence would elevate Martavis Bryant to the WR2 role and provide Eli Rogers more snaps. Bryant has now seen six targets in each of the past two games - one without JuJu - and caught four passes in both. He'll have a tough spot against one of the pass defenses in the league this weekend, but the Ravens will be without their top corner Jimmy Smith. Bryant will mostly line up across from Brandon Carr, PFF's 69th cover corner. Rookie CB Marlon Humphrey will join Carr in the starting line up in place of Smith. He’s seen as many targets as Smith (40) in 57% of the snaps and he’s held receivers to fewer receptions (20 to 23) and yards (282 to 292). Similar to Smith, he hasn’t been charged with a touchdown and he’s picked off two passes (Smith has three). We’ll find out what he’s made of next weekend when he’s set to face Antonio Brown most of the game.

JuJu Smith-Schuster ruled out for Week 12

Smith-Schuster's hamstring injury was reportedly considered minor at the beginning of the week but he hasn't been able to practice and he won't play on Sunday. His absence will provide more snaps and targets for Martavis Bryant and Eli Rogers. Despite his issues and lost playing time, Bryant is 16th in the league with 14 targets 20+ yards downfield. However, he's only pulled down one of those looks - and only two were catchable passes from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. A year ago, Roethlisberger was 12th in deep-passing accuracy (43%, per PFF) and posted the eighth-best passer rating on those throws (110.4); this season, he's 29th in accuracy (29%) and 26th in passer rating (55.2). He has a great spot to turn that around this weekend at home against a Packers pass defense that's given up the seventh-most 20-yard plays (35) while allowing the fifth-most yards per attempt (7.7) and second-highest completion percentage (68.1%). Although Antonio Brown would be the biggest beneficiary if Roethlisberger improves his big-play performance as he leads the league with 32 targets 20+ yards downfield, Bryant should also reap some of the rewards with Smith-Schuster out. Bryant is available on FanDuel for $5.2k this week.

Martavis Bryant expected to be inactive Week 8

Bryant took snaps with the scout team Wednesday and was told by the front office he'll be inactive this weekend. With JuJu Smith-Schuster in the concussion protocol, the Steelers could be very thin at receiver when they take on the Lions. If Smith-Schuster can get cleared to play, he would likely start and move to the outside, putting Eli Rogers in the slot. While Darius Slay could be busy shadowing Antonio Brown, JSS could get a mix of Nevin Lawson and D.J. Hayden, both of whom are ranked 95th or lower by PFF. Although he hadn't been targeted once in the deep-passing game entering Week 7, he picked up two looks 20+ yards downfield last Sunday and turned one of them into a 31-yard score. If Rogers takes over the slot role, he'll get plenty of run against Quandre Diggs, who's limited receivers to the sixth-fewest yards per cover snap when lined up inside.

Eli Rogers inactive for Week 5

Juju Smith-Schuster has become the Steelers WR3 and he arguably has the best CB matchup on the team today against Aaron Colvin. The Jaguars slot corner has earned a poor 55.2 cover grade from PFF this season, although he ranks eighth in yards per cover snap when in the slot (0.91). Jacksonville's strong pass defense has developed into a run-funnel. Although Le'Veon Bell averages 20.0 fewer yards and 0.32 fewer rushing touchdowns - for totals of 73.9 and 0.38 - when playing with Ben Roethlisberger at home, the Steelers may need to rely on their back more than they normally do when in Pittsburgh.

Ladarius Green ruled OUT for wild card game

Green (concussion) had been making progress through the protocol but ended up being held out of Friday's practice. Unfortunately, he took a step backwards and couldn't get cleared to play in the Steelers' first playoff game against the Dolphins. Jesse James will get the start in his place. James is definitely in play on the Sunday only slate considering the other options available at the position. He only topped 50 yards once this season and hasn't scored since Week 5 but without Green in the lineup the past two weeks, he received three red zone targets and eight overall. He projects as our top tight end on FanDuel and TE2 on DraftKings among those yet to kick off. Green's absence should also provide extra targets for Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell, and Eli Rogers.

Roethlisberger, Bell, and Brown all inactive Sunday, as expected

Landry Jones will start under center and his primary target will be Eli Rogers. DeAngelo Williams will split time with Fitzgerald Touissant in place of Le'Veon Bell. Williams is expected to get a good amount of work in order to get ready for the playoffs, but it's his first game since early November, so he will probably be somewhat limited. Pittsburgh has a good matchup against the Browns, but it's still hard to trust Jones to do well, which puts a damper on Rogers' fantasy value, and the backfield timeshare makes Williams and Touissant risky options as well.

Steelers Big 3 officially confirmed out this week

This only confirms what has been expected all week as Pittsburgh Head Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Bell, Brown, and Big Ben would all be out this week. Landry Jones, Fitzgerald Toussaint, and Eli Rogers (along with Cobi Hamilton) all provide sources of value this weekend as the Steelers have a plus match up against the Browns.

Ladarius Green and Sammie Coates INACTIVE Sunday

Green (concussion) and Coates (hamstring) were both listed as doubtful heading into the Steelers Christmas matchup with the Ravens. Jesse James will start at tight end in place of Green while Cobi Hamilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey will take over for Coates' snaps. Of course, they're all very risky options as the majority of targets will go to Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell, and to a lesser extent, Eli Rogers. Brown and Bell have combined for over 50% of Pittsburgh's total receptions. Baltimore's best corner, Jimmy Smith, is inactive, which places Brown in an excellent spot. Both he and Bell will surely come with high ownership on the Christmas slate.

Ladarius Green looking unlikely to be cleared for Week 16

He was sidelined again Thursday, and given his injury history, it would be surprising to see him on the field against the Ravens this weekend. With Antonio Brown likely to see double (or perhaps triple in some situations) coverage against Baltimore - something they've done in prior meetings - Eli Rogers should be able to step up. Rogers posted a 6-103 line on 10 targets against the Ravens earlier this year, and while he may not hit the double-digit target threshold again, he should still be in the 6-8 range with upside for more if the Steelers aren't able to run the ball effectively. Baltimore has shown some leaks against the run recently (Ryan Mathews posted a 100+ yard game on them this past week), so we'd still bet on Le'Veon Bell having a very productive outing. If you're in need of a TE punt, Jesse James will be a potential low-end option, but he's very TD dependent given his limited yardage upside.

Ladarius Green still in concussion protocol

Given his history, it's looking unlikely that we'll see Green on the field this Sunday against the Ravens. He's seen at least six targets in the past three games, and while a good chunk of those looks will likely be funneled to Jesse James, Eli Rogers and Le'Veon Bell could also see a slight uptick as a result. If Jimmy Smith is inactive, it'll be good news for Antonio Brown. Since Smith became a starter, Brown has 64.5 YPG in the six games Smith has played and 130 YPG in the two he hasn't, a trend that other top wideouts have also followed (this season especially). We'll provide updates on Green's status as the week progresses, but expect the Steelers to be without their best pass-catching TE.
