Felix Pena Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Start of LAA-DET will be delayed due to rain Thursday

The start of the matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon will be delayed due to rain. There’s yet to be any confirmation of an official start time, and the Tigers have not yet committed to a specific timeline for providing further updates. The definitive late start is potentially better news for the prospects of pitchers like Felix Pena not being pulled from the game early because of a mid-game stoppage, and as Kevin Roth detailed in the latest update to his MLB weather forecast, he believes this contest will begin and finish following the initial rain delay.

Another opportunity for west coast fireworks

Games in explosive environments like Colorado and Texas will get most of the attention tonight, but don’t forget there were 21 runs scored in Anaheim last night and a chance for more fireworks tonight. On one side, Marco Gonzales remains is missing fewer bats (14.6 K%, 6.2 SwStr%) and allowing louder contact (89 mph aEV). In fact, his 92.4 Z-Contact% is worst on the board and he’s facing a team that just does not strike out (Angels 15.8 K% last seven days). Add this to the worst defense in the league through the first few weeks (Mariners -26 DFS) and the Angels may put a few more on the board tonight. While Mike Trout (174 wRC+, .250 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) is a given, perhaps he’ll go under-owned in favor of Coors bats. David Fletcher (66 wRC+, .093 ISO) hasn’t shown much, but homered last night and provides a cheap leadoff bat.

On the other side, Felix Pena has the worst aEV on the board (95.1 mph) and that’s through three starts, not just one or two. The Seattle lineup has not yet been released, but the bat you want here is Dan Vogelbach. He has been destroying RHP (187 wRC+, .305 ISO, 51.6 Hard% over the last calendar year) and we might see one go a long way if he connects tonight. LHBs have a .332 wOBA and 42.7 Hard% against Pena over the last year. The problem is, besides Vogelbach and Jay Bruce (94 wRC+, .182 ISO), the Mariners don’t really offer a lot in terms of LH power.

Highest Flyball Rate on the Slate

Felix Pena has the highest flyball rate on the slate tonight (min 10 IP) with a 50% rate in 2019. Given the recent talk of balls being juiced, it seems advantageous to target flyball pitchers, especially flyball pitchers that are bad. In addition to his FB rate, Pena has a 5.67 xFIP and 41.2% hard contact rate compared to a 0% soft contact rate on the year. Pena gets the start vs. Seattle tonight, whose offense has hit RHP well: Dan Vogelbach (.436 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Edwin Encarnacion (.353), Ryon Healy (.327) and Jay Bruce (.321) are all potential options tonight. Mitch Haniger (.279) has not seen much success yet this year but has a career .356 wOBA vs. RHP. Mallex Smith (.264 xwOBA vs. RHP this year) is always a threat for a steal and should see his usual leadoff spot. Seattle has a 4.41 implied total vs. Pena and the Angels.

Rangers Stack In Play Vs. Pena

One not-so-obvious stack tonight could be the Rangers vs. Felix Pena. Pena is a 4.58 ERA / 4.04 SIERA pitcher in 139.2 innings at the MLB level. He is particularly worse vs. LHB with a career .329 xwOBA, 7.4 K-BB% and 1.27 HR/9 allowed in his career. The Rangers have some solid bats vs. RHP, namely Shin-Soo Choo (.393 xwOBA vs. RHP in 2018), Joey Gallo (.371), Nomar Mazara (.359), Asdrubal Cabrera (.330) and Rougned Odor (.328). Choo seems very underpriced across the industry given he will likely be leading off and has a history of great production vs. RHP. Mazara is very affordable as well, he should bat middle of the order tonight and is a guy who has hit RHP consistently well in his young career. Asdrubal Cabrera has started off the year hot with 3 bombs and a 189 wRC+ and is an intriguing option at a shallow position tonight.

Underpriced Pitcher Faces Strikeout-Happy Lineup

Felix Pena put up decent numbers for the Angels last season, with a 4.08 SIERA and 8.26 K/9, but he draws a high-upside matchup against the Rangers in Anaheim tonight. The Rangers ranked 5th in team K% against right-handed pitching last season at 24.4%, and so far this season they rank 10th at 26%. Pena and the Angels are slight favorites at home tonight and Pena is underpriced for the matchup across sites.

Upside Arm Tonight

Pitching tonight is tough, and finding someone with some upside towards the bottom is even tougher. Felix Pena is a guy who I am looking at in tournaments, even though he gets a tough Oakland lineup to go against. Pena’s strikeout rate to right handed batters was 26% last year, and he gets an Oakland team with most of their power bats coming from the right side. Of course there is risk involved, but I do see upside at a cheap price.

Preferred SP2

Cash game lineup construction on Saturday night should follow this outline: High priced SP1 (my preference is Eduardo Rodriguez), low-priced SP2, and 3+ Cubs hitters. Pena is my preferred low-priced play as he has the best combination of matchup, park, and upside. Pena flashed his strikeout potential at times last season, including a 12 strikeout performance against the Diamondbacks and is coming off a strong Spring Training finale in which he struck out 9-batters over 3.1 innings.

Let's Try This Again

We don't have a lot of cheaper options that I like on this slate, and Felix Pena at home against Texas makes sense. Texas is a much better team at home, and with nothing to play for, we may see some younger guys in the lineup. Pena has posted a 4.10 xFIP with a 21.8% strikeout rate and a 7.5% walk rate on the season. He's been much better against righties, and that's the only thing that worries me about this lineup. One of the good things has been his ability to limit the power against left-handed hitters. It's not a safe spot, but it's one of the better spots to attack on this slate.

An Under-Rated SP #2 Option

Felix Pena has quietly been pitching very well for the Angels of late, posting a 1.35 ERA with a 12/1 K/BB ratio over his first three starts in the month of September. He was very efficient in his last outing, needing just 77 pitches to get through six scoreless frames in an easy win. The Angels are looking to win three in a row in this series, and while a matchup against the A's is generally not one we want to use to target pitchers, the combination of a reasonable price and solid form is enough to put Pena on the GPP radar on this slate.

If You Need To

I recommend trying to pay up at pitcher tonight, but if you need to go cheaper to feel OK about your bats, I would side with Felix Pena at home against the Rangers. Pena has been up and down with the strikeouts this season, but there's upside in there, especially against righties where he has a 27.8% strikeout rate. He has gotten more stretched out as the season wears on, reaching at leats 90 pitches in five straight starts, allowing 10 starts in 32 innings over that stretch. While the strikeouts have gone up and down, the control has remained solid with a 7.8% walk rate on the season, down to 6.3% over the past month. There is some downside here with the Texas lefty power, but it's either Pena or Jon Gray in this price range, and I'll take the guy pitching in Anaheim over the guy pitching in Coors everytime.
